3 The Holy Thursday Service on Thursday, April 5 at 7 p.m. consists of three parts: the Mass; the Washing of the Feet of 12 appointed persons; and the solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament. We invite all those who serve the Parish in different ministries to attend the Holy Thursday ceremony and to participate in this procession at the end of Mass. The congregation will remain kneeling during the procession of the Blessed Sacrament. Good Friday Collection Presence. Care. Service. On Good Friday (April 6), our parish will take up the annual Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. Your financial contribution helps to support the struggling Christian community and to protect Christianity s holiest places. Your generosity is always appreciated. Good Friday All Night Vigil Following the Stations on Good Friday evening, the Knights of Columbus will conduct their Watch at the Tomb. Members of the K of C will continue their vigil from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Holy Saturday morning. They are extending an invitation to all who are interested to come and join them in keeping vigil for all or part of the night. If anyone should say to you Why are you doing this? reply, The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.. ~Mark 11:3 Why are you doing this? This is a question that could be asked of anyone who gives time, talent or treasure to the Church. An answer is found in the Gospel of Mark, The Master has need of it We are all called to give because Our Lord has need of it. *Mass Book for 2013 Opens on April 24 Masses are scheduled in person Tuesday-Friday, from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. If you are unable to come before 4 p.m., give us a call, and we ll try to have someone available. Come to the Rectory to: Schedule a Mass for a loved one (living or deceased.) Schedule a Special Intention for a loved one (living or deceased.) Make an offering in honor or in memory of a loved one for The Living Flame, Bread and Wine or Altar Flowers. *Please note: There are still some 2012 masses available. Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection, not in books alone but in every leaf in springtime. ~ML Saturday, April 7, 1 p.m. Although Holy Week is the most solemn week of the year, it also contains a custom that brings joy to many families. One custom is the practice of bringing Easter baskets to church to have them blessed on Holy Saturday. Part of the joy is in preparing the foods that will be blessed and eaten on the first meal of Easter, breaking the Great Fast (Lent). Many families take pride in the preparation of the foods that they have blessed. Foods traditionally blessed for Easter include: Eggs, brightly decorated, symbolize the new life that is ours in Christ. They are signs of hope and resurrection. Jesus comes forth from the tomb just as the chick breaks the eggshell at birth. The Easter bread (babka) is sweet, yeast bread rich in eggs and butter; symbolic of Christ himself, our True Bread of Life. Kielbasa, made of pork, recalls God s favor and generosity. Its round link reminds us of the chains of death, which were broken when Jesus arose. Some see in the round link the eternity of God. Ham celebrates the freedom of the New Law that came into effect through Jesus resurrection. The Old Law forbade certain meats, pork being one of them. Ham became popular with Slavs as a main dish because of its richness and symbolism of the great joy and abundance of Easter that inaugurates the New Covenant. Horseradish represents the bitter herb prescribed in the original Passover meal as a reminder of the bitterness and harshness of life in Egypt. It reminds us of the bitterness and suffering of Christ which culminates in the joy of the Resurrection. The butter in the basket is frequently shaped in the form of a lamb representing the Paschal Lamb, the Lamb of God by whose blood we are saved. Wine is the drink of the Passover meal and the Last Supper. The wine reminds us of the Glory of Easter. The wine gladdens our hearts and helps us enter into the joy of the Resurrection. Take the time to prepare an Easter basket for your Easter meal. If possible, make it a family project with your children or spouse, a friend or neighbor. Parish Food Pantry Our Food Pantry is serving many families and individuals this winter. For many, the Pantry is a vital resource in their daily challenge to make ends meet. Our goal is to assist families in meeting their basic food needs. The OLMC Food Pantry could not exist without the support of our parish community. We are always in need of nonperishable foods and donations. Please leave your donations in one of the vestibules facing the parking lot. Page 3 ~ 577~ Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
