3 FROM THE DESK OF SEMINARIAN JOE Every family has certain traditions when it comes to preparing for Christmas. My Grandmother s was to prepare her house in Elmhurst by painstakingly arranging a nativity set each year. The setup was similar each year; with the same plaster figures and crumpled paper she created Bethlehem in her living room. These very simple items were gifted from my great-grandparents to her when she came to the United States - a tradition that they started and handed off to her to continue. Whenever her crèche was set up, I knew it was time for Advent. There was a great beautiful simplicity to this that always reminded me that besides the glamor and lights we often see, the real meaning of the season is that of preparation for Christ s coming. When my grandmother passed away my godfather took up the tradition until he moved and gave me the figures and paper. In this Advent Season I would like to invite each of you to prepare your own Nativity set with care and concern, making sure that it is ready for Christmas morning when the Child Jesus is placed in the manger. Maybe as a parish community we can also begin a new family tradition. This year starting on December 23 rd, outside the Nativity, there will be a box for you to leave your gift to Jesus. These gifts aren t monetary or material they are promises that each of us can make to the Lord so that we can draw closer to him in the Christmas season and beyond. Write out your prayer and place it in the box it is that easy! I hope that this will help remind each of us (starting with me) that Christmas goes beyond the shining lights and the fancy gifts. WHAT S SJE DECK THE HALLS! It s that time of year again and we re looking for some volunteers to help us decorate the Rectory and Convent for Christmas! If you would like to help, we will gather after the 5:30 p.m. Mass on December 23rd. Please join us! St. John the Evangelist Page 3

This wasn t one of the easiest years for small business, but that isn t going to change who we are. One of our favorite times of year is Thanksgiving. This is our 8 th year of donating turkeys. This will be our 8 th year collecting food for families in need. From December 1 st to the 22 st when you bring in $20 of non-perishable food, you will receive a free oil change and tire rotation. All items will also be donated to our food panty here at St John's. We ask that you please check all expiration dates, as expired items will not be eligible. Please see our ad on the back of the bulletin. As always, we appreciate your continued support. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and Safe Happy New Year. The Posanti Family & the staff of Shirley Auto Body. In the main entrance of the church, there will be a Christmas tree that will have paper ornaments with an item needed. Please take one, or as many as you d like, and then return the item by placing it in the box next to the Christmas tree the next time you come to mass. Next week, please make use of the Parish Improvements envelope and/or place your offering in the regular collection. Christmas Celebration with Oplatki Families of Polish, Slovak a n d L i t h u a n i a n background observe this Christmas Eve Tradition. Family members and guests each are handed an oplatek and they each break off a piece from one another and eat it, expressing best wishes and blessings to each other, and asking for forgiveness. This is a tender, touching family celebration of love and forgiveness. Last year we only had 18 sets, and they all went fast. This year, St. Johns will be purchasing only 40 sets ($4/pkg (large-6 pcs/pkg white)). If this is something you would be interested in, please contact the rectory and provide your name and phone number. We will set aside your Christmas Oplatiki s and contact you when they arrive. Discussion Questions 1. If you were expecting a majestic ruler how would you have felt about the stable and manger? When you experience poverty in your life, do you accept it as a meeting place with God or do you run from it? 2. What does once and for all mean? Is it that Jesus coming to do his Father s will, completes the New Covenant and sanctifies us all? 3. The infant leaped for joy in Elizabeth s womb at the recognition of the soon to be born savior. Discuss this moment as mankind s welcome to the savior. How close do you come to leaping for joy when you recognize God s presence in your life? Christmas Spiritual Bouquet Cards Join in the Mass intentions for the Masses of Christmas by using the Christmas Spiritual Bouquet cards which are now available throughout the church. These cards are a wonderful and meaningful way for you to remember your loved ones at Christmas and to have them prayed for at Masses during the Christmas season. Return the envelope with your donation in the collection basket or bring it to the rectory, and keep the card to send your Christmas Spiritual Bouquet. St. John the Evangelist Page 12
