1 2014 Study Abroad Program Rome/Campania Classics 372: Topics in Roman Culture Welcome to the Study Abroad Program in Rome and Campania. The academic part of the program is a 3 credit course entitled Topics in Roman Culture (Classics 372). In this syllabus you will find: 1: Information on the three academic assignments for the course. 2: An outline of the daily visits to the sites. All the other information you will find in the Handbook and the other material supplied by the IAP. There is no better way to learn about the Romans and the Roman Empire than to visit the sites and the museums in the country where their history unfolded. For this course you do not need a textbook. The local guides and your instructor will help you to imagine the course of history against the backdrop of the Eternal City. Course Information: Instruction for this course is grounded in visits to museums and the sites of Roman civilization. Students will write three essays of five pages in length for the value of three credits. One essay covers modern Italian culture and society, while the other two cover buildings from Imperial Rome that have played a central role in the history of the city. On top of the three credits you will receive an educational experience unlike anything else you have ever been through.

2 Assignments for the course: There are three assignments for this course, two of which concern important buildings in Rome: The temple of Mars Ultor in the Forum of Augustus and the Golden House of Nero. They contain primary sources in translation and a number of illustrations to help you visualize the buildings in their complete state. For each assignment you have to answer three questions, and for some of them you have to read additional material online (either available through JSTOR or made available on through the MyStudyAbroad Portal). You may submit your answers at any time during your stay in Italy, or you may submit them after you have returned from your stay in Italy. The final deadline for submission is 15 June, no later than 4:00 PM. You are encouraged to submit your answers electronically to mkleijwegt@wisc.edu. You will write and submit the third writing assignment during our time in Italy. You can choose whatever topic you want to discuss, but it has to be related to contemporary life in Italy. It could be religion, food, traffic, human interaction etc. There is no specific deadline for this assignment; just make sure that the assignment is submitted (either in hard copy or in digital format) before the program ends on 6/6/2014. The length of the essay is 2,000 words, which is approximately 5 or 6 pages. I will show you the sites of these buildings and I will provide you with the necessary background information. It is therefore vital to bring your notebooks with you for the site visits. I will explain my expectations on a number of occasions during our stay in Rome. It helps if you read through the assignments once or twice during your time in Rome to see what you are being asked to do, even if you are not thinking of submitting your answers while you are in Italy. Each assignment will count towards 33⅓% of your final grade. Participation is a requirement, not an option. Program: Day 1: Monday 19 May: arrival in Italy; welcoming dinner.

3 Day 2: Tuesday 20 May: Visit to the Colosseum and the Forum Romanum. Day 3: Wednesday 21 May: Visit to the Palatine and the Capitoline Museums. Day 4: Thursday 22 May: Visit to Saint Peter s Basilica, the Vatican and the Vatican Museums. Day 5: Friday 23 May: Visit to Ostia Antica.

4 Day 6: Saturday 24 May: Visit to the Villa Borghese. Day 7: Sunday 25 May: Visit to the Campus Martius; Campo dei Fiori; afternoon: Visit to Palazzo Valentini (Le Domus Romane). Day 8: Monday 26 May: Visit Piazza Navona; Pantheon; Chiesa di Sant Ignazio (paintings by Andrea Pozzo); Largo Argentina.
