Those words from the beginning of Pope Benedict s first Encyclical Letter Deus Caritas Est ( God is Love ) describe what Lent is all about. Put simply: It leads us here, to Holy Week. I find it helpful sometimes not to use the usual titles Maundy Thursday; Good Friday; Easter Sunday but their titles from Latin: Thursday within the Supper of the Lord; Friday within the Passion of the Lord; Sunday within the Resurrection of the Lord. This explains why, as we moved towards the end of Lent, the Gospel according to Saint John has been our guide. For Saint John s Gospel teaches: the hour of Our Lord s glory is Calvary, the hour when his Mother takes her stand at his side; the hour when, lifted up from the earth, he draws all to himself; the hour when from his pierced side flow the waters of the Holy Spirit to renew the face of the earth. And that is the second teaching of Saint John: this is for us: it is a story which shall become our own: children of God in the Only-begotten Son: light and life through and with and in him. For what he accomplished means: I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. RETIRING COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND FOR THE UPKEEP OF THE HOLY PLACES

CALVARY WALK ON FRIDAY Why not make a public statement of our faith by going along and being part of the Calvary Walk on Good Friday morning? Meet at Low Hall Car Park on Liverpool Road, Platt Bridge at 11.15am and walk along Liverpool Road to Saint Benedict s Church. All welcome bring the whole family! THE LITURGY OF THE EASTER TRIDUUM Triduum means The Three Days, each of which day tells a different part of the story of Jesus saving action. We look at the Easter Triduum as one single celebration which lasts for three days. So the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Thursday night has no formal ending, and the Good Friday Afternoon Liturgy has neither a formal beginning nor a formal ending, and the whole three days reach their climax in the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night, because we cannot separate the Passion and Death of the Lord from his Resurrection. We don t spend all of the three days in church (that would be unrealistic!) but at various times during those days we are called together as one united community to reflect and to remember. Since the whole Easter Triduum tells the complete story, try if you can to make it to each of the three principal liturgical celebrations over those days. LATELY DECEASED Our deepest sympathy and prayers are with the families and friends of: Anne Pennington of Heathlea, Hindley Green who died on the 21st of March aged 73 years. Her funeral rites were celebrated last Thursday at Sacred Heart Church prior to burial at Gidlow Cemetery. Bernard Green from Saile Lane, Tyldsley (formerly of Taylor Road, Hindley Green) who died on the 25th of March aged 69 years. His funeral rites will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church next Wednesday at 12 noon prior to burial at Hindley Cemetery. Joe Weston Tel The Holy Family Platt Bridge ARCHDIOCESE OF LIVERPOOL The Sacred Heart Hindley Green THE PARISH BULLETIN Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord 8th April 2012 Jesus resurrection is not a theory or a myth, a dream or a fairy story, but a singular and unrepeatable event. Jesus of Nazareth who died on Good Friday and was taken down from the cross and buried, has victoriously left the tomb. And what we celebrate today is not just about a one-off moment in history. The Risen Christ has opened up for each one of us the opportunity to be a new creation, to be part of a new and risen and glorified humanity. Jesus is risen not just because his memory remains alive in the hearts and minds of his disciples, but because he himself truly lives and loves today. And in him we already enjoy the gift of eternal life.

