SAINT THOMAS CHURCH FIFTH AVENUE in the CITY OF NEW YORK The Reverend Andrew C. Mead, OBE, DD, Rector John Scott, LVO, D.Mus., Organist and Director of Music The Reverend Charles F. Wallace, Headmaster Welcome to Saint Thomas, a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Our mission is to worship, love and serve Our Lord Jesus Christ through the Anglican tradition and our unique choral heritage. Please switch off all cellular telephones and pagers. THE FEAST OF DEDICATION OCTOBER 6, 2013 FESTAL EUCHARIST 11 a.m. with The Saint Thomas Brass Setting Messe Solennelle Jean Langlais ( ) Prelude Canzon Septimi Toni Giovanni Gabrieli (c ) The Spitfire Prelude William Walton ( ) arranged by Tom Winpenny (b. 1983) Hymn C HRIST is made the sure foundation, And the precious corner-stone, Who, the two walls underlying, Bound in each, binds both in one, Holy Sion s help for ever, And her confidence alone. Christ is made the sure foundation WESTMINSTER ABBEY arranged by John Rutter (b. 1945) 3. To this temple, where we call thee, Come, O Lord of hosts, today; With thy wonted loving-kindness, Hear thy people as they pray; And thy fullest benediction Shed within its walls for ay. 2. All that dedicated city, Dearly loved by God on high, In exultant jubilation Pours perpetual melody, God in One, in Threefold glory, Singing everlastingly. 4. Here vouchsafe to all thy servants Gifts of grace by prayer to gain; Here to have and hold for ever, Those good things their prayers obtain, And hereafter, in thy glory, With thy blessed ones to reign. 5. Laud and honour to the Father, Laud and honour to the Son, Laud and honour to the Spirit, Ever Three and ever One, One in love, and One in splendour, While unending ages run. Amen. The Opening Acclamation and the Collect for Purity

Gloria in excelsis Deo The Collect of the Day The Old Testament Lesson Habakkuk 2:1-4 Psalm 84 (Sung by the Choir. Please remain seated.) O Anglican Chant (Parry) HOW amiable are thy dwellings,* thou Lord of hosts! 2 My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord;* my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. 3 Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest, where she may lay her young;* even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. 4 Blessed are they that dwell in thy house;* they will be alway praising thee. 5 Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee;* in whose heart are thy ways. 6 Who going through the vale of misery use it for a well;* and the pools are filled with water. 7 They will go from strength to strength,* and unto the God of gods appeareth every one of them in Sion. 8 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer;* hearken, O God of Jacob. 9 Behold, O God our defender,* and look upon the face of thine Anointed. 10 For one day in thy courts* is better than a thousand. 11 I had rather be a door-keeper in the house of my God,* than to dwell in the tents of ungodliness. 12 For the Lord God is a light and defence;* the Lord will give grace and worship; and no good thing shall he withhold from them that live a godly life. 13 O Lord God of hosts,* blessed is the man that putteth his trust in thee. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,* and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end. Amen. The Epistle Hebrews 10:35 11:1 Hymn 360 The Holy Gospel Saint John 20:24-29 Sermon The Rector The Nicene Creed The Prayers of the People (Please kneel.) Celebrant: Our help is in the Name of the Lord; People: Who hath made heaven and earth. Celebrant: Blessed be the Name of the Lord People: Henceforth, world without end. Celebrant: Except the Lord build the house; People: Their labour is but lost that build it. Celebrant: Except the Lord keep the city; People: The watchman waketh but in vain. O ROUEN ALMIGHTY God, who hast built thy Church upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner-stone; Grant that, by the operation of the Holy Ghost, all Christians may be so joined together in unity of spirit and in the bond of peace, that they may be an holy temple acceptable unto thee. And especially to this Congregation present, give the abundance of thy grace; that with one heart they may desire the prosperity of thy holy Apostolic Church, and with one mouth may profess the faith once delivered to the Saints. Defend them from the sins of heresy and schism; let not the foot of pride come nigh to hurt them, nor the hand of the ungodly to cast them down. And grant that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by thy governance, that thy Church may joyfully serve thee in all godly quietness; that so they may walk in the ways of truth and peace, and at last be numbered with thy saints in glory everlasting; through thy merits, O blessed Jesus, thou gracious Bishop and Shepherd of our souls, who art with the Father and the Holy Ghost one God, world without end. Amen. (Read at the service for the Laying of the Corner-stone)

