How was that date chosen and why? The date set for John the Baptist's birth only came into existence once the date to celebrate Jesus' birth was set. Evidence shows that by the middle of the fourth century Christians were celebrating the birth of Jesus around December 25. No one at that time knew when Jesus was born, but the date seemed to be selected to counter the Roman festival to the sun god. Once December 25 had been selected for the birth of Jesus, a number of other dates could be set, using the biblical evidence at hand. When the angel appeared to Mary and she conceived, her cousin, Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, was in her sixth month. If Jesus was born on December 25, then he had to be conceived nine months before, on March 25. If Elizabeth was then in her sixth month, then John the Baptist was due three months later on June 25. A rather convincing reason stems from John's witness in John's Gospel. There John the Baptist says that Jesus must increase and he, John, must decrease. The other Gospels also have John point to Jesus and not himself as the chosen one of God. In making John's birth a day less than Jesus' full nine months, the Christian community communicated this Gospel reality in its liturgical calendar. Thus the Christian community continued to highlight John's mission and ministry. Maybe we could strive toward that same mission in our own lives. 2 F P We take a break from our regular cycle of readings from Ordinary Time this weekend to celebrate the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. The story of John s birth is told in the Gospel of Luke, which we hear today. John is one of the first to recognize Jesus as the messiah, and one of the first disciples. His pointing to Christ is the example of what we are to do with our own lives. Our first session of summer faith formation has wrapped up and by all accounts was a success. We had over 200 young people in the first session. Second session starts on July 9 and I believe 120 young people are registered for that session. This program has become very popular over the past few years. Thank you again to those who plan, organize and implement the program. I hope you are finding some time this summer to slow down a bit and take some time for relaxation. This is very important for body and soul. Save the Date St. Joseph, Farley will hold their annual JulyFest on Sunday, July 8. There will be a Polka Mass at 9:30 AM with parade at 11:00 AM and auction at 12:30 PM. Chicken by FarFry. Lots of kids activities. Plan to come to enjoy some great food and fun! After the celebration of my 65th anniversary of ordination and 90th birthday, I started a successful three week treatment for skin cancer. With that distraction, I have been very slow in thanking you all for celebrating with me. It was a great mass and reception! Guests from afar had never seen so many desserts! The many cards were very thoughtful. Bless you all! On Sunday, June 17, Keri Hosch, was anointed with the chrism oil as she received the Sacrament of Confirmation after making her Profession of Faith in the Catholic Church. A B S There are several opportunities for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in our parishes; on Monday and Wednesday in Peosta, on Wednesday evenings in Placid, on Thursday at Epworth and before 8:00 AM Mass at Bankston on Friday. See the Mass schedule for times. All are invited to stop and pray for as long as you wish. The Epworth/Placid Knights of Columbus will meet in the Faith Formation Center on Thursday, June 28 from 7:00-8:00 PM. End of Fiscal Year Our church fiscal year ends on June 30. 3 TIME AND TALENT St. Clement An average of 10 people every week give 10 hours of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. St. Patrick One person gave 2.75 hours of time stuffing envelopes for a mailing. St. Joseph Two people set up the environment for Ordinary Time for a total of 3.5 hours. St. John, Peosta Every week approximately 34 people give 34 hours of time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. St. John, Placid--Two people gave three hours of time filling in to help with a Baptism and Reception to Full Communion into the Catholic Church. RESEARCH STUDY Rachael Ploessl, a student at Clarke University, is conducting interviews as part of a research study in individuals over the age of 65 with high blood pressure to have a better understanding of your experiences. Golf Outing Divine Word College Seminary, Epworth is hosting a Benefit Golf Outing on Friday, July 27 at Timberline Golf Course, Peosta. Outing begins with a shotgun start at 1:00 PM for the four person, 18 hole best shot format. Social and dinner will begin around 5:30 PM. A silent auction and raffle will also be part of the evening. $80 per golfer includes: golf, cart, prizes and steak dinner. You may attend just the dinner for $25.
