1 Trinitarian Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 10 Mill Road, New Rochelle, New York January15 February 2018 Edition Happy New Year Fellow Parishioners, I hope you had blessed Christmas and New Year holidays with loved ones close by. I also hope that you have recovered from the stress of these beautiful and important family events, dinners, gift buying, giving and exchanging! For us here in our family it was a special time having Kalli home with little Simi and Demetri in the house. There is a passage from the book of Proverbs in the Old Testament which states, where there is no vision, the people will perish. I think about that often within the context of our Community and, after two decades, especially during these first month of each year, try to redirect myself to the vision of Holy Trinity Church for I might say that our immediate vision would be to make the Community continuously accessible for all to worship at, study in, and gather at for the many ministries Holy Trinity offers. It s always a joy to cut the Vasilopeta in January to recognize the leaders of all the ministries and organizations within the parish s framework. Each ministry and group is a spoke in the wheel that keeps turning with the axle being the Good Lord Himself, asking Him to guide us down the path of our lives as one family. In a discussion I had just a few days ago with a dear friend, we were reminding each other that being a member of Holy Trinity, and any Church for that matter, is not simply joining yet another club or organization. Rather; being a member of a Parish family is a commitment to a lifestyle of worship, service and faith in God. I, as your priest, must do my very best to foster a spirit of Christian fellowship, to guide the wagon down the path for all of us to follow, while at the same time balance the ministries to run within the framework of one Community. Each ministry that meets at the Church has to have Christ as its central figure. Each organization that meets has to know that the Church is hosting them to do God s work here on earth. For me, that s my immediate vision. The long term vision must be decided upon by all of us! What direction do we want the Church to go in! Which will be the most necessary ministries that the Church can offer to best serve God and His people in the future? Let s keep those thoughts in the center of our minds when we speak of Holy Trinity for the next decade or two. Truthfully speaking, many of us may not all be around to fulfill these future dreams and aspirations for our Church but, as the Good Book says, where there is no vision, the people will perish! For that reason alone, let us stay weekly connected, not weakly connected! Faithfully, Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America

9 January 2018 Dear Philoptochos Sisters, Fellow Parishioners and Friends, 2017 was a very successful and rewarding year for our Ladies Philoptochos Society of Holy Trinity and was our best ever in attracting new members. Thanks to our 2017 Membership Chair, Elizabeth Zoulis, we have over 200 members and our Chapter is growing each and every day! Our annual Candlelight Dinner on December 7 was very successful. We began with a lovely cocktail hour followed by a delicious dinner made by chef Manny Louros. This year, we were proud to have honored two very deserving pillars of our community Helen Hiotakis and Sappho Papaioannou for their many years of service to our Holy Trinity community and their continued membership and contributions to our Ladies Philoptochos. During the evening, there was a Fur Fashion Show, many raffle prizes including a beautiful fur trimmed cape helped make the evening a huge success. Thank you to our Chairwomen, Serene Romas and Marina Sirras, and to Joy Zegras, Eleni Zikopoulos, Maria Valliades, Angie Lambros, Elizabeth Zoulis, Diane Soukas and the entire planning committee for hosting such a festive and very successful holiday party. The Annual Easter Market, under the leadership of our late, beloved friend and Easter Market mentor, Linda Kyriakos Faustini, was a huge success, surpassing all prior years, clearing more than $16,000! The proceeds enabled us to meet our commitment to sponsor a studio room at the new St. Michael's Home. The Community Food Drive collected thousands of non perishable grocery items for the HOPE Food Pantry. Thank you to everyone who brought in food, and an extra special thank you to our Sunday School students for their Grocery Bag Food Drive for the HOPE Food Pantry. Cooking for Hope, encourages volunteers to meet in our church kitchen and cook a meal for the homeless, which is distributed the next morning to our local New Rochelle homeless. If you would like to volunteer, contact Stephanie Madouros or Linda Kondos. Our Comedy Night, with comedian Ellen Karis, chaired by Diane Soukas held on September 30, was a huge success with 218 people in attendance. A night of laughter and camaraderie with many of our sister churches in attendance was enjoyed. Once again our Annual Hats and Gloves for the Homeless drive took place on December 17. Packages of hats, gloves and hand made scarves by our Knitting for Charity group were bought by our parishioners and were distributed to the homeless during the Christmas week Soup Run. Thank you to all who participated and to Despina Kartson and Anthoula Deknatel for organizing this holiday project. As you know from the monthly reports, our Homeless Outreach Ministry/Soup Run provides food and warm clothing to those who have fallen on hard times. Thank you to all who sponsor, support and volunteer for this very worthy ministry and to Despina Kartson and Maria Scaros for their dedication. Please refer to the Sunday Bulletin for further details on how you can get involved. Congratulations to Anthoula Deknatel, who is the lucky winner of the Holy Trinity Parking Space Raffle! We would like to thank everyone who supported the raffle, and especially Maria Komodikis for donating the parking space to be raffled. The money collected will be donated to our many charities that we support. As you can see, we had a very full year! If you did not join Philoptochos in 2017, please do so in We have many more opportunities for all who wish to be involved. Wishing you a very happy and healthy New Year! 27 Guidelines for Fasting The fast for the forty days of Lent is indicated below, though many are not able to hold to the strict fast. We offer the following guidelines to be considered prayerfully with the guidance of your spiritual father and in consideration of any medical conditions or dietary requirements. Strict Fast~ No Meat, Fish, Milk, Dairy Products, Oil, or Oil Products Palm Sunday~ Fish, Oil & Wine permitted FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION/MARCH 25TH~ All day: Fish, Oil & Wine Permitted Shellfish are permitted throughout Great Lent ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ON FASTING Do you fast? Give Me Proof of it by your works. If you see a poor man, take pity on him. If you see a friend being honored, do not envy him. Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eye and the ear and the feet and the hands and all the members of our bodies. Let the hands fast, by being free of avarice. Let the feet fast, by ceasing to run after sin. Let the eyes fast, By disciplining them not to glare at that which is sinful. Let the mouth fast from foul words and unjust criticism. For what good is it if we abstain from birds and fishes, but bite and devour our brothers? May He who came to the world to save sinners strengthen us to complete the fast with humility, have mercy on us and save us. The Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian Read each weekday during Great Lent O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk. But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant. Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother, for blessed art Thou, unto ages of ages. Amen. Jesus Instructions on Fasting Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face so that you do not appear to men to be fasting but to your father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. Gospel of Matthew Chapter 6:16-18 Prayer to the Holy Spirit Heavenly King, Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Present in all places and filling all things, The treasury of blessings and Giver of life: Come and abide in us. Cleanse us from all impurity, and save our souls, O Gracious Lord Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and fasting with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding will keep your hearts and your minds in Jesus Christ. ~St. Paul s letter to the Philippians One key to a more fulfilling life is prayer. For Orthodox Christians, the aim of prayer is to enter into conversation with God. Prayer is sometimes referred to as dialogue with God. Often it is a waiting on God in silence. In the church it is defined as the lifting of the mind and heart to God, and also as walking in the presence of God. We turn our mind and thoughts towards Him. We mentally gaze at Him and speak with Him in reverence, fear, and hope. At times we speak to Him with words and at other times we stand in reverent silence. Saying nothing, but being aware of His presence. In this dialogue with God we praise Him and thank Him. We ask Him for what we need. Our mind and our hearts are open to Him. Prayer is not only repeating words, it is trust in God that he hears and directs us in His Way involving spiritual growth and development.