The Confession and Absolution The Peace The Greetings At the Offertory, Anthem I (Please be seated.) WAS glad when they said unto me, we will go into the house of the Lord. Our feet shall stand in thy gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is builded as a city, that is at unity in itself. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and plenteousness within thy palaces. The Great Thanksgiving Sanctus and Benedictus The Breaking of the Bread Invitation to Communion Psalm 122:1-3, 6-7 All baptized Christians are invited to receive Holy Communion. The Sacrament is distributed at the High Altar and, for convenience and accessibility, also at the Chantry Chapel Altar. At the Communion, Agnus Dei and Anthem L OCUS iste a Deo factus est, Inaestimabile sacramentum, Irreprehensibilis est. Gradual for Mass for the Dedication of a Church C. Hubert H. Parry ( ) This is God s house, A temple he has made, A holy covenant beyond all telling, Worthy of his glorious name. Anton Bruckner ( ) The Postcommunion Prayer The Blessing and Dismissal Coronation Te Deum (Sung by the Choir.) William Walton W E praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud; the Heavens, and all the Powers therein; To thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets praise thee. The noble army of Martyrs praise thee. The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee; The Father, of an infinite Majesty; Thine adorable, true, and only Son; Also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter. T HOU art the King of Glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, thou didst humble thyself to be born of a Virgin. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come to be our Judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy Saints, in glory everlasting.

O LORD, save thy people, and bless thine heritage: Govern them, and lift them up for ever. Day by day we magnify thee; And we worship thy Name ever, world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us. O Lord, let thy mercy be upon us, as our trust is in thee. O Lord, in thee have I trusted; let me never be confounded. 5 MUSIC NOTES Jean Langlais ( ), blind from birth, was educated at the Institut Nationale des Jeunes Aveugles and the Paris Conservatoire where, under the tutelage of Marcel Dupré, Charles Tournemire and Paul Dukas (and with Olivier Messiaen as a fellow student) he took all the major prizes in organ-playing, improvisation and composition. Having returned to his old school (the Institute for Blind Children) as a teacher, Langlais went on to become Organist of St. Pierre de Montrouge and, in 1945, of Ste. Clotilde, following in the steps of Charles Tournemire and César Franck. The Messe Solennelle was regarded by Langlais himself as an expression of his profound faith - the Gloria building through complex counterpoint to its magnificent conclusion in gloria Dei Patris, the Sanctus with its sinuous chromaticism giving way to the jubilant Hosanna and the Agnus Dei marking the petitions for peace with ever-increasing urgency. The flowers today are offered to the glory of God and in memory of the following: Robert Erskine Douglas, William Harris Douglas, Margaret Crane Hurlbut, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hamilton Kissam, and George Stevens Schermerhorn. Sunday Services: 8, 9, 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday Services: 8 a.m., 12:10 and 5:30 p.m. (The Tuesday 12:10 p.m. Eucharist includes a healing service.) CHORAL EUCHARIST Sermon by Father Daniels 4 P.M. CHORAL EVENSONG: MEMORIAL FOR GORDON H. CLEM Sermon by The Rector PARISH NOTICES Please Note: Unauthorized recordings and the taking of unauthorized photographs at SAINT THOMAS CHURCH FIFTH AVENUE are prohibited. If you are a visitor this morning, we welcome you to Saint Thomas Church. We encourage you to complete a Welcome Card which you can find in the rack at the end of the pews or in the narthex at the front of the church. This Sunday marks the start of the 2014 Every Member Canvass. The theme of this Canvass is that of faith as illustrated in the emotional interaction between Christ and Thomas one week after the Resurrection. It was not until Jesus appeared in the Upper Room and told Thomas to touch his wounds that Thomas believed. Knowing he was in the presence of the risen Lord, Thomas fell to his knees and said My Lord and My God! Jesus responded Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed, the words selected as the theme of this year s Canvass. The 2013 Canvass has broken $1.5 million from 640 pledges. Please help us make our Centennial Canvass the most successful ever by pledging now. Pledge Cards are available in the 2014 EMC Brochures that are in the pews and the Narthex. Please join us in Andrew Hall after the 11 a.m. service for a festive Coffee Hour marking the start of the 2014 Every Member Canvass.

ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Study of the book of Job: This class is trying to untangle and find insight in the speeches of Job s friends (who turn against him) and in Job s replies. New people are welcome every week: on Thursdays at 12:40 p.m. on the second floor of the Parish House, and on Sundays at 10 a.m. on the fifth floor. (The same material is covered, first on Thursday, then on Sunday.) Each class has coffee and tea, and if you come, thee. Starting this week: a reading class in Aquinas. On Wednesday evenings at 6:30, starting October 9 and continuing October 23 and weekly thereafter, Father Austin plans to read through Questions 12 and 13 of the First Part of the Summa theologiae, on how God is known and what names we can literally use when we speak about God. A free, Internet translation will be available in class; there is a fine if pricey translation by Herbert McCabe in the Bookstore, for those who would like it. No reading need be done before the class, which will meet in Andrew Hall for one hour. Our Lady of Alice Bhatti is a contemporary novel about a Christian woman of slum origins in Karachi, Pakistan, who has some part-time healing powers. Yet all is far from miraculous. Its author, Mohammed Hanif, takes the reader into important interreligious and social-caste questions. Those who read the novel are invited to the next Good Books and Good Talk seminar on Monday, October 28, at 6:15 p.m.
