10748 E. 116 th Street Fishers, Indiana (317) V. Rev. Father Nabil L. Hanna, Pastor (317) Rev. James A. Childs, Deacon (317) Rev. Joseph S. Olas, Deacon (317) A Parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest His Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH, Archbishop of New York and Metropolitan of all North America His Grace Bishop ANTHONY, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Toledo TONE 1 JANUARY 28, 2018 EOTHINON 1 SUNDAY OF THE PHARISEE AND THE PUBLICAN GOD-BEARING FATHERS EPHRAIM AND ISAAC THE SYRIANS VENERABLE PALLADIOS OF ANTIOCH MARTYR CHARITA VENERABLE THEODOSIOS OF TOTMA IN VOLOGD Today, we commemorate two great Syrian Fathers, Ss. Ephraim and Isaac. Both wrote theology and spiritual works in a poetic style, including hymns and prayers. None is more famous than the Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian, which starts, O Lord and Master of my life. Saint Ephraim was born in Nisibis of Mesopotamia about the year 306. Ephraim then made his dwelling in Edessa. Saint Ephraim was the first to make the poetic expression of hymnody and song a vehicle of Orthodox theological teachings, constituting it an integral part of the Church's worship; he may rightly be called the first and greatest hymnographer of the Church, who set the pattern for these who followed him, especially Saint Romanos the Melodist. Because of this he is called the "Harp of the Holy Spirit." Saint Ephraim reposed in peace around 379. Saint Isaac, was born in the early seventh century in Eastern Arabia, the present-day Qatar on the Persian Gulf. He became a monk at a young age and went to dwell with monks in Persia. He was consecrated Bishop of Nineveh (and is therefore sometimes called "Saint Isaac of Nineveh. He wrote his renowned and God-inspired Ascetical Homilies toward the end of his long life of monastic struggle, about the end of the seventh century. The fame of his Homilies grew quickly were translated from Syriac into Greek by two monks of the Monastery of Mar Sabbas in Palestine, from which they spread throughout the monasteries of the Roman Empire and became a guide to the hesychasts of all generations thereafter.
L I T U RGY VA R I AT I O N S THIRD ANTIPHON: TROPARION OF THE RESURRECTION (TONE 1) While the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers were guarding Thy most pure body, Thou didst arise on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world, for which cause the heavenly powers cried aloud unto Thee, O Giver of life. Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Christ, glory to Thy Kingdom, glory to Thy providence, O Thou Who alone art the Lover of mankind. Schedule of Regular Weekly Services Sundays: Matins, 8:50 AM Divine Liturgy, 10 AM Wednesdays: Vespers, 6:30 PM Saturdays: Great Vespers, 5 PM Confession: See Calendar for Feast Days and Other Weekday Services Scheduled Order for Holy Communion Members of the Orthodox Church age seven and above must prepare for Holy Communion with a recent confession, prayer, fasting from all food and drink from midnight (unless medical condition preclude it), being in church before the Epistle and Gospel readings, and being at peace with everyone. CHILDREN going to church school and their teachers should come down the center aisle first. (Small children may need to be assisted by their parents.) ALL OTHERS should wait until an usher dismisses your row from the center aisle. Then return to your place by a side aisle for the prayers of thanksgiving and the final blessing and dismissal. Please let choir members pass when they come down for Communion. After Saturday Vespers During Sunday Matins Or by Appointment A Warm Welcome to Our Guests We are glad you are worshipping with us. Please note that participation in Holy Communion is limited to members of the Orthodox Church in good standing, who have prepared with prayer, fasting and confession. For all others: though we cannot share Communion with you since it is an expression of membership and full unity in faith you are welcome to come forward after the dismissal, receive a blessing and partake of the blessed bread (from the large bowls). Please also sign our guest book, and introduce yourself to Fr. Nabil during the coffee hour. You may inquire with him how you can become a member.
