3 Dear Parishioners, SCHOOL NEWS We had our Science Fair this week. Fourth through eighth grades participated. There were many well thought out projects that took a lot of time to prepare. The judges were very complimentary of how talented and polite St. Joseph students are. We are all proud of their efforts. Students were out of school on Friday while teachers went to Fatima to collaborate with Fatima s staff on curriculum. We will be out of school on Monday for President s Day. Tuesday the students will get to have their reward for the blood drive. They will get to wear their pajamas and have a movie and popcorn before we head into the Lenten season on Wednesday. We are in need of walkie-talkies. We have a few at school, but they do not charge well and rarely work properly. We use them regularly for dismissal. If you have any that you are no longer using or would like to purchase new ones and donate, we would be very appreciative. We are getting closer to getting started on building lofts in the middle school building closets. If you are interested in donating materials or money to help us get started, please contact me via or calling the school. Thank you in advance! Have a wonderful week! One hundred and thirty-five or 28.7% of our 470 parish families have donated $19,648 to meet our parish's Catholic Stewardship Appeal (CSA) goal of $18,925. Many thanks to those who have contributed! Because of the extraordinary generosity of faithful parishioners throughout the diocese, the Catholic Stewardship Appeal has reached $1.9 million or 95.3% of its goal! Let s all do our share to help it reach the final 5% of its $1.995 million goal so that the ministries that serve the people of our Local Church and communities may be fully funded. Message from Sister Cindy Parish Outreach: During Lent we again will be participating in a program through Catholic Relief Services called Rice Bowl. 4 2015 Lenten Regulations & Admonitions For the Diocese of Jefferson City 1. Abstinence: all persons who have already celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. 2. Fasting: everyone, from the celebration of their 18th birthday to their 59th birthday, is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting is generally understood to mean eating only one full meal each day. Two other partial meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken; but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Voluntary fasting on other weekdays of Lent is highly recommended. But please note: when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, neither the law of fasting nor the law of abstinence obliges. These are minimal penitential practices and should not be lightly excused. If in doubt, please consult your parish priest. Other recommended forms of fasting, as regards alcoholic drink, needless television, video games, internet use, and social entertainment, are of true spiritual value and strongly encouraged. 3. Almsgiving: The act of giving to the poor, in the most ancient tradition of the Church, is an expression of penance, a witness of fraternal charity, and an expression of Lenten conversion. Therefore, all Catholics are encouraged to support generously the charitable works of the whole Church: through regular stewardship to their parish, support of charities, and their generous response to the diocesan Catholic Stewardship Appeal. 4. Prayer: In order to deepen one s love for Christ, Catholics are urged all the more to participate in the Sacramental life of the Church during Lent by attending daily Mass and frequent the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. St. Joseph, Westphalia Mini-Mission Trying for a Closer Relationship with God February 22-24, 2015 This Mini-Mission will give us an opportunity to consider how we might develop a closer relationship with God. Knowing a little more about how Jesus lived His life might increase our appreciation of the way that He loved others as He loved Himself. Becoming more aware of the way that God reaches out might enable us to become more receptive to the many ways that God is attempting to speak to us. Choosing to have face-to-face conversations with the Lord might truly make Him a bigger part of our lives. This Lent can be the time when we put a little more effort into our relationship to God. Effort increases our potential for developing that closer relationship. Our mission will begin with the weekend Masses on February 21 & 22. Then Sunday through Tuesday evenings (February 22-24), we will gather in the church at 7:00 p.m. There will be a different talk each evening followed by a time for refreshments and questions. You can go to all of them (which is best) but you will also get something important out of each one. These talks are directed more towards adults and adolescents. Topics for each night are as follows: Sunday: Seeing Jesus s Love for Himself Manifested in His Love for Others Monday: Recognizing How God Has been Breaking Into Our Lives Tuesday: Choosing Where to Look For God in Our Future Life Short Bio: Fr. Ron Kreul, O.P. is a Dominican Priest who is the Minister to Priests in the Diocese of Jefferson City.
