2 27 th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 05, 2014 NOTES FROM THE PASTOR Dear parishioners: October is designated by the Church as Respect Life month, and the first Sunday as Respect Life Sunday. There are many facets of respect for human life and everyone should be able to find something a little extra they might do this month within that broad spectrum. We might think of a wheel. At the hub is the destruction of innocent unborn human life in the woman. There is a logic to its pre-eminence. It is concrete, objective and decisive. There is no nuance, degree or interpretation. The unborn are the weakest, must dependent and vulnerable. Coming at the very beginning of human life, the loss, in terms of future good works is larger. At the outer rim is the tire, the proper care for those who are approaching death. Then there are all the spokes under the broad umbrella of respect for human life. These include respect for the process by which human life comes into existence. Abortion is often preceded by some irresponsible use of our sexuality. Then there are all the issues of violence of one person toward another: the scourge of gang activity, the horrendous abuse of children, the violence within relationships and crimes against strangers. There is the danger of unjustified recourse to military action or failure to appreciate the Church s refined view of capital punishment. Then there are all the areas that come under the concept of respecting the dignity and enriching the quality of life through responsible use of our material possessions. An insert elsewhere in the bulletin identifies a variety of ways one can address the scourge of abortion. Some concern raising the issue in the public forum, others involve direct support to those who might be vulnerable to the temptation to abort. Everybody can find something to do this month that will enrich respect for human life, created by God in His image. As a most fundamental start, a review of the Catechism s teaching of the commandments 4 through 7 will touch on one aspect of this topic or another. 4 27 th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 05, 2014 INVITATION TO SPREAD THE WORK OF A SAINT St. Vincent de Paul ( ), whose feast day we celebrated Sept 27 th, is the patron of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul founded in 1833 by university students led by Frederic Ozanam ( ) during anti-catholic, post-revolutionary Paris. They were guided in their service by Sister Rosalie Rendu, a Daughter of Charity (order founded in 1633 by Vincent and Louise de Marillac to minister to the poor). Earlier, Vincent had founded in 1617 the Ladies of Charity (laywomen to serve the sick in their homes) and in 1625 the Congregation of the Mission-CM (priest/brothers to evangelize the poor). Vincent died 1660, was canonized in 1737, and declared patron saint of all works of charity in Today the Society is present in 132 countries, and in our own parish! To join in the work of our SVdP parish ministry the Esterman Conference--call SEE Spiritual Enrichment Events Thursday, October 16 7:30pm, St. Cecilia Parish Faith Center STORIES OF FAITH AND CONVERSION OF THREE POPES IN OUR LIFETIME - Their Impact on the Church and the World, John XXIII, John Paul II, Francis Three men have left an indelible mark on the shape of the Catholic Church in the 21 st century, and the relationship the Church will have with the world. All three of these popes have been colorful individuals who lived most of their adult lives witnessing and experiencing the depths of the suffering humans can inflict upon one another. Each had intellectual, emotional, and spiritual transformations in their understanding of God, faith, and their own vocation as priests, born of studying the tradition and their experience of prayer and life. More importantly, all three came to a deep awareness that the world was entering an entirely new era and a new kind of Church was necessary to continue to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This talk will focus on some key revelations Popes John XXIII, John Paul II, and Francis had in their encounter of faith with the real world, and how these personal insights shaped their ministries and their vision of creating a Church that does not flee or hide from the world, but affirms, embraces, and challenges its assumptions and practices. - Mark Markuly, PhD, Dean of Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry PARISH & COMMUNITY EVENTS A huge THANK YOU goes out to all of those, who participated in the 2014 Crop Walk. 7 + + THE SAINTS + MODELS OF CATHOLIC LIFE + + Patrick Middleton SAINT BRUNO Bruno, the eventual founder of the Carthusian Order, was born in 1030 in Cologne, Germany. At an early age, he left Cologne to attend the Cathedral school of Reims, France where he completed his education. Upon his return to Cologne in 1055, Bruno was ordained and given a canonry in the collegiate church at St. Cunibert s. In 1056, he was called back to Reims by Bishop Gervais to serve as a professor of grammar and theology. The next year he was appointed head of the episcopal school. In this position, Bruno oversaw all of the schools, both public and ecclesiastical, within the diocese. He held this position from 1057 to From the words given at his funeral, we can get a good reading on his abilities as a teacher: eloquent, poetic, philosophical, and most importantly, great exegetical (interpretion of Scripture) and theological talents. Bruno s abilities as a teacher are also reflected in the abilities of his students which included Eudes of Chatillon (who would become Pope Urban II) and many others. In 1075, Bruno became chancellor of the Diocese