At the conclusion of the Gospel: Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.. MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION HOMILY PROFESSION OF FAITH Please Stand I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, All bow while saying: and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. Perhaps this is a nod to the demographics that show mainline protestant denominations on the wane, with a corresponding uptick in evangelical Christians. Or perhaps people have simply tried to define themselves by what they believe, rather than in what they do not believe. Recall, the term protestant denotes those ecclesial communions formed as a result of the Reformation, those who in various ways protested the Catholic Church teaching on any number of issues. Conversely, I have frequently encountered those who self-identify as former Catholics, or recovering Catholics, or simply indicate I was raised Catholic. Since 1964, the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (henceforth CARA) out of Georgetown niversity, has done some amazing statistical analysis on a wide range of church-related issues and their methodology is sound. Their studies routinely provide solid food for thought, though they are not always easy to digest. (Sorry, I couldn t help it!) When people self-identify as former Catholics, that signals to me a few clues. Perhaps they have some residual anger, while maintaining some semblance of identification (however wounded or weak). Or, maybe they simply never joined another place of worship. CARA s recent study of 3,000 adult Catholics helped me to put some flesh to my long-time hunch. It revealed that about two-thirds of people raised Catholic remain Catholic as adults (67%). Among those who remain Catholic, 49% attend Mass at least once a month. Those born before 1943 are the most likely to have stayed Catholic (82% retention) and today exhibit the highest frequencies of Mass attendance (63% at least monthly). Researchers conclude that these two statistics alone enable them to help shape a conceptual map of Catholicism in terms of being able to see both its core and its periphery. Of those surveyed who no longer identify as Catholic, 16% joined some protestant Christian denomination, 15% have no affiliation at all (the nones ), while 3% joined some other religious affiliation. In other words, fewer than half who left remained practicing Christians. I suspect former Catholic conveys more than saying I no longer have a religious affiliation. In a strange way, the word Catholic is still part of their ethos. Pope Francis has directed the Church to look to the peripheries, and to me, this is a perfect example. It is not merely the economic peripheries to which we have been called. Of those who remain Catholic, 25% attend Mass weekly, 24% attend between 1 and 3 times per month, 29% attend at least once a year, and 22% attend less than once per year. (I might have included some options between once per month and once per year.) Generally speaking the higher the level of education, the more often those Catholics attend Mass on a weekly basis, a fact I found most intriguing. The stark difference between those with a Bachelor s Degree (31%) and those with a high school diploma (19%) bears this out. But here is what confused me retention is highest among those whose educational level includes a high school diploma or less. More than 70% of them have remained staying Catholic. Still, fewer than half from that group attends Mass at least once a month. So they stayed but do not participate very actively. Even more troubling is this final statistic: those born pre-1943 attend weekly Mass at a rate of 48%, while only 15% of millennials (born 1982 or later) attend Mass weekly.

5 How does this bode for the future? I know what the pessimist in me says, but what about the hopeful and engaged priest part of me what do I say? For one thing, these sobering statistics highlight all the more why we need events such as Theology on Tap, a social and educational offering specifically geared to the young adult segment of the Church. Rather than standing at the door waiting for people to come, we need to go out to meet them, and this program works, plain and simple. It is hardly a panacea for all things, but it is step in the right direction. But we also have to ask some difficult questions. Why do people leave the faith? How do we engage them? How do we engage the faithful within the context of a Sunday Mass, when people of all ages are attending? Would it make sense to preach a homily at Sunday 10:00 a.m. Mass in the same way I would preach at a high school youth retreat? I have raised many more questions than I have answered and it will take some time for me to digest these trends. But the facts are there for those who seek to ponder how we can more effectively keep people engaged in the faith, while remaining true to our duty to share the fullness of the truth in love. In a society clamoring for fewer absolutes and a media all too willing to paint a picture of people of conviction as hopelessly out of touch, we in the Church have our work cut out for us. But it is a challenge I try to accept each and every day. Game on! I too shuddered when I saw the video of the four-year old boy who had slipped under a railing, through wires and over a wall before falling feet into a moat in the gorilla s enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo. While everyone would have hoped the animal could have been saved, who would have waited the 5-10 minutes needed for a tranquilizer dart to take effect, hoping that an agitated silverback would not lash out at child in the meantime? Zoo officials responded in the only truly responsible way possible given the circumstances. Caught up in the ordination festivities, I neglected to note in last Sunday s Bulletin, the 100 th anniversary of James J. Hill s death. He was truly an Empire Builder, responsible for more than 6000 miles of railroad. Measured in today s