Father Radoslav Filipovich, Attached (317) Joseph Hazar, Subdeacon, Pastoral Assistant (607) DECEMBER 25, 2013 THE NATIVITY ACCORDING TO THE FLESH OF OUR LORD, GOD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST THE ADORATION OF THE NEW-BORN CHRIST BY THE MAGI MELCHIOR, GASPAR & BALTHASAR AND BY THE SHEPHERDS IN BETHLEHEM WHO WERE WATCHING THEIR FLOCKS BY NIGHT AND CAME TO SEE THE LORD What shall we offer Thee, O Christ, who for our sakes hast appeared on earth as man? Every creature made by Thee offers Thee thanks. The angels offer Thee a hymn; the heavens a star; the Magi, gifts; the shepherds, their wonder; the earth, its cave; the wilderness, the manger: and we offer Thee a Virgin Mother. O pre eternal God, have mercy upon us.
PART I: LITURGY VARI ATIONS 1 ST ANTIPHON (PSALM 9.1; LXX) I will give thanks unto the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. Refrain: Through the intercession of the Theotokos, Savior, save us. Great are the works of the Lord, adapted to all His purposes. Refrain Full of honor and majesty is His work, and His righteousness endures forever. Refrain Holy and terrible is His Name. Refrain Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Refrain Schedule of Regular Weekly Services Saturdays: Sundays: Vespers, 5 PM Matins, 9 AM Divine Liturgy, 10 AM Confession: After Saturday Vespers See Calendar for Feast Days and Other Weekday Services Scheduled Order for Holy Communion Members of the Orthodox Church age seven and above must prepare for Holy Communion with a recent confession, prayer, fasting from all food and drink from midnight (unless medical condition preclude it), being in church before the Epistle and Gospel readings, and being at peace with everyone. As there are NO CHURCH SCHOOL classes today, children should sit with their parents and come to Communion with them. An usher will dismiss your row from the center aisle. Then return to your place by a side aisle for the prayers of thanksgiving and the final blessing and dismissal. Please let choir members pass when they come for Communion. During Sunday Matins Or by Appointment A Warm Welcome to Our Guests We are glad you are worshipping with us. Please note that Holy Communion is limited to members of the Orthodox Church in good standing, who have prepared with prayer, fasting and confession. For all others though we cannot share Communion with you, since it is the expression of full unity of Faith you are welcome to come forward after the dismissal, receive a blessing and partake of the blessed bread (in the large bowls). Please also sign our guest book, and introduce yourself to Fr. Nabil during the coffee hour. You may inquire with him how you can become a member.
2 ND ANTIPHON (PSALM ) Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord; he will greatly delight in His commandments. Refrain: O Son of God, Who wast born of the Virgin, save us who sing unto Thee: Alleluia. His seed shall be mighty in the earth; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Refrain Glory and riches shall be in His house, and his righteousness endures forever. Refrain There hath risen up in darkness a light for the upright; He is merciful and compassionate and righteous. Refrain Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. O only-begotten Son and immortal Word of God. 3 RD ANTIPHON: TROPARION OF THE NATIVITY AS REFRAIN (PSALM ; TONE 4) The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make Thine enemies the footstool of Thy feet. Refrain: Thy Nativity, O Christ our God, hath given rise to the light of knowledge in the world; for they who did worship the stars did learn from them to worship Thee, O Sun of Justice, and to know that thou didst come from the east of the Highest: Glory to Thee, O Lord. The Lord shall send to you a scepter of power from Sion. Refrain With Thee is dominion in the day of Thy power, in the splendor of Thy saints. Refrain ENTRANCE HYMN (PSALM ; TONE 2) Clergy: Out of the womb, before the Morning Star, have I begotten Thee. The Lord hath sworn and will not repent: Thou art a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedech. Save us, O Son of God, Who wast born of a Virgin People: save us who sing to Thee: Alleluia.
