4 5:15 P.M. ORGAN RECITAL Marc Fitze Bern, Switzerland MUSIC NOTES Christopher Tye (c ) was one of the most prolific of England s composers in the sixteenth century. He was a lay clerk at King s College, Cambridge, before becoming Magister Choristarum at Ely Cathedral in He later took holy orders and ended his days in the Cambridgeshire parish of Doddington-cum-Marche, where he was described as Doctor Musicae non tamen habilis ad predicandum ( a Doctor of Music, not however very skilled in preaching ). Tye s Missa Euge bone is thought to have been part of the submission for his Cambridge doctorate (later incorporated at Oxford). The antiphon on which the work is reputedly based has been lost, yet there are several motifs which occur regularly throughout the work, most probably taken from this original melody. The English influence is evident in the high writing for trebles, and the rich and varied textures, yet the syllabic word-setting and extended imitation are both continental in style. The flowers today are offered to the glory of God and in memory of the following: Margaret Crane Hurlbut, Nydia Mason, James Massey, Herbert Asher Metzger, Ida Spear O Neill and Frances Wasson Scoville. Monday through Friday Services: 8 a.m., 12:10 and 5:30 p.m. (The Tuesday 12:10 p.m. Eucharist includes a healing service.) Saturday Eucharist: 12:10 p.m. Choral Evensong on Tuesday, September 26, at 5:30 p.m. Choral Evensong on Wednesday, September 27, at 5:30 p.m. Festal Evensong for the Eve of Saint Michael & All Angels on Thursday, September 28, at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 12 p.m. Prayers at the Shrine of our Lady of Fifth Avenue Intercessions may be sent via the website by using the Prayer Request Tab or by leaving a written request in the box near the Shrine itself. The clergy are available to hear confessions by appointment. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1 FEAST OF DEDICATION 8 A.M. SAID EUCHARIST 9 A.M. SUNG EUCHARIST Sermon by The Rector 11 A.M. SOLEMN EUCHARIST Sermon by The Rector 4 P.M. SOLEMN EVENSONG Sermon by The Rector PARISH NOTICES If you are a visitor this morning, we welcome you to Saint Thomas Church and hope that you are with us again soon. We encourage you to complete a Welcome Card which you can find in the narthex at the front of the church. There is a guided tour of the church following the voluntary at the end of this service. To join the tour, please meet the tour guide by the gallery stairs in the narthex.
5 Sunday School: Children who are in pre-school through 6th grade are invited to attend Sunday School classes at Saint Thomas Church. Class meets Sundays at 11 a.m., and the children are brought down to church during the service prior to Holy Communion. For more information about registering your child or for questions about the program, please Mother Alison Turner at Nursery: We welcome our youngest members and guests to Saint Thomas Church. Nursery care is available for infants and young children of parents attending the 9 and 11 a.m. liturgies. If your child would like to attend the nursery, please ask one of our ushers or staff who will kindly direct you. Once at the nursery, parents will be asked to sign their children in and will receive a silent pager for use during the service. You are invited to Coffee Hour, which takes place in Andrew Hall following this service. To get there, take the Great Staircase to your left at the front of the nave. Please introduce yourself to members of the Welcome Committee, who will be distributing name tags, or to members of the clergy. Also, if you would like to hear from us, please sign the Parish Guest Book. The Prayer Shawl Ministry resumes meeting this Tuesday. The intentional purpose of the Saint Thomas Prayer Shawl group is to gather in Christian fellowship, to knit together, and that the work done by the group should benefit the sick and shut-in and other charitable causes. Though not designed as a knitting class, experienced members have always been helpful to beginners in learning to knit. Knitting needles and yarn are provided. If the purpose of the group interests you and you would like to become involved, the first meeting of the year will be this Tuesday, September 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the living room of the parish house. For more information, contact Linda at LMorfi@SaintThomasChurch.org. The 2018 Annual Appeal starts next Sunday. Please join us then when we celebrate the launch of Saint Thomas s yearly campaign to raise unrestricted funds for the operating budgets of the church and the school. Concerts at Saint Thomas will open its season with a pair in October. The opening concert on Saturday, October 21, at 1:15 p.m., will feature Saint Thomas Carrillonneur, Julie Zhu, playing a prelude on the Saint Thomas Carillon, followed immediately by Organist and Director of Music, Daniel Hyde, playing a program of North German and Dutch music. The concert is part of the sixth bi-annual New York Early Music Celebration. On Thursday, October 26, at 7:30 p.m., Daniel Hyde