2 Witnessing Forgiving Loving Helping Igniting Teaching Evangelizing Support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal helps our Church to encourage and provide the opportunity for tomorrow s priests to discern their vocation. When a priest is ordained when a person becomes a deacon or lay minister your gifts have helped in their formation. Ordained in 2014, Fr. Joseph Scolaro answered the call to serve when he began the program of priestly formation at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Today Fr. Scolaro is the Pastor of Notre Dame in New Hyde Park. I know first-hand how important the Catholic Ministries Appeal is. It helped to support my formation and gave me the freedom to really focus on my studies. Now as a priest in the Diocese, I feel blessed that God has chosen me to make the Body and Blood of Christ present on the altar and to bring that gift to the people, bring God to the people the same people who helped to bring me to this point by their support. Please consider donating to the Appeal and a difference in someone s life. Thank you! 3 FROM THE DESK OF SEMINARIAN JOE Very often, no matter how satisfying life can be, it is healthy for people to take a step back from the busyness for some time of quiet and reflection. Being part of the SJE community over the past 8 months has been no different for me. I love being part of this community of faith, but it was time to step away for a few days. Each year, I take some time to go on a retreat where I turn my phone off no calls, texts, s, or social media. As scandalous as that may sound to some, it is refreshing to unplug from the many distractions that can arise in any given day and focus on prayer and rest. This year, the retreat was an eight-day silent retreat that walked through the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola. The purpose was to walk through Scripture and use imagination (a God given gift) to see how God was speaking to me. As I got used to the silence the prayer became even more enriched and I was able to recognize the closeness of God in my life. I share this with you in hopes that we can make time for silence in each of our lives. It doesn t have to be eight days in silence, but God speaks to us in the quiet of our hearts. One of the men I serve in prison helped me understand this when he told me that he had never been religious or spiritual at least until he had ended up in prison. It was only in the quiet of his cell that he felt his loneliness it cried out for his need for God. My prayer is that each of us can take time to feel that loneliness, normally numbed by distractions, and know that it can be filled by an all-knowing and all-loving God who desires to be close to each of us! God Bless, Joe Family Life Ministry NEXT WEEKEND February 10th Sandwich Day The Sandwich Making Day will start in the auditorium at 10am. Bring coldcuts or PB and J. And lots of bread!! Altar servers assist at Masses, prayer services and sacramental celebrations. They are invaluable members of the parish community who contribute a great deal to parish life...and we re working to have some more community building times as well! Altar servers need to be in fourth grade or above, should be attending Sunday Mass and desire to get more involved in the life of the parish and the Church. We will begin training soon! If your child is interested, please leave a message for Fr. John at jsureau@sjecm.org or via phone at St. John the Evangelist Page 9

Gracias! Stewardship How can I repay the LORD for all the great good done for me? Psalm 116:2 Sunday 1/27/19: $15,832 (2018: $13,965) Each week, we provide envelopes for specific areas of parish life. This allows us to focus our stewardship in certain areas. Ideally, we would love to have a strong regular collection which would make these envelopes unnecessary. Next week, please make use of the Parish Improvements envelope and/or place your offering in the regular collection. Join the Knights of Columbus In 2018, our parish Knight of Columbus Council 4126 accomplished so many things, from donating coats to children, supporting the Special Olympics, helping towns destroyed by natural disasters, placing ultrasound machines in pregnancy centers and so much more. We re looking for more men from St. John s Parish to join us. With the Catholic Church under attack, now is the time to stand up in support of religious beliefs. PRAYER AND WORSHIP Next Week s Readings Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading I: Isaiah 6:1-2A, 3-8 Isaiah volunteers to speak for the Lord. Responsorial Psalm: PS 138:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 7-8 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 or 1 Corinthians 15:3-8, 11 Paul recounts the chronology of Christ. Gospel: Luke 5:1-11 An abundance of fish are caught by Simon. Discussion Questions 1. When you examine these readings, what might you see that Isaiah, Paul and Peter have in common? 2. Paul persecuted the Church but then, because of grace, he became a great minister of Christ. Was he given the grace solely for his own benefit? Explain. 3. Where did Peter have to go before he could catch fish in the lake? Where did he have to go in his personal life before he could catch people for God? Was everything up to him or did Peter receive extraordinary help? When are you yourself on the shore and when are you in the deep? If you would like to join, please call Grand Knight, Mike Lankau or Bill Morgan BRINGING UP THE GIFTS OF BREAD AND WINE St. John s invites family members of those for whom the Mass is being offered to bring up the gifts of bread and wine at that Mass. (On the weekend, please inform any of the ushers 10 minutes prior to the beginning of Mass). Low Gluten Host Available Low Gluten Hosts (less than.01% gluten content) are available for those with Celiac Disease who cannot receive Holy Communion using the usual bread. If you need to receive Holy Communion using a low-gluten host, please stop in the sacristy before Mass to discuss this with the priest and see if this will be acceptable for you and/or your child. If you cannot receive the low-gluten host, we can offer a separate chalice for you. We will be happy to accommodate you if we can. Please let us know. St. John the Evangelist Page 12