4 THANK YOU Sincere thanks to all who worked so hard in the preparations for and the celebration of our first shared Easter Triduum Liturgy between Sacred Heart and Holy Family communities, and especially the musicians at both churches who joined together to lead the music at the liturgy in each church. Liverpool City Centre Street Pastors works in partnership with Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council Safe Team and was launched in Street Pastors patrol the city centre every weekend between 10.30pm on Saturday and 4.00am on Sunday. 8 PARENTS MEETINGS THIS WEEK Monday 23rd April Meeting in Holy Family School Hall at 3.40pm for Parents of children in Years Four, Five and Six at Holy Family Catholic Primary School and who would like their children to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this year in Pentecost week. Thursday 26th April Meeting in Sacred Heart Church at 3.30pm for Parents of children in Years Four, Five and Six at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School and who would like their children to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this year in Pentecost week. THANK YOU FROM CAFOD As we celebrate with Easter joy, I wish to thank you for your exceptional generosity in response to the CAFOD Lent appeal. The government matched funding scheme - which will double donations that CAFOD receives up to the 17th of May - has really caught the imagination of Catholics across England and Wales. The generosity of people in parish Fast Day collections and direct donations to CAFOD will make a huge difference to the lives of many people who suffer most from the effects of extreme poverty and injustice. At a time when the price of essential commodities such as food has risen dramatically in many of the poorest countries the value of the pound against other currencies has dropped. This means that the cost of supporting those in need has increased significantly. That is why the care and concern shown by our Catholic community is particularly needed was especially appreciated during Lent. Many thanks also to our priests for all the support they show for the work of CAFOD when so many demands are made of their time. Without the support and encouragement of clergy across England and Wales CAFOD would not be able to do its work. Warmest Easter greetings to you from everyone at CAFOD. And please pray during Easter that we may be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us and work for the well being of those most in need. With best wishes. In this way, the Christian community itself becomes a manifestation of the Love of God in which every calling is contained. As a response to the demands of the new commandment of Jesus, this can find eloquent and particular realisation in Christian families, whose love is an expression of the love of Christ who gave himself for his Church. Within the family, a community of life and love, young people can have a wonderful experience of this self-giving love. Indeed, families are not only the privileged place for human and Christian formation; they can also be the primary and most excellent seed-bed of vocations to a life of consecration to the Kingdom of God, by helping their members to see, precisely within the family, the beauty and the importance of the priesthood and the consecrated life. May pastors and all the lay faithful always cooperate so that in the Church these homes and schools of communion may multiply, modelled on the Holy Family of Nazareth, the harmonious reflection on earth of the life of the Most Holy Trinity. With this prayerful hope, I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing to all of you, and especially those young men and women who strive to listen with a docile heart to God s voice and are ready to respond generously and faithfully. 10 FROM THE DEAN: PASTORAL AREA PLAN This weekend when the Church throughout the world prays for vocations to the priesthood and religious life we present in all parishes of the Pastoral Area the fruit of the work undertaken by the Pastoral Area Working Group and the Pastoral Area Clergy Group. It is the result of many hours work and I offer my thanks to all who have played any part in moving us to this point. It has not been an easy journey but it is a necessary one if we are to take seriously our responsibility to be the Church, the followers of Christ in this time and place. Please read the report carefully, especially the appendices which seek to put flesh on the bones of the recommendations being made. In the next week or so there will be details of the consultation meetings in each cluster area. Please do make every effort to be part of the formal discussions that will take place across the Pastoral Area, remembering that at this stage it is a plan for discussion. Nothing is set in stone. However we need to be attentive to the realities we face and any suggestions need to take into account the current situation, the number of priests available, the financial resources, the building costs and most importantly the age profile and number of the parishioners attending Mass. Above all be assured in this time of change and transition the Lord will never leave His flock untended Fr Ron Johnson VF OUR PARISH FAMILY This weekend we welcome into the People of God and our Parish Family through the celebration of Baptism at Holy Family: Oscar Lee Fishwick from Cheltenham Avenue, Ince aged six months; Joshua Anthony Southworth from Dunster Close, Platt Bridge aged ten months: and Lewis Andrew Talbot aged eighteen months, and his sister Caitlan Isabel Talbot aged six months, from Warrington Road, Abram. Our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of Mary Taylor from Warrington Road, Abram who died on the 22nd of April aged 95 years. Her funeral rites will be celebrated in Wigan Crematorium Chapel next Tuesday at 2.00pm prior to cremation. And James Neil Tarpey from St. John s Court, Warrington Road, Abram who died on the 18th of April aged 66 years. His funeral rites will be celebrated at Holy Family Church also next Tuesday at 2.30pm prior to cremation at Wigan Crematorium. May the Lord welcome them into the fullness of Resurrection Life. Holy Family parishioners of long-standing will be saddened to learn of the death at a ripe old age last Monday of Margaret Gilligan, formerly of Carr Street, Platt Bridge and once the proprietor of O Gara s Shop, who moved to live in a Residential Home in Hindley many years ago. Her funeral rites and her burial will be taking place in her native Ireland. May the Risen Lord welcome her home. CANON JIMMY COLLINS Many will know Canon Jimmy Collins, a pioneer of the healing ministry within the Archdiocese of Liverpool and one of our most well-known and much-loved priests. Father Jimmy died on the 19th of April aged 94 years and just three months short of the 70th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. His body will be received into the Metropolitan Cathedral for Mass at 7.00pm on Monday (30th of April) and the Cathedral will remain open until 9.00pm.
