4 A word from Fr Peter Simmons Hi all, and Happy New Year. How many of us made New Year resolutions, saying is year was e year to achieve e ings we didn t do last year? Could be taking a trip interstate, or maybe overseas, or it might be to down-size and move into a retirement village. Or is it at I am going to buy a new car? All ese ings are important but ey are materialistic and somewhat not necessary for our daily life and wellbeing. Life is a time for learning and experiencing e gifts at God has given to each one of us. We are told in e Bible at we are in e likeness of God but we are all individuals and have our own oughts and ways of doing ings. So is means we can learn from oers and oers can learn from what we do. This year I would ask at you consider starting anew wi each oer and also look at growing in your Christian journey. Like all ings it takes a commitment. The question now is, am I prepared to make a commitment to God? One way to look at it is, when I was baptized did I personally make a commitment to God or was it my parents and Godparents making at commitment? And en when I came for Confirmation, did I take upon myself e promises made by my parents and Godparents or did I go along wi e flow because it was e done ing to do at e time? So I am asking as we start is New Year at we individually in our own time make a new commitment to our Christian Fai. There are a number of ways in which you can share your fai wi oers. It might be by joining e Lenten study at happens is mon. Or become involved in many of e activities at e Church offers. Or maybe at you might like to start a new group. If we look at e early Church, ey met togeer, shared food togeer, prayed togeer, shared eir resources one wi anoer, helped e less fortunate. The one ing ey didn t do was just sit and do noing and ponder e past. They were people of e future experiencing life and helping wherever ey could. We are people of e future. We have to grow in our fai and share it wi oers. So let s stop talking about what we are gunna do and let us take at step and commit to taking a step in fai. Peter Families Equip is providing a Facilitator Training Course 7 pm 9.30 pm Friday 20 April & 9 am 5 pm Saturday 21 st April at e Mount Barker Parish Centre 40 Hutchinson Street, Mount Barker Enquiries: Liz Hampel No cost. Sue News from St Ann s, Aldinga Our first Friends of St Ann s meeting for e year was well attended. It is good to know at so many people are interested in what is happening at St Ann s and in discussing improvements. Once again e need to replace e pews wi chairs was discussed, wi ideas on what will be suitable, as was e need to replace e old tired shed wi someing better suited to our increased need for storage. Sadly we have had to say goodbye to our dear friend and parishioner Michael (Mike) Binns who passed away recently (see below). Mike was one of several who was instrumental in helping in e building of e hall and in assisting at e many fundraising activities rough e years which have helped St Ann s enjoy its current status today. A full church of family and friends last Thursday joined in celebrating his life wi a service in his honour. This was followed by a sumptuous wake catered for by St Ann s ladies and held on e family property nearby. Our heartfelt sorrow for Mike s passing goes to Eileen, Graham, Alan and families from us all. Australia Day was celebrated on Friday 26 wi our monly shared Family Tea. Once again it was a happy and relaxed affair wi twenty-ree people coming along. It was lovely to see several of our newer members joining in wi us. Our next Family Tea will be on Friday 23rd February, 6.30 for 7 pm. Bring your friends! A team of interested people are planning a book sale (see below). You may like to come along and snare a bargain or two! Pat Roper, Warden Mike Binns R I P We have been saddened by e dea of Mike Binns, a well-known and much loved Aldinga Personality, and husband of Eileen Binns. He was a practical man, and was part of e team at built St Ann s Room. Generous wi his time, he assisted wi electrical matters, and e setting up for St Ann s jumble sales. On Family Tea nights he could be found in his favourite men s corner of e room. Born in Leeds, Mike was proudly Yorkshire, and as his coffin left e church e strains of e Anem of Yorkshire, On Ilkla Moor baht at rang out. 5 Big Book Sale! If you would like help wi transport to is service, contact Trish Fri CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY Sunday 4 March In 1989 an average Australian bloke had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard - Sydney Harbour. This simple idea has now become e nation's largest communitybased environmental event, Clean Up Australia Day, which demonstrates at people across Australia are willing to do someing to help protect and care for our environment. For e past two years St Ann s has registered to take part, and been given an area on Old Coach Road to clean up. So it s working cloes day at St Ann s on e 4 March, for e clean-up after church, and who knows ere may be e traditional sausage sizzle as a reward afterwards! Join e St Ann s team on Sunday 4, or register on e Clean Up Site website cleanupaustraliaday.org.au for anoer area. News from St Stephen s, Willunga Thank you to Fr Simon for celebrating over recent weeks. Saturday Night Out Dinner was held on Saturday, January 