She studied and knew almost all the sciences of her time, which was very rare even for those days. "She was highly trained in all the knowledge of the Greeks and Romans, such as Homer and Virgil the great Roman Poet; Asclepius, Hippocrates and Galen the Physicians; Aristotle, Plato, Philistionos and Eusebius the Philosophers; and all the Rhetoricians found throughout the world, and not only, but even every word of every language did she learn, that brought amazement not only to those who saw her, but also to those who heard of her fame and wisdom and education." But that which, par excellence, reveals the fullness of her education is not only the things mentioned above, but rather the wealth of her heart. She was a bearer of "wisdom from above", which does not inflate the mind, but it widens the heart to contain the whole world. Good and humble that she was she had simplicity in her manners, but firmness in her decisions, and this is shown clearly in her martyrdom. With true wisdom she humiliated the pagan orators and allowed it to be transparent that their faith was false and their words pure babble. "And the impious words of the orators you stopped, Great-Champion." In another hymn it says: "She offered Christ thanks night and day, she destroyed their idols and all their mindless worship, and she trampled on the knowledge of orators. By Fr. Refrain: Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, Savior, save us. God is known in her palaces for a refuge. As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God. Refrain Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. CHILDREN going to church school and their teachers should come down the center aisle first. (Small children may need to be assisted by their parents.) ALL OTHERS should wait until an usher dismisses your row from the center aisle. Then return to your place by a side aisle for the prayers of thanksgiving and the final blessing and dismissal. O only-begotten Son and Word of God. 3 RD ANTIPHON: APOLYTIKION OF THE FEAST AS REFRAIN (TONE 4) Even the rich among the people shall entreat thy favor. The King s daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold.. Refrain: Today the Virgin is the foreshadowing of the pleasure of God, and the beginning of the preaching of the salvation of mankind. Thou hast appeared in the Temple of God openly and hast gone before, preaching Christ to all. Let us shout with one thrilling voice, saying, Rejoice, O thou who art the fulfillment of the Creator s dispensation. Virgins shall be brought to the King after her: her companions shall be brought unto Thee. Refrain APOLYTIKIA AFTER THE ENTRANCE While the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers were guarding Thy most pure body, Thou didst arise on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world. For which cause the heavenly powers cried aloud unto Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 1) Thee, O giver of life. Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Christ, glory to Thy kingdom, glory to Thy providence, O Thou Who alone art the lover of mankind. 4 Let us praise the all-lauded and noble bride of Christ, * the godly Katherine, the guardian of Sinai and its defense, * who is also our support and succor and our help; * for with the Holy Spirit s sword * she Liberator of captives, Defender of the poor, the Physician of the sick and the Champion of kings, O Trophy-bearer, Great-martyr Troparion St. Katherine (Tone 5) Troparion for St. George (Tone 4, Byzantine) hath silenced brilliantly the clever among the godless; * and being crowned as a Martyr, she now doth ask great mercy for us all. George, intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved. Kontakion of the Entrance of the Theotokos (Tone 4) The sacred Treasury of God s holy glory, the greatly precious Bridal Chamber and Virgin, the Savior s most pure Temple, free of stain and undefiled, into the House of the Lord on this day is brought forward and bringeth SCRIPTURE LESSONS with herself the grace of the Most Divine Spirit; her do God s Angels hymn with songs of praise, for she is truly the heavenly Tabernacle. God is wonderful among his saints. Verse: Bless God in the congregations. Prokeimenon (Tone 4; Psalm 67.35, 26 LXX) Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians ( ; St. Katherine) BRETHREN, before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate; but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

5 From the Gospel according to St. Luke (18:18-27; 13 th Sunday of Luke) AT THAT TIME: a ruler asked Him, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said to him, Why do you call Me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother. And he said, All these I have observed from my youth. And when Jesus heard it, He said to him, One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me. But when he heard this he became sad, for he was very rich. Jesus looking at him said, How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle then for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Those who heard it said, Then who can be saved? But He said, What is impossible with men is possible with God. Since thou art a living temple of God, O Theotokos, no impure hand shall touch thee. But the lips of believers, let them ceaselessly laud thee, crying unto thee joyfully with the voice of the angels, Verily, O undefiled Virgin, thou art more exalted than all creatures.

NO CHURCH SCHOOL TODAY Next Sunday, all church school classes will continue preparing for the Christmas Pageant, which they will offer on December 9. PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS: PRE-CHRISTMAS FAST November 15 marked the first day of the NATIVITY FAST, which runs for forty days, until Christmas. (We do make a general dispensation, however, for Thanksgiving Day.) During this time, we abstain from meat and dairy products. Then the last few days of the fast Dec become stricter, when fish, wine and oil are also excluded. Everyone should also plan to make their confession sometime during the fast. 7 This is the time of year when we reflect upon our many blessings and give thanks to our almighty God. It is also the time to re-evaluate our stewardship commitment for the coming year. This commitment is in the form of our annual stewardship pledge. This is the pledge we make to continue the operational support of our church for the coming year and is separate from the building fund/mortgage pledge. Our pledge drive will culminate on Sunday, December 9, our annual Pledge Sunday. That will be the day we step forward at the end of Liturgy and renew our commitments to sharing in the Lord s work by making our pledges for Afterwards, our stewardship committee will serve brunch in thanksgiving for you and all our stewards. ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN We hope everyone is striving to reach a goal of at least 10% of their total income as a pledge. If you can t reach 10%, please consider increasing your pledge from last year and continue to work toward 10% in the future. Father Nabil, the parish council and stewardship committee are asking for 100% participation from all members of St. George Parish. Please help us reach our goal!
