Every man fears the death of the flesh, few the death of the soul. In regard to the death of the flesh, which without a doubt must someday come, all guard against its coming: that is the reason for their labours. Man, destined to die, labours to avert his dying; and yet man, destined to live in eternity does not labour to avoid sinning. St. Augustine I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die (Jn 11: 25 26) We can imagine the surprise that such an announcement caused in his listeners, who a short time later, however, were able to see the truth of Jesus words when, at his command, Lazarus, who had already been in the tomb for four days, came forth alive. An even more striking confirmation of this astonishing statement will be given later by Jesus when, by His own Resurrection, He will win the final victory over evil and death. What had been foretold many centuries before by the prophet Ezekiel in addressing the Israelites deported to Babylon: I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live (Ez 37: 14), will become a reality in the paschal mystery and will be presented by the Apostle Paul as the essential core of the new life of believers: But you are not in the flesh, you are in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God really dwells in you (Rom 8:9). Does this not show the timeliness of the Gospel message? In a society in which signs of death are increasing but in which at the same time a profound need for hope in life is felt, it is the mission of Christians to continue to proclaim Christ, man s resurrection and life. Yes, faced with the signs of a creeping culture of death, Jesus great revelation must be heard today: I am the resurrection and the life. Let us repeat with the Evangelist: Yes, Lord; I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, He who is coming into the world (Jn 11:27). Like Martha, Lazarus sister, today we too wish to renew our faith in Jesus and our friendship with Him. By His Death and Resurrection we are given the fullness of life in the Holy Spirit. It is the divine life that can transform our existence into a gift of love for God and our brothers and sisters. Luke 16:19-31), the Holy Father invites Catholics to find "inspiration in this meaningful story, for it provides a key to understanding what we need to do in order to attain true happiness and eternal life. It exhorts us to sincere conversion." The primary way we enable this across Canada is through our Broadcast Partners at Salt + Light Television, VisionTV and yestv. Now the NCBC's Daily TV Mass (Monday-Saturday) is available anytime and anyplace on our new website, on our new YouTube Channel and in the near future on an APP for use on Apple or Android devices. "The Mass is the most favourable occasion to speak with the eternal Father, because then we offer Him His only Son as a victim for our salvation. Before celebrating, reflect on the sufferings of your Redeemer, commune peaceably with Him, even in the midst of dryness; carry to the altar the needs of the entire world." St. Paul of the Cross A saint is not someone who never sins, but one who sins less and less frequently and gets up more and more quickly. Bernard of Clairvaux The greatest deception, and the deepest source of unhappiness, is the illusion of finding life by excluding God, of finding freedom by excluding moral truths and personal responsibility. 6 Assumption Church Sanctuary. If interested please call Judy at or Joanne at traditionally Christian nations where it seems that the light of the Gospel has grown dim and souls are struggling in the obscurity of ignorance Then, how valuable your work becomes as your persevere with the same effort a little longer, a few minutes more, until the job is finished! In a simple and practical way you are converting contemplation into apostolate, seeing it as an imperative necessity of your heart, which beats in unison with the most sweet and merciful Heart of Jesus, Our Lord. Friends of God, 67 Lent In our present liturgy for Ash Wednesday, we use ashes made from the burned palm branches distributed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. The priest blesses the ashes and imposes them on the foreheads of the faithful, making the sign of the cross and saying, "Remember, man you are dust and to dust you shall return," or "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel." As we begin this holy season of Lent in preparation for Easter, we must remember the significance of the ashes we have received: We mourn and do penance for our sins. We again convert our hearts to the Lord, who suffered, died, and rose for our salvation. We renew the promises made at our baptism, when we died to an old life and rose to a new life with Christ. Finally, mindful that the kingdom of this world passes away, we strive to live the kingdom of God now and look forward to its fulfillment in heaven. Working for God (St. Josemaría Escrivá) Rest assured that it is not difficult to convert work into a prayerful dialogue. As soon as you offer it up and then set to work, God is already listening and giving encouragement. We acquire the style of contemplative souls, in the midst of our daily work! Because we become certain that He is watching us, while He asks us to conquer ourselves anew: a little sacrifice here, a smile there for someone who bothers us, beginning the least pleasant but most urgent job first, carefulness in little details of order, perseverance in the fulfillment of our duty when it would be so easy to abandon it, not leaving for tomorrow what should be finished today: and all this, to please Him, our Father God! On your desk or in some inconspicuous place that nobody notices, you perhaps place your crucifix to awaken in you a contemplative spirit and to act as a textbook for your mind and soul where you learn the lessons of service. If you make up your mind to follow these ways of contemplation, in the midst of your ordinary work, without doing anything odd or withdrawing from the world, you will immediately feel that you are a friend of the Master, with the God-given task of opening up the divine ways of the earth to the whole of mankind. Yes. With your work you will help to spread Christ s kingdom in every continent. You will offer up hour after hour of work for far-off lands which are being born to the faith, for the peoples of the East who are being cruelly forbidden to profess their faith, and for the