of Reims for which he undertook responsibility for its daily operations. Unfortunately, Bishop Manassas de Gournai (an aristocrat with violent tendencies and apparently no true vocation for the Church) had succeeded Bishop Gervais. Through the efforts of Bruno and the Reims clergy, a council presided over by the Pope s legate suspended Bishop Manassas who then responded by ordering his minions to tear down and plunder the houses of those who had spoken against him, including Bruno. Together with others whose homes had been destroyed, Bruno took refuge in a nearby castle until, in 1080, a definite sentence, supported by a popular riot of the people, forced Manassas to withdraw to the dwellings of Emperor Henry IV who was seeking to assert control over the Catholic Church. As stated in Butler s Lives of the Saints: St. Bruno, [and two others] in a conversation they had one day together in a garden of Bruno s landlord, discoursed -7- on the vanity and false ambitions of the world and on the joys of eternal life, and being strongly affected by their serious reflections, promised one another to forsake the world. * * * [Bruno] forsook the world in a time of flattering prosperity, when he enjoyed in it riches, honor and the favor of men, and when the church of Reims was ready to choose him archbishop. He resigned his benefice and renounced whatever held him in the world, and persuaded some of his friends to accompany him into solitude. With six companions, Bruno applied to St. Hugh, Bishop of Grenoble, to find a suitable place for them. St. Hugh had dreamed of these seven men the night before meeting them, seeing in his dream God building a church in the mountainous desert of Chartreuse and seven stars which directed St. Hugh to that place. He embraced the seven men and granted them the Chartreuse. Bruno and his companions, filled with joy, constructed an oratory and small cells a small distance from one another. They lived solitary lives, but met for Matins and Vespers every day, and for feast days. They would become the Carthusian Order. They spent their time in prayer, studying and copying manuscripts. Given their reputation as very learned men, they were often visited by others seeking instruction. In 1090, Pope Urban II, Bruno s former student, was striving to continue the reforms of Pope Gregory VII and was in almost continuous struggle with Emperor Henry IV and his appointed anti-pope. He therefore called upon Bruno to come to Rome to serve as a private advisor. After Emperor Henry IV forced Pope Urban II, Bruno, and others to flee to the south, Bruno ended up in Calabria Italy where he started another house of the Carthusians. St. Bruno died in Calabria on October 6, Today, the Order he founded has 450 monks and nuns in 24 houses in three continents, all dedicated exclusively to the contemplative life, interceding for the Church and the salvation of the whole world. For more information on the Carthusians, see the critically acclaimed documentary, Into Great Silence. St. Bruno s memorial is October 6.

11 WHAT CAN I DO FOR THE UNBORN? Today Oct 5, 2014 is RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY, ask yourself what you can do for the Unborn? Above all, PRAY! But can you do more as well here are is a comprehensive list of local organizations and events in our area who support the unborn. Support the local Pregnancy Resource Services center in Bremerton (2917 Wheaton Way #201, Bremerton 98210, , ). This wholly-volunteer office provides resources of many kinds to women during and following pregnancy. Publicize the Gabriel Project, ( ANGEL) which offers one-on-one support and mentoring to any pregnant woman needing help. Encourage any person (woman or man) who is suffering as a result of an abortion to contact Project Rachel and Rachel s Vineyard Healing Retreats ( HOPE) for help and healing from and with others who ve been there and are working through the same suffering. Stand up for legal protection for the unborn at the annual March For Life in Olympia in January, near the anniversary of the Roe v Wade & Doe v Bolton Supreme Court decisions which legalized abortion. Or go to the annual March for Life in Washington DC or the Walk for Life West Coast in San Francisco. ( ) Participate in the annual 4US event in Tacoma: a bicycle Ride for Life, Run/Walk for Life, and Family Fun Day raising funds to purchase ultrasound machines for pregnancy resource centers. When a woman contemplating abortion gets to see her unborn baby on ultrasound, she chooses life for her child over 95% of the time! ( ) Come out for the annual Life Chain in Silverdale, at which people line the street for a few hours praying and holding simple pro-life signs (provided). ( ) Come stand in prayerful vigil at the Bremerton Planned Parenthood, any Wednesday (abortion day). Plus, twice a year, during the international 40 Days for Life, people at hundreds of locations simultaneously fast and pray to end abortion, with a prayer presence outside an abortion facility. Our local Wednesdays for Life is an outgrowth of this. ( If you want to save lives by making abortion impossible to ignore or trivialize, consider joining with the Anti-Choice Project, who a couple of times a week stand in a public area displaying pictures of what CHOICE really means: aborted babies. ( ) Contact the Samuel s Hand Coalition, a Kitsap organization that was formed to be a coordinating/contact entity for all these pro-life activities in the local area. If you wish to be put on our list, please notify us (glenn@samuelshand.org, daly0119@comcast.net, P O Box 3207, Bremerton 98310). OPEN YOUR HEARTS TO LIFE! I came so that all might have life, and have it to the full.
