Refreshments provided. from THE CROWN OF THE YEAR Weekly Paragraphs for the Holy Sacrament By Austin Farrer Dacre Press, Westminster TRINITY xv CHRIST gives himself to you under the signs of bread and wine. The food is assimilated, it loses its own nature and takes on yours. So with the life of Christ bestowed on you: it takes on the forms of your life and action, not (at first sight) the forms of Christ s. Men nourished on the life of Christ are more fully themselves for the gift; their personal quality is stronger, freer, more characteristic. Christ s self-giving is self-effacing, he does not impose himself, he studies his disciples. But with what effect? Not that he is moulded to them, but that they are moulded to him. The strongest influence is exercised by the man who gives himself entirely away and does not think of himself. So it is with the love of God. He becomes as we, that he may make us as himself.

5 SEPTEMBER 14 th HOLY CROSS DAY. According to legends that spread widely, the True Cross was discovered in 326 by Saint Helena, the Christian mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, during a pilgrimage she made to Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built at the site of the discovery, by order of Helena and Constantine. The church was dedicated nine years later, with a portion of the cross placed inside it. In her pilgrimage to rediscover the holy sites in Palestine and by her lifting up the Cross, for veneration, Helena recalled the church to the tangible reality of love, incarnate, made flesh, in Christ who was born, died and rose again for us. In this space and time, in this particular place. SEPTEMBER 16 th 18 th 19 th S. In the liturgical calendar of the Western Christian churches, Ember days are four separate sets of three days within the same week ) specifically, the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday ) roughly equidistant in the circuit of the year, set aside for fasting and prayer, especially suitable for the ordination of clergy. The Ember Days are known in Latin as the quattuor anni tempora (the four seasons of the year ), or formerly as the jejunia quattuor temporum ( fasts of the four seasons ). SEPTEMBER 16 th NINIAN, MISSIONARY AND BISHOP, (4th-5th century) is a Christian saint first mentioned in the 8th century as being an early missionary among the Pictish peoples of which is now Scotland. For this reason, he is known as the Apostle to the Southern Picts, and there are numerous dedications to him in those parts of Scotland with a Pictish heritage, throughout the Scottish Lowlands, and in parts of Northern England with a Northumbrian heritage. In Scotland, Ninian is also known as Ringan, and as Trynnian in Northern England. Bede says that Ninian (whose name he only renders in the ablative case Nynia) was a Briton who had been instructed in Rome; that he made his church of stone, which was unusual among the Britons; that his episcopal see was named after Saint Martin of Tours; that he preached to and converted the southern Picts; that his base was in a place called Ad Candidam Casam, which was in the province of the Bernicians; and that he was buried there, along with many other saints. Bede s information is minimal and he does not claim it as fact, asserting only that he is passing on traditional information. He provides the first historical reference to Saint Ninian, in a passing reference contained in the final part of a single paragraph. SEPTEMBER 19 th THEODORE OF TARSUS, ARCHBISHOP ( September 690); sometimes known as Theodore of Tarsus or Theodore of Canterbury) was the eighth Archbishop of Canterbury, best known for his reform of the English Church and establishment of a school in Canterbury. Theodore was of Byzantine Greek descent, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, a Greek-speaking diocese of the Byzantine Empire. Theodore s childhood saw devastating wars between Byzantium and the Persian Sassanid Empire, which resulted in the capture of Antioch, Damascus, and Jerusalem in Persian forces captured Tarsus when Theodore was 11 or 12 years old, and evidence exists that Theodore had experience of Persian culture. It is most likely that he studied at Antioch, the historic home of a distinctive school of exergesis, of which he was a proponent. Theodore also knew Syrian culture, language and literature, and may even has travelled to Edessa. Though a Greek could live under Persian rule, the Muslim conquests which reached Tarsus in 637, certainly drove Theodore from Tarsus; if he did not flee earlier, Theodore would have been 35 years old when he left his birthplace. Having returned to the Eastern Roman Empire, he studied in the Byzantine capital of Constantinople, including the subjects of astronomy, ecclesiastical computes, astrology, medicine, Roman Civil law, Greek rhetoric and philosophy, and the use of the horoscope. At some time before the 660's, Theodore had travelled west to Rome, where he lived with a community of Eastern monks. At this time, in addition to his already profound Greek intellectual inheritance, he became learned in Latin literature, both sacred and secular. When Theodore was 66, the see of Canterbury happened to fall vacant. Theodore was consecrated archbishop of Canterbury in Rome on 26 March 668, and sent to England with Hadrian, arriving on 27 May 669. Theodore conducted a survey of the English church, appointed various bishops to sees that had lain vacant for some time, and then called the Synod of Hertford (673) to institute reforms concerning the proper celebration of Easter, episcopal authority, itinerant monks, the regular convening of subsequent synods, marriage and prohibitions of consanguinity and other matters. He helped establish a school in Canterbury, providing instruction in both Greek and Latin, resulting in a golden age of Anglo-Saxon scholarship. Theodore died in 690 at the remarkable age of 88, having held the archbishopric for twenty-two years, and was buried in Canterbury at Saint Peter s Church.
