5 aint Nektarius was born in Selyvria of Thrace on October 1, After putting himself through school in Constantinople with much hard labour, he became a monk on Chios in 1876, receiving the monastic name of Lazarus; because of his virtue, a year later he was ordained deacon, receiving the new name of Nektarius. Under the patronage of Patriarch Sophronius of Alexandria, Nektarius went to Athens to study in 1882; completing his theological studies in 1885, he went to Alexandria, where Patriarch Sophronius ordained him priest on March 23, 1886 in the Cathedral of Saint Sabbas, and in August of the same year, in the Church of Saint Nicholas in Cairo, made him Archimandrite. Archimandrite Nektarius showed much zeal both for preaching the word of God, and for the beauty of God s house. He greatly beautified the Church of Saint Nicholas in Cairo, and years later, when Nektarius was in Athens, Saint Nicholas appeared to him in a dream, embracing him and telling him he was going to exalt him very high. On January 15, 1889, in the same Church of Saint Nicholas, Nektarius was consecrated Metropolitan of the Pentapolis in eastern Libya, which was under the jurisdiction of Alexandria. Although Nektarius swift ascent through the degrees of ecclesiastical office did not affect his modesty and childlike innocence, it aroused the envy of lesser men, who convinced the elderly Sophronius that Nektarius had it in his heart to become Patriarch. Since the people loved Nektarius, the Patriarch was troubled by the slanders. On May 3, 1890, Sophronius relieved Metropolitan Nektarius of his duties; in July of the same year, November 2017 Nektarius the Wonderworker, Metropolitan of Pentapolis November 9 he commanded Nektarius to leave Egypt. Without seeking to avenge or even to defend himself, the innocent Metropolitan left for Athens, where he found that accusations of immorality had arrived before him. Because his good name had been soiled, he was unable to find a position worthy of a bishop, and in February of 1891 accepted the position of provincial preacher in Euboia; then, in 1894, he was appointed dean of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School in Athens. Through his eloquent sermons his unwearying labours to educate fitting men for the priesthood, his generous alms deeds despite his own poverty, and the holiness, meekness, and fatherly love that were manifest in him, he became a shining light and a spiritual guide to many. At the continued on pg. 6 5

6 6 St Nektarius from pg. 5 request of certain pious women, in 1904 he began the building of his convent of the Holy Trinity on the island of Aegina while yet dean of the Rizarios School; finding later that his presence there was needed, he took up his residence on Aegina in 1908, where he spent the last years of his life, devoting himself to the direction of his convent and to very intense prayer; he was sometimes seen lifted above the ground while rapt in prayer. He became the protector of all Aegina, through his prayers delivering the island from drought, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Here also he endured wicked slanders with singular patience, forgiving his false accusers and not seeking to avenge himself. Although he had already worked wonders in life, an innumerable multitude of miracles have been wrought after his repose in 1920 through his holy relics, which for many years remained incorrupt. There is hardly a malady that has not been cured through his prayers; but Saint Nektarius is especially renowned for his healings of cancer for sufferers in all parts of the world. Yet as Alexandria described the program my interest was piqued. I decided that I would exercise my due diligence in applying and if God wanted me to walk through that door I prayed that He would open it for me. As it turns out, the door opened wide so I then stepped through its threshold into the unknown. I could not argue against it. Antiochian House of Studies (AHOS) runs four distinct theological programs with Pastoral Counseling being one of them. The following is an excerpt from their website: For more than thirty years, the House of Studies has been a school without walls, offering people throughout the world an empowering and enlightening graduate education. Due to its unique character as a distance-learning institution, the House of Studies fills an invaluable niche in today s educational milieu. The House of Studies is physically headquartered in Pennsylvania under the leadership of the Orthodox Church. We service Christians from all walks of life. Past and current students have included people from the Eastern, Coptic, and Oriental Orthodox traditions; Roman and Eastern Catholics; and students from a variety of Protestant denominations. 9 s the first to be called by Jesus Christ into his service, St. Andrew commands a reverence a degree greater than those who have followed. For this reason, St. Andrew is called Protokletos, or First-called. St. Andrew, like his brother St. Peter, was a fisherman, a toiler with net and boat recognized in the Psalms of the Old Testament as one of those who go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; these see the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep. His love of the sea stemmed from his love of the Creator who made it, and the perils of the sea which he challenged daily forged the character with which he boldly assailed the seas of ignorance and paganism in the sacred trust that had been placed in his keeping. St. Andrew November 30 November 2017 St. Andrew, who lived in the Holy Land in the ancient city of Bethsaida, accepted Christ with all his heart and after a discipleship with St. John the Baptist went forth to become one of the greatest missionaries in all history. When the apostles drew lots to determine their sphere of labour for the Saviour, St. Andrew exulted in his mission to preach in Asia Minor, part of Greece, and an area along the coast of the Black Sea, including its gateway, the city now known as Istanbul, or Constantinople. Wherever St. Andrew went he attracted throngs of people who thirsted for a spiritual knowledge. His message of deliverance was so eloquently convincing, even to hostile minds, that he is credited with having converted countless thousands to Christianity in a day when mass media did not exist. As an apostle, his only tools were his power of oratory and continued pg. 10 When I Grow up continued from pg. 8 for the various programs the school offers. Antiochian Village is perched in a bucolic setting that naturally creates an oasis from a hectic life. Although the program is rigorous, the rhythm of the day, the attitude of prayer, the experience of worship, and the sharing of faith within a rich learning environment evokes a feeling of balance and calm not often experienced in everyday life. Well, not mine anyway. It is unclear how this new vocation will unfold, for me and for others, but I hope and pray that by being obedient to this call, God will use me as He sees fit. I am grateful for this opportunity and ask for your prayers and support. I also ask that God will guide me according to His will throughout this journey to the glory of His name! 9