APOLYTIKIA AFTER THE ENTRANCE While the stone was sealed by the Jews. Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 1) As Deliverer of captives and Defender of the poor, Healer of the infirm, Champion of kings, victorious Great-Martyr George, O Christ God, Thou hast sanctified the virgin s womb by Thy birth, and as was meet, hast blessed the hands of Simeon. Thou hast also come to us to save us. Do Troparion of St. George (Tone 4; Russian) intercede with Christ, our God, for our souls salvation. Kontakion of the Presentation of Christ (Tone 1) Thou when wars prevail, give peace to Thy people, and make mighty those whom Thou hast loved, for Thou alone art the Lover of mankind THE SCRIPTURE LESSONS Prokeimenon (Tone 8; Psalm 75.11, 1 LXX) Make your vows to the Lord our God, and perform them. Verse: God is known in Judah; His Name is great in Israel. St. Paul s 2 nd Epistle to Timothy ( ; Pharisee and Publican) TIMOTHY, MY SON, you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all, the Lord rescued me. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Holy Gospel according to St. Luke ( ; Pharisee and Publican) THE LORD SPOKE THIS PARABLE: Two men went up into the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank Thee that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers,
or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner! I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted. For the benefit of the recent immigrants from the Middle East among us, we are making available some bi-lingual copies of today s Matins and Divine Liturgy. They are available at the candle stand. TODAY S STUDY TOPIC All church school classes from first grade on up today will learn about Jesus in Galilee, found in Mark 1, Matthew 4, Luke 5 and John 2 in regular Bibles and on pp in The Golden Children s Bible. Dn. James will share the same lesson with adults, at the end of Liturgy. On January 28 in the Holy Orthodox Church, we commemorate of our Venerable and Godbearing Fathers Ephraim and Isaac the Syrians; Venerable Palladios of Antioch; Martyr Charita; and Venerable Theodosios of Totma in Vologda. On this day, we make remembrance of the Parable of the Pharisee and the Publican, which occurs in the Holy Gospel according to Luke the Evangelist. Verses If you resemble the Pharisee, run far away from the Temple; For inside is Christ before Whom only the humble are acceptable. Verses for the Triodion O Creator of everything heavenly and earthly, receive Thou from the Angels a Trinitarian song, And from us men a noble and reverent Triodion. THE SYNAXARION In our Savior s parable, Jesus uses a Pharisee, a leader of the synagogue, who was regarded in public opinion as virtuous; and a publican, a tax collector, who was regarded as oppressive, greedy and a sinner. In their prayers to God, we discover the real hearts of these two men. We thus learn of the harm that comes from pride and the good that comes from humility. The divine Church Fathers sought to alert and prepare the Christ-loving clergy and laity for the upcoming period of the Great Fast. Therefore, on this Sunday we are reminded that humility is the greatest weapon against pride, as we imitate the humility of the publican to ascend to the divine heights. Through the intercessions of the wonderworking Saints, O Christ our God, have mercy upon us and save us. Amen.
FAST-FREE WEEK (BUT LENT IS AROUND THE CORNER!) Aside from preparation for Communion, there is no fasting or abstinence from meats and dairy products during this week, in commemoration of the Pharisee and Publican. The last day we eat meat will be February 11. Then we begin the Great Fast proper by eliminating cheese (i.e., dairy products) and fish after Forgiveness Vespers on February 18. LITURGICAL CELEBRATIONS MIDWEEK Tuesday, January 30, Divine Liturgy 10 am: Feast of the Three Great Hierarchs Thursday, February 1, Divine Liturgy 6:30 pm: Eve of the Great Feast of the Meeting of the Lord (or the Presentation of Christ in the Temple). SATURDAY OF SOULS: FEBRUARY 10 Matins 9 am Divine Liturgy 10 am Memorial for All the Departed at the end of Liturgy This is a day for remembering as many of our forebears as we can, praying that God will remember them in His Kingdom always. Bring with you a list of names of all the departed you wish to remember. It is also customary to bring with you a small bowl of Koliva (as you see in the photo), but if you don t have time to make it, don t worry, as Kh. Elaine will be making a large bowl on behalf of the whole parish; just come, and bring a list of the full first names of your beloved departed. Note that Fr. Nabil is hosting the Ancient Faith Ministries Board meeting here Feb. 8-10, and the Board members and some of the staff will be with us for Liturgy. This is a great time to meet them and welcome them CHURCH CALENDARS New church calendars are available in the Narthex. Note there s a typographical error in your 2018 calendars: the titles for the first three Sundays in January were misapplied for Sunday After Theophany, Zacchaeus and Canaanite Woman, but the readings are placed correctly.
WORDS OF WISDOM Losers focus on what they are going through, and winners focus on what they are going to. Friends, sometimes in life we have a victim mentality, thinking poor old me. No, friends, I want you to change that attitude. God created you as a winner and yes, things may not be going your way in life, but don't have a pity party, have a praise party. Remember brighter days are ahead. If you complain, you will remain, but if you praise, you will be raised. Please Join Us for Fellowship after the Liturgy Passing through the stained glass gallery, please take the elevator or front lobby stairs or to the lower level. The ushers will hand you the announcements bulletin as you exit via the north (side) doors of the nave, following the dismissal and verbal announcements. In accordance with a directive from Metropolitan Joseph, we are now separating announcements and liturgical material into separate bulletins. Fr. Nicholas Louh, St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church, Jacksonville, FL A human being who does not endure courageously the unpleasant burdens of temptations, will never produce fruit worthy of the divine wine-press and eternal harvest, not even if one possesses all other virtues. For one is only perfected through zealously enduring both all the voluntary and involuntary afflictions. St. Gregory Palamas GOD BLESS YOUR HOME AND ALL WHO DWELL IN IT! Our Epiphany celebration includes taking the blessed water to the homes of all our parishioners. Thus Fr. Nabil would like to come and visit with you, pray with you and ask God to bless your home. It would help in setting up his schedule if you would kindly return the coupon below. Father would like to do his best to see as many as possible before Lent starts (Feb. 18).