APOLYTIKIA AFTER THE ENTRANCE Troparion of the Nativity (Tone 4) Thy Nativity, O Christ our God, hath given rise to the light of knowledge in the world; for they who did worship the stars did learn from them to worship Thee, O Sun of Justice, and to know that thou didst come from the east of the Highest: Glory to Thee, O Lord. Today the Virgin giveth birth to the Transcendent in essence; the earth offereth the cave to the unapproachable One; the angels with the shepherds glorify Him; and the Kontakion of the Nativity (Tone 3) Magi with the star travel on their way; for a new child hath been born for our sakes, God before the ages. INSTEAD OF THE TRISAGION (GALATIANS 3.27) As many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ! Alleluia. THE SCRIPTURE LESSONS Prokeimenon (Psalm 65.3, 1 LXX; Tone 4) Let all the earth worship Thee and chant to Thee. Verse: Shout with jubilation unto the Lord, all the earth! BRETHREN, when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, in order to redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians (4.4-7) because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, Abba! Father! Therefore, you are no longer a bondservant, but a son, and if a son then an heir of God through Christ. Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew (2.1-12) When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the King, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, Where is He Who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship Him. When Herod the King heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by
the prophet: And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel. Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the Child, and when you have found Him bring me word, that I too may come and worship Him. When they had heard the King, they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the Child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the Child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. PART II: ANNOUNCEMEN TS PLEASE JOIN US FOR FELLOWSHIP AFTER LITURGY Refreshments to break the fast are hosted by Fr. Nabil and Khouriyah Elaine Hanna as their Christmas gift to you and in love and appreciation for all our parish family. Please feel free to mingle in the narthex and office areas, as well as the hallway. Please allow older parishioners and anyone else needing to sit to use the conference room table. FEASTING NO FASTING The period of Christmas rejoicing extends to the day before Epiphany (that is through January 4, with January 5 always being a strict fast day). Until then fasting and kneeling in prayer are not called for by the Church. Throughout this time, it is the custom for Orthodox Christians to greet each other with the words: "Christ is Born!" and the response: "Glorify Him!" STARTING THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT Every good work begins with prayer. On January 1, our holy Church commemorates the Circumcision of Christ on the Eighth Day, in fulfillment of the Mosaic Law. We also commemorate St. Basil the Great with the blessing and cutting of the Vasilopeta. Because it is Fr. Bill s nameday, he has invited us to join in Liturgy there on New Year s Eve: Liturgy 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity. ADDITIONS TO THE COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS CARD The following names were received too late to be included in the Community Christmas card. The Capshaw family

YOUTH NEWS Middle School Ministry is now changing to a new ministry called Rocky Road. Rocky Road is for teens, grades 6-12, and will begin meeting every Wednesday (beginning January 8, 2014) at 6:30 pm at the house on the new Church s property. We will begin with Vespers (just like we do it at the Antiochian Village), and then we will have a discussion on something that relates to the life of an Orthodox Christian Teenager and the Rocky Road that they travel every day in this world we live in. We will complete every session with a fun activity and games in the Teen room in the House basement. Come be a part of this exciting new ministry! Reserve your spot now at Antiochian Village for 2014 Summer Camp. Check out the online information, and sign up now! Usually the youth from our parish attend 1 st Session, which will be June this year. Camp is the most effective part of our youth ministry program by far, and we encourage all those ages 9-17 to attend. Our parish also pays half the cost and provides transportation. When you sign up your youth, you only need to pay the deposit at this time. Please then let Fr. Nabil know at pastor@stgindy.org, so he can distribute scholarship funds. Summer Camp staff and volunteer applications are also available online now. St George Church of Canton, OH is hosting their 16th Annual Basketball Tournament and Retreat January 17-19, This is a great opportunity for our Teens (ages 13-19) to get to know other young Orthodox people from throughout the Diocese. Anyone interested in playing in the tournament or going to support our teams and enjoying the retreat should contact Subdeacon Joseph ASAP and fill out the registration forms. Church School will begin on January 12 with a special kick-off event on Saturday, January 11. Guest singer Gigi Shadid will be with us LIVE that weekend for a concert and teaching. Interested in getting your teens involved? Speak to Subdeacon Joseph, the new Pastoral Assistant and Youth Director for information about Teen SOYO and find out how to get your teens (12-19) involved, and how you can help.
