4 FINANCIAL UPDATE As we draw close to the end of another calendar year, I would like to encourage all Parishioners to take this opportunity to add a little something extra to your offerings for the next few weeks. Double up on a weekly offering, add 20% per week, or make up for those weeks when we were lounging at the cottage you choose the method that works for you. This year, like most it seems, we will need a heroic effort by all parishioners and friends of St. Peter s to balance our books at year end. As of Nov 23, envelope offerings for the year-to-date are about $8000 behind where we were last year at this time. Our annual envelope offerings budget is $177,000 and we will need to raise over $50,000 between now and year end to balance our current account. This may sound daunting, but in fact with generous support from each of you, we achieved the same goal in December of Let s do it again! Our Cathedral 150 Capital Campaign has had a goal of $50,000 for Currently, we have raised $36,857 for the year, so contributions in this area are also welcome. You will recall that our Cathedral 150 Campaign is dedicated to eliminating our long term debt, carrying out interior renovations to All Souls Chapel, and completing interior renovations to the Rectory, all by St Peter s has had a very successful transitional year: Fr David s first anniversary, Ruth Ann Read-Clay as our new organist, a vibrant array of liturgical and parish family activities, a major renovation at the Rectory, and a revitalization of our Refugee Program. We have much to be thankful for. At the same time, the reality of our aging Parish (and Canadian) population is having an effect on weekly and annual revenue. Let s face it - we have lost some very faithful, dedication - and generous - parishioners over the past few years. While there are efforts at a number of levels within the Cathedral to attract new and lapsed parishioners to our parish family, this is an ongoing effort for all of us. In the meantime, we all must do what we can within our means to fill the financial gap left by those who are no longer with us. One only needs look around us and around the world to see how important the work of the church is in guiding society s values and nurturing our individual spiritual growth. Rory Francis Treasury Warden DECEMBER 28th THE INNOCENTS. Herod ordered the execution of all young male children in the vicinity of Bethlehem so as to avoid the loss of his throne to a newborn King of the Jews whose birth had been announced to him by the Magi. In a way that is typical in Matthew s Gospel, it is understood as the fulfilment of an Old Testament prophecy: Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because her children are no more. The scriptures do not justify or explain such evil, except to acknowledge it and to say that God s goodness exists nevertheless. DECEMBER 29th THOMAS BECKETT 21 December 1118 (or 1120) - 29 December 1170) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in He engaged in conflict with Henry II of England over the rights and privileges of the Church and was murdered by followers of the king in Canterbury Cathedral. DECEMBER 30th JOHN WYCLIFFE c December 1384 (1) was an English scholastic philosopher, theologian, lay preacher, translator, reformer and university teacher at Oxford in England. He was an influential dissident in the Church during the 14th century. In his preaching he advocated for wider learning, individual conscience, and personal holiness. A precursor to the Protestant Reformation, he has been characterized as the evening star of scholasticism and the Morning Star of the Reformation. He was an opponent of papal authority over secular power. Wycliffe was also an early advocate for translation of the Bible into the common language. He completed his translation directly from the Vulgate into vernacular English in the year 1382, now known as Wycliffe s Bible. DECEMBER 31st JOHN WEST was a Church of England missionary, teacher, and author; b. November 1778 in Farnham, Surrey, England, d. 21 December 1845 in Chettle, England. He served as the first Protestant Clergyman in Rupertsland in Western Canada. JANUARY 1st THE CIRCUMCISION OF CHRIST, which occurred in accordance with Jewish tradition, eight days after his birth was the occasion on which he was formally given his name, Jesus. The name Jesus used in the English New Testament comes from the Hebrew, Joshua, meaning Saviour.

5 Post Communion Hymn 1. The first Nowell the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, On a cold winter s night that was so deep: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell 2. They lookèd up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far: And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, 3. Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord, That hath made heaven and earth of naught, And with is blood mankind hath bought: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,