dollars, he was the equivalent of a billionaire, though he was extremely generous to charity, including this Archdiocese! I am not typically given to hyperbole, but I cannot ever recall seeing so much road construction as this summer. It is challenge getting just about anywhere in this town! This summer s projects are affecting more people than is typical. Thankfully, I can walk down the 178 steps near the James J. Hill House to visit someone in nited Hospital or to frequent some great restaurants, etc. Even Noah needed only two of everything. Our rectory yard is a veritable Eastern cottontail habitat. Don t believe it? Stop by some evening around dusk, and you ll see a handful of bunnies and as many adults. This also explains the chicken wire protecting our flowers. Let s just say I don t foresee any barefoot strolls through the yard this summer! Wow 19 Bucks for a tour of.s. Bank Stadium, the new home of the Minnesota Vikings? Didn t taxpayers already kick in $500 million? Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John L. bel, Rector CATHEDRAL CALENDAR Sunday, June 5 - Coffee and Donut Sunday Coffee & Donuts after 8:00 & 10:00 a.m. Masses in Hayden Hall 9:00 a.m. Calix Society Breakfast Meeting - Assembly Room 11:15 a.m. Rosary for Life - Cana Chapel 11:15 a.m. Blessing of Expectant Mothers - Chapel of the Blessed Virgin 6:00 p.m. Rosary for Life - Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Monday, June 6 Tuesday, June 7 Wednesday, June 8 7:00 p.m. Introducing Catholicism - Ryan Room 7:00 p.m. CYA Service Event - Dorothy Day Center Thursday, June 9 Friday, June 10 3:00 p.m. Divine Mercy Chaplet - Cana Chapel 6:00 p.m. CYA - Outdoor Sports Night - Eagan Saturday, June 11 - No Special Events Page 5 Sunday, June 12 11:15 a.m. Rosary for Life - Cana Chapel 6:00 p.m. Rosary for Life - Chapel of the Blessed Virgin REGORGANIZATION PLAN FILING The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis filed its Plan for Reorganization in.s. Bankruptcy Court just over a week ago. It is a major step in the Archdiocese s commitment to protect children, establish a counseling fund for victims, and create a trust for those who have been harmed by people in the Church. On our website/in the back of the church there is a letter from the Archbishop regarding the Plan filing and a twopage Q and A that should be helpful in explaining why the Archdiocese filed Chapter 11 in January of 2015, where the process is now, and what happens going forward. It also addresses recent allegations that the Archdiocese failed to disclose all of its assets. Please continue to pray for all of those who have been harmed by the Church over the years and for their families.

7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES The thoughts of His Heart for all generations... In April, 1931, Maginnis and Walsh wrote to Msgr. Lawrence Ryan, We are terribly disappointed at the news that you can proceed with only the Sacred Heart Chapel. They were not alone. Archbishop John Murray s decision to stop work on the interior of the Cathedral was a difficult one. But the cause was beyond his control: the Crash of 1929 drove the country into the Great Depression. The Archbishop was determined to conserve resources so that he could help those in need in the parish and in the larger community. Mosaics planned for the space behind the Sacred Heart statue and the ceiling were cancelled. Marble and a painted coffered ceiling were substituted. But early in 1931, economic conditions created an opportunity for the purchase of some of the rarest marble in the Cathedral: Numidian Crimson marble, Rojo Alcante, and Red onyx from Morocco. The marble was purchased for a fraction of the original price. Due to the economic crisis, there was an enormous overload of foreign stone sitting idle on New York docks. In the end, the variations of marble in the Sacred Heart Chapel presented sharply contrasting colors intensified by the green Tinos floor from Greece. The rail of light Botticino with posts of Portora Black, carved from remnants of the Portora columns in the sanctuary, provided another contrast. Against this background, the statue of the Sacred Heart was placed in 1933, to complete the fourth chapel in the Cathedral. The Catholic Bulletin for July that year, called Sydney Woolett s heroic marble statue... a magnificent figure, the Divine Savior issuing His invitation to mankind, Come to me, all ye who labor, and I will give you rest. The message was not lost on those who struggled during those difficult years. Msgr. Lawrence Ryan saw another meaning: The symbol of the loving heart, enshrined in this majestic setting may be seen as two-edged: the funds for the chapel were raised by popular subscription, but at a time when Minnesotans had very little. Excerpts from An Architectural Biography, by Eric Hansen and The History of the Cathedral, by Msgr. Lawrence Ryan. Note: June is traditionally the month of the Sacred Heart, with the feast of the Sacred Heart celebrated on the first Friday in June, this year on June 3. ACSP. THE CATHEDRAL PARISH/175 Help Wanted. Now is the time for all parishioners to come to the aid of their parish. Taking a note from Patrick Henry, we post a request for volunteers to help the Parish/175 committee plan and mount the history of the Cathedral parish in Hayden Hall and the museum. The exhibit traces the history of the Cathedral parish from our first parish church, the log cabin Chapel of Saint Paul to the present. It will show the history of the pastors and people who were and are the Cathedral Parish and the Cathedral Parish School. The exhibit will show the history of parish groups more than sixty that have served the parish and the community. To tell this 175-year -old story, we need help: 1) Typists: we can use your skill in work that you can do at home, 2) Photos: we need photos of parishioners involved in parish activities. 3) Exhibit assistants: help with mounting photos and artifacts in Hayden Hall and the Cathedral museum.