15 at e Old Bush Inn. It was a splendid evening and good food. Also a useful occasion for outreach as we ate in e main dining room. Next Saturday Night Out will be on February 10 at e Old Bush Inn following e 5.30 Vigil Mass. (Bookings: Ted ) We continue to discuss a stall at e front of St Stephen's on a Saturday morning to take into account e people who walk past or park in e grounds to attend e Willunga Farmers Market. We are open to suggestions of e type of stall. The church was open on Saturday January 20 while preparations were made for e Saturday Service, and ree groups of visitors called in during e morning including relatives of e Hill family. This family had donated e land for our St Stephen s church and ere is a stained glass memorial window to e family on e nor side of e church. Fr Dennis officiated at e funeral for e late Janyce Buick on 5 January. Janyce was a former parishioner and so some 140 people crowded into e church. The funeral procession was led down e aisle and from e church by a Scottish piper, and e entourage proceeded down St Andrews Tce and Main Rd to e Alma Hotel for refreshments, while e hearse continued on for e cremation. The Vigil Eucharist is held on a Saturday at 5.30 pm: if at any time you are unable to attend a Sunday Service you will be most welcome at St Stephen's. Refreshments are provided after e service; wi choice of bubbly or wine & nibbles (cheese, biscuits and dips). John Strachan & Ted Sandercock, Wardens Oh, my poor china! A sad story from Susan Smi At around 9.00 a.m. on e 6 of January, in e middle of at really hot spell, Bob and I heard an almighty crash! We raced around e house to see what it was. Our glass display cabinet must have buckled in e intense heat, and all my sets of antique cups, saucers and plates had come crashing down and got smashed, apart from e odd saucer or plate. One set miraculously escaped e carnage intact ( see pic ) as well as two Dickens figurines, a Royal Doulton lady, and a teeny cup and saucer, all of which are very special to me. I was deeply upset by is, and if anyone has any sets ey no longer want, I would be very grateful. 6

10 Hot news from St Margaret s, McLaren Vale We have sizzled a bit during January and e ick old stone walls of St Margaret s building absorb plenty of heat, making a very nice oven if you're a loaf of uncooked bread... However, is state of affairs hasn't deterred worshippers from turning up and it has been encouraging to welcome new visitors as well as regulars to various forms of service from diligent priests and laypeople. It's been great to see Jean Griffin return and we ank ose who collect oer parishioners who oerwise would be unable to attend. If you would like to come to church, but are unable to get ere under your own steam, please contact Fr Simon or wardens and we can arrange transport. Last Sunday was a Prayer Praise and Proclamation lay-run service, well attended, devout and smooly run. Sincere anks to Greg John who once again presented a clear and beautifully illustrated power point order of service as well as giving a ought provoking homily and inspiring hymns...all very much appreciated. Thanks again to Jac Hocking for her tasty tokens to take home, or eat on e way home. Not only do ese tokens sustain us spiritually, but physically as well is time! Gummy sharks (R) take on a whole new perspective! Thanks also to Judi Wells for keeping us focused on e tasks in hand during e service. Guild Friends is now holding less formal and shorter meetings after Sunday services so issues can be tackled in smaller doses and at more convenient times for e congregation. This also means more people can participate and contribute. This is being trialled for now and will be assessed for its effectiveness at a later date. Julia Drought has stepped into e Warden s position for now as Greg Roberts has stood down. Greg will continue his valuable work visiting housebound parishioners and tackling practical issues as ey arise. Thank you Greg for your past and continuing contributions. It is hoped at we may be able to share a meal wi e local back-packers hostel at McLaren Vale. More on is later. Fr. Simon and Susie have definitely settled into e rectory now and we wish Susie well in her new job at Tatachilla Lueran College. If you donated cutlery or oer bits and pieces to help set up e rectory in e past, ese items are no longer required. They are on display in St Margaret's Sunday-school room if you wish to collect em. If you do not wish to take ese items, ey will be sold at our car boot sale, coming up in March. If you have any oer items you'd like to sell or donate to e car boot sale, please contact Greg and Helen Roberts for furer details. The large shed has been cleared to enable cars to be parked under shelter, so please be mindful of private areas. Please keep our sick and infirm in your prayers...leonie and Greg Pettman bo need prayers at is time and also Jill Ribbons. God s healing blessings to you all. We do list names of e sick and any who need prayer on e back of e pew sheet. This needs to be updated often. If you see a name which, for whatever reason, needs to be deleted, please tell a warden so we keep current needs. Conversely, please tell us if a name has been wrongfully removed or you wish to add names. Full names are not necessary. God Saturday 24 March knows who we are and all our needs.