conducts The Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, Orchestra of St. Luke s, and soloists in Arvo Pärt s Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, John Rutter s Visions, Ralph Vaughan Williams s Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus, and Vaughan Williams s great plea for peace, Dona Nobis Pacem. Tickets can be purchased online at or by calling the Concerts Office at The 2016 Saint Thomas Yearbook has been ed to active members. Hard copies are available at the reception desk. If you did not receive the yearbook via and would like to, please contact us at yearbook@saintthomaschurch.org. The Annual Election for the Vestry of Saint Thomas Church will be held on December 5, Members of the parish are encouraged to suggest candidates for consideration to any member of the Nominating Committee or complete a suggestion form available at the reception desk on or before Sunday, October 8, Candidates must be baptized, confirmed, and communicant members of Saint Thomas Church. In addition, they must attend services regularly, and be recorded contributors to the support of Saint Thomas Church and Choir School. This year there will be three vacancies on the Vestry: Andrea Lippke, Lloyd Stanford and Murray Hood are eligible for re-election. Andrea has chosen not to stand for reelection because of family and professional commitments. The members of the Nominating Committee are: Kazie Metzger Harvey, Chairman; Brigita Abolins; Louise Hood; Jay Sterling; Pamela Lewis; Frank Reinauer, alternate.
6 Donations for Hurricane Relief: Saint Thomas will make a donation to Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) for the victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma and invites parishioners to do so as well. Contributing to ERD will support the work of our church partners as they serve the most vulnerable in their communities. They are best positioned to assess needs and timing for response efforts. One of the immediate ways ERD and our partners help individuals is by handing out gift cards to local stores so that people can choose what they need the most. It not only affords people dignity; it also helps stimulate the local economy, which needs to recover post-disaster. You may leave a check in the plate or at the reception desk made payable to Saint Thomas Church with Hurricane relief in the memo section. You may also visit the website and make an online donation. The Bookstore is open following the 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. services today. New in stock: a translation of Augustine s Confessions by Sarah Ruden and Auden, The Psalms, and Me by J. Chester Johnson (both used for the Adult Education classes). Also in stock: All Saints: The Surprising True Story of How Refugees from Burma Brought Life to a Dying Church written by Father Michael Spurlock and Jeanette Windle and the 2018 Christian Pocket Diary. ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION The Genesis of Orthodoxy. This morning at 10 a.m., the Sunday class on the Christian theological tradition continues, seeking to answer four questions: 1) What is the concept of Christian orthodoxy? 2) What is the content of Christian orthodoxy? 3) How did it come about? 4) Why does it matter? Today we turn to the First Council of Constantinople (A.D. 381). In finalizing the Nicene Creed as we use it today, the Council affirmed the full humanity of Jesus Christ and the full deity of the Holy Spirit. Next week we look at the First Council of Ephesus (A.D. 431), the third of the ecumenical councils. The Expressive Augustine: Making Scripture New Again. On Wednesday, September 27, at 6:30 p.m., we welcome Dr. Sarah Ruden, an esteemed classicist who recently produced a fresh translation of Augustine s Confessions. As she explains, Augustine follows the literary convention of utilizing Scripture in his book, but does so in a way that is surprisingly expressive and intimate. The result is a text undergirded by a deep joy, a confident hope, and a clear pleasure taken in his personal relationship with God. The Theology of the Church Building. On Tuesdays in October, at 6:30 p.m., this new class undertakes a theological study of the church building. Taught by Evangelism Coordinator David Daniel, the class is intended for parishioners and newcomers who want to understand the relationship between the particulars of the building they worship in and the worship services themselves. Careful examination shows that the building anticipates and echoes in stone, glass, and wood that which is said and sung in its liturgies and sacraments. The first session, on October 3, examines the layout and design of the building; subsequent sessions focus on the chancel and sanctuary (October 10), the stained glass (October 17 and 24), and the reredos (October 31). Friday Bible Study: Inexplicably, the Bible study finished the book of Jonah in three weeks. If you care to tackle the Epistle to the Hebrews with us, join us in the living room of the parish house on Fridays at 12:45 p.m. Newcomers are always welcome.
