Membership in the Orthodox Church begins at baptism (Chrismation for some) and continues throughout our life. We are united with Christ through the sacraments, or mysteries, of the Church and through our faithful offering of our entire selves to Jesus Christ. Our Archdiocese requires each parish to distinguish between voting members and non-voting members. A voting member is over 18 years of age and turns in a signed stewardship commitment card, committing a portion of time, talent and treasure to the Church. The Archdiocese also requires the voting member to remain current through the year on their commitments. Keep in mind that true membership in the Body of Christ involves living according to His word and within His Church. Why must I commit to give a specific amount? Please keep in mind that your stewardship of money is kept in the strictest of confidence. However, we do compile the amounts anticipated to better plan our budget. What if I cannot fulfill my stewardship commitment? During the course of a year, people s circumstances change. Your stewardship is valued because it is made out of your love for God and His Church. Please do not be concerned if you are unable to meet your stewardship commitment we are glad you are a part of this parish. _Please cut out and mail _back _ St. Elias the Prophet Santa Fe, New Mexico 46 Calle Electra Santa Fe, NM telephone Sacrificial Stewardship 2013 Commitment Card Because of God s great love and grace to me and my family, we wish to help share God s love throughout the year with our monthly proportional support of the mission and ministries of the Assumption Cathedral. 3 SAINT TRYPHON FEBRUARY 1 O Saint Tryphon was from Lampsacus in Phrygia and lived during the reigns of Emperor Gordian ( ), Philip ( ) and Decius ( ). He came from a poor family and his childhood herding geese to live. At the same time earnestly studying the Bible with reverence and performed his religious duties. So, little by little, Trifon the pious curiosity, managed not only to teach himself, but also to teach the eternal truths of the faith. Soon the pious soul accepted the grace of the Holy Spirit and God the Trypho claimed to miraculous. But the Saint healed not just any disease, but also purify contaminated by demons souls. When the emperor Gordian, learned about the miraculous abilities Tryphon, begged him to heal his sick daughter. O Emperor tried to express his gratitude, offering the Holy axioms and money, but the Trifon politely refused. When Emperor Decius became unleashed fierce persecution against Christians. In 250 AD Santa, because they worshiped the gods of the pagan religion was a Christian and was stopped by a soldier named considers (or load) and brought before the prefect of the East, and Tiberius Claudius Granchou Akylinou at Nice in Bithynia. The seer Pom- peian introduced him to the princes. Saint Tryphon bravely confessed his faith. Then subjected to horrific torture. He katatrypisan with swords over his body, then tied him by the feet in horses and dragged him in terrible cold hours in rough and rocky sites. He prayed and said, 'Sir, did not charge this sin. " After the horrible martyrdom sofronisthike asked if he wanted to sacrifice to idols. Witness of Jesus replied then the prefect Akylino "unholy and evil chief may be sofronismenos you when you're drunk by the devil? I always spend my life with wisdom, be- cause I have Christ's hope my assistant." After that put him in prison in order to give him a deadline to get rid of the "dementia" and that to deny his faith in Christ. A few days after the prefect called the Saint and asked him if the time of year and torture convinced him to sacrifice to the gods. The Holy and again pleaded with intellectual prowess the Name of God. Then dragged naked on iron nails, after being whipped and then burned with torches in their hand. In the end, once the witness gave his soul to God saying, "Lord Jesus Christ, Dexa my spirit," cut off the head of this honestly. Christians received the relics of martyrs and after anointed with precious ointment and wrapped in Sindo, lodged in the urn and sent to the city of Lampsacus against his wish. A Church dedicated to St. Tryphon built by Justinian the Great ( AD) in place of Stork Constantinople. Monastery of St. Tryphon stated after the 9th century AD, adjacent to the Metropolis of Chalcedon, which later became a monk Patriarch Nicholas Undercover ( , BC). Commemorated on January 12 The "Milk-Giver" Icon of the Mother of God was originally located at the Lavra of St Sava the Sanctified near Jerusalem. Before his death, the holy founder of the Lavra foretold that a royal pilgrim having the same name as himself would visit the Lavra. St Sava told the brethren to give the wonderworking icon to that pilgrim as a blessing. In the thirteenth century, St Sava of Serbia visited the Lavra. As he approached the reliquary of St Sava the Sanctified, the saint's staff fell at his feet. The brethren asked the visitor his name, and he told them he was Archbishop Sava of Serbia. Obeying the instructions of their founder, the monks gave St Sava his staff, the "Milk-Giver" Icon, and the Icon "Of the Three Hands" (June 28 & July 12). The holy archbishop took the icon to Hilandar on Mount Athos and put it on the right side of the iconosta- sis in the church of St Sava at the kellion of Karyes, which is at- tached to Hilandar. The icon was later named Typikonissa, since the Rule (Typikon) of St Sava was preserved there. Commemorated on February 19 The Cyprus Icon of the Mother of God. In this icon the Mother of God is depicted sitting on a throne with the Divine Infant in Her arms. There is an angel on either side of Her. The prototype of this holy icon manifested itself in the year 392 on the island of Cyprus at the tomb of Righteous Lazarus, the friend of Christ (October 17), and is kept there in a monastery. Renowned copies of the Cyprus Icon are at the Moscow's Dormition Cathe- dral, and in the Nikolo-Golutvin church in the village of Stromyn, Mos- cow diocese (Commemorated on the Sunday of Orthodoxy). During the week of the Triumph of Or- thodoxy, the Greek Synaxarion has an account of an icon which is proba- bly the Cyprus Icon. On the island of Cyprus a certain Arab was passing by a church dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. In order to display his ha- tred for Christianity, the man shot an arrow at an icon of the Mother of God which hung by the gate. The arrow struck the Virgin's knee, from which blood began to flow. Overcome with fear, the Arab spurred his horse and rode for home, but was struck dead before he could get there. In this way, he was punished for his impiety. Other days commemorating the Cy- prus Icon are the Day of the Holy Spirit, April 20, and July 9. Some cop- ies of the Cyprus Icon have additional names such as "Cleansing," "Knife," and "Hawk." The "Stromyn" Cyprus Icon became famous in An eighteen-year-old girl from Stromyn, a village not far from Moscow, was close to death from an illness. In a dream she saw the Cyprus Icon standing over the entrance to the church, and a voice came from the icon: "Take me into your home and have the priest serve a Molieben with the Blessing of Water, and you will be cured." The sick girl was brought to the church and finally located the icon after a long search. The girl obeyed the command of the Most Holy Theotokos, and after the Molieben she felt strong enough to carry the icon back to the church herself. Shortly thereafter, she was completely healed. The "Stromyn" Cyprus Icon continued to work miracles of healing, which the rector of the church reported to the holy Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow (November 19).
