3 OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 8:4-12 You shall say to them, Thus, says the LORD: When men fall, do they not rise again? If one turns away, does he not return? Why then has this people turned away in perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return. I have paid attention and listened, but they have not spoken rightly; no man relents of his evil, saying, What have I done? Everyone turns to his own course, like a horse plunging headlong into battle. Even the stork in the heavens knows her times, and the turtledove, swallow, and crane keep the time of their coming, but My people know not the just decrees of the LORD. How can you say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie. The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the Word of the LORD, so what wisdom is in them? Therefore, I will give their wives to others and their fields to conquerors, because from the least to the greatest everyone is greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely. They have healed the wound of My people lightly, saying, Peace, peace, when there is no peace. Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore, I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says Jesus is accursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the

To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 5 OFFERTORY Hymnal page: 159 RECEIVING THE SACRAMENT AT TRINITY Trinity Lutheran Church, according to our Lord s Word, practices closed communion. We kindly ask any visitor to speak with one of our Pastors before partaking of the Lord s Supper. According to the Words of Institution we believe the Supper to be a participation in the very body and blood of Jesus. The Pastors have been entrusted with these gifts as stewards of the mysteries to serve this meal carefully. We believe that it is a communion in all we believe, teach, and confess as Lutherans. We want to serve this meal to you faithfully and for you to understand our beliefs before you commune. Every communicant should mark an attendance card before approaching the Lord s Table. 7 THE CHURCH S ONE FOUNDATION (LSB 644) Samuel J. Stone ( ) wrote this hymn as a defense of the creedal article: I believe in... the holy catholic (meaning universal, Christian) Church. At the time the validity of the Old Testament accounts were being questioned (even as today). While the Church must fight (via the Word) against many and various heresies and heretics, it is good to remember that Christ Himself is the foundation of the Church and His confession is such as even the gates of hell cannot prevail against it! Though we see many communions within Her, She is yet one Church, the washed Bride of Christ. Through all strife and divisions, saints in heaven (along with saints on earth) cry out, How long? When Christ returns in all glory all saints will dwell in heaven. We will all confess in blessed victory song that we have been... saved by Your grace. (Rev. Thomas E. Thank you, Peggy Baike, for leading the service from the organ bench! CONTINUING EDUCATION: GOSPEL OF MARK: August Dr. Peter Scaer will be at Trinity teaching a course on the Gospel of Mark. While the course is intended for the area pastors, you are also welcome to attend. The cost for laity is $150 and $225 for clergy. The Gospel of Mark is perhaps the most intriguing and mysterious of the Gospels. Again and again, Jesus, like a roaring lion, confounds our expectations. More than any Gospel, Mark emphasizes a theology of the cross in which Jesus true nature is known only in His suffering. We will also show how Mark has a profound understanding of the Sacraments, which flow from Jesus Himself. Some of our ladies provide lunch and different rolls for breakfast. If you are willing to help with a meal or some food or would like to attend the class please talk with Pastor Sherrill. Dr. Scaer will also preach and teach at Trinity. He is one of the most outspoken defenders of the Christian family in our church body. Those details are still being finalized around his travel schedule. Most recently Dr. Scaer has been teaching for two weeks at the Lutheran Church in Tanzania.