Markella said she hadn t taught Demetri too much on golf technique, but she focused 10 and the other apostles, some of whom he had not yet met. There he rejoiced in joining the great St. Peter together with those but for whom Christianity might never have become the glorious human experience it is today. Out of the Synod, the apostles went forth with renewed vigour to establish the ecclesiastical system. St. Andrew alone is credited with having set up parishes throughout Asia Minor, in Pontos, Bithynia, Thrace, Macedonia, Greece, Scythia (Russia, where he is still regarded as patron saint) and in the capital city of Byzantium. It was in Byzantium that St. Andrew ordained Stachys as first bishop of Byzantium (later Constantinople), thereby establishing an unbroken line of 270 patriarchs down to the present day Patriarch Bartholomeos 1st. From continued on pg. 11 «It s nice to have that support,» Demetri said. «When you have bad day when you are playing with her, she brings you back up.» Demetri also said he hopes he offers Markella support when she is having a bad day on the course. That support that Demetri speaks of is something that has been passed down from one Gammaitoni sibling to another, as they are the third and fourth Gammaitoni to be a part of the St. Dom s golf team. Older brothers Manoli (graduated in 2015) and Nicholas (graduated in 2016) passed their knowledge down to Markella. Probably that there s always going to be more golf to play, that you shouldn t (be down) on yourself on the bad strokes,» more on the mental side of the game of her younger brother. I mean, he s a pretty strong golfer, so, as far as golf goes, I haven t taught him much,» Markella said. «I think I have taught him to focus more because he can stray away from golf focus and forgetting the bad shots.» While they offer each other support, there s still that sibling rivalry there as they have been mostly the Saints No. 1 and No. 2 golfers this season, helping to lead continued on pg. 11

11 November 2017 St. Andrew from pg. 10 Byzantium, St. Andrew went on to more glory through his compelling oratory and power of healing through Jesus Christ. He eventually found himself in Achaia, in the city of Patras, where he was to suffer death. St. Andrew committed the grave crime in the eyes of the state of converting Maximilla, wife of the ruler Aigeates, to Christianity. Despite the fact that he was then eighty years old, it was ordered that he be put to death by being nailed upside down to an X-shaped cross. After three days of agony on this vile device, St. Andrew died. The great fisherman had cast his net for Christ for the last time. St. Andrew s remains were brought to Constantinople two hundred years later and in 1460 his head was given to the pope. On 24 September 1964, in an ecumenical gesture, the head was returned to the people of Patras by the pope. It may be the brotherly nature, but he doesn t want to beat his older sister too badly. I mean, I will be definitely be worried about my own game, trying to focus on the best that I can, Markella said. «I am always going to wonder how s he s doing in the back of my mind. Like, oh I wonder how he did on this hole or how s he doing on the back nine or the front nine. I will always wonder and hopefully I will be able to catch one or two holes if I finish early to cheer him on a bit. From: P.O. Box Hogan Road Lewiston, ME To: Both of them will be competing again on the Arrowhead course as the the Class C State Championship and the Girls Individual Championship are both held on that course. The Class A and B Championships are held on Natanis other course, Tomahawk. We are pretty familiar with Arrowhead anyways, Lacombe said. We play it several times a throughout the year in practice rounds. When we were in the Mountain Valley Conference, they had to qualify here as well. The good thing is they are both very comfortable with the course and know the course pretty well. For Demetri, it will be different the next two seasons with Markella graduating in the spring. He may have a chance to pass down what his older siblings have taught him about competing in high school golf as there s one more Gammaitoni sibling on the way. Rodanthi is currently a seventh grader and her freshman year of high school will be Demetri s senior year. I hope so, I hope she continues golfing, Demetri said. It s her first year (playing) this year. Hopefully she continues. 16 General Assembly on Dec. 3
