2 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, my name is Deacon Sal Mazzella. I was ordained by Cardinal Egan June 7, My first assignment was at The Church of Our Lady of Grace in the Bronx which has subsequently been merged into Church of Saint Frances of Rome. I want to share with you a little story. This took place at a church in the South Bronx in the early 1960s. At that time the altar was built into the wall of the church, Mass was celebrated in Latin and the priest celebrated the Mass with his back to the people. All of the boys at a local elementary school wanted to become altar servers if for no one her reason than to get out of class for a while during funeral Masses. There was a boy who also wanted to serve at the altar but he couldn t even though he knew his prayers in Latin, you see he had had polio as a child and was not able to get up and down the stairs at the front of the altar. Disappointed, as he was, there was no way for him to serve at the altar. His mother used to pray to Jesus that if her son had two good legs he would also be serving the Lord at the altar. Time passed and life went on but God hears the cry of the poor and on June 7, 2008 the little boy now a grown man who was unable to serve as an altar boy was ordained a deacon and has now been assigned to St. Barnabas. That little boy was me! I am sharing the story with you not because it is about me but it is about our loving and merciful God. God hears all our prayers sometimes he just wants us to wait because His plans for us a far greater than anything we can ever plan or even imagine for ourselves. All I wanted was to be an altar boy but instead God said wait and here I am as your deacon. There are times when all of us feel down and disappointed and we don t know what s going to happen next. That is the time to have the greatest faith. As Padre Pio used to say pray, hope and don t worry, worry is useless God is merciful and He will hear your prayer. Have faith and trust in God I assure you that if you do, you will join me as I joined our Blessed Mother in her Magnificat when she said the almighty has done great things for me and holy is His name. Along with all the clergy here at Saint Barnabas I look forward to serving you and praising God with you. Thank you for the warm welcome you have given to me and to my parents. May the peace of Christ which is beyond all understanding be with you and your families always. The Woodlawn Taxpayers Association will meet at 7:30pm on Monday April 8th in the Saint Barnabas Elementary School cafeteria. The featured speaker will be Mr. Sean MacLean, Program Director for the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign at the American Red Cross. Mr. MacLean will discuss the new law requiring smoke detectors with 10 year lithium batteries and he will be signing up home owners and tenants that would like the American Red Cross to come to their residence to install these new smoke detectors for free! Our elected representatives will also be present to hear your concerns. We hope you will attend and bring a neighbor. Congratulations to our longtime parishioner Mr. Tom Murray who was recently inducted into Cardinal Hayes High School Hall of Fame. Tom coached at the High School for over 40 years and has left an amazing legacy. Congratulations Tom!!
