4 CONFESSING OUR NEED FOR FORGIVENESS THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)... Josh Godwin Lord, we want to be the light of the world. We want to be hopeful. But all around us, we find darkness and despair. Too often our instinct is to look away, and to retreat into our own comfort. Forgive us when we serve ourselves, and not others. Forgive us when our light sputters. Forgive us when our hope wavers. Forgive us when we fail to do your will. Strengthen and guide us, so that we may let the light of your love shine throughout the world, bringing hope to all who need it. ~G. We welcome new members Evan and Kyla Sieges as the Advent candle lighters. ABOUT OUR BANNERS Each Sunday during Advent, a new Advent banner will be introduced. The adding of a banner each Sunday is meant to add to our anticipation and joy as the coming of the Christ child draws near. The banners will explore, in sequence, the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy, Love. 5

6 The first banner of the series is the banner of Hope. The image of the sprig coming forth from the stump is from Isaiah 11:2: A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. Advent hope is God-based hope, hope that springs from the barrenness of a past that holds no promise in itself. In time, the figure of the stem of Jesse or the righteous branch of Jeremiah 33:15 became associated with the hope of the Messiah. Christians believe this hope, this promise was fulfilled in the coming of Jesus. The artist for the series is our own Bambi Setzer. PLEASE REFER TO P. 30 FOR ADDITIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS. 6

7 THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT: PEACE CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL 2017 Sunday, December 10, :45 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. How Far Is It to Bethlehem? THE PRELUDE Advent Joy... Brian Childers Chancel Bells How Far Is It to Bethlehem?... Douglas Smith Knollwood Brass THE PROCESSIONAL Arise, Your Light Has Come... David Danner Combined Choirs, Knollwood Brass, Chancel Bells Awake, my spirit, awake lute and harp; I will awake at the dawn of day. I will confess You, O Lord among the nations. I will raise a psalm to You, For Your love is wide as the heavens, and Your truth reaches to the skies! Wake, awake, for night is flying, the watchmen on the heights are crying; awake, Jerusalem, at last. Midnight hears the welcome voices, and at the thrilling cry rejoices: "Come forth, you maidens! Night is past. The Bridegroom comes! Awake; your lamps with gladness take!" Alleluia! Prepare yourselves to meet the Lord, whose light has stirred the waiting guard. Zion hears the watchmen singing, and in her heart new joy is springing. She wakes, she rises from her gloom, For her Lord comes down all-glorious, the strong in grace, in truth victorious. Her star is ris'n; her light is come. O, come, You Blessed One, Lord Jesus, God's own Son. Sing hosanna! We go until the halls we view where You have bid us dine with You. Now let all the heav'ns adore You, and saints and angels sing before You. The harps and cymbals all unite. Of one pearl each shining portal, where, dwelling with the choir immortal, we gather round your dazzling light. No eye has seen, no ear has yet been trained to hear what joy is ours! Crescendos rise; Your halls resound; hosannas blend in cosmic sound. Arise, O Jerusalem! Arise clothed in light! Your light has come, and the glory of God upon your hearts will shine. Alleluia! THE WELCOME AND INVOCATION... Bob Setzer, Jr. THE LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE [10:45 a.m. only]... Matt, Victoria, and Eleanor Tamer One: In the beginning was the Word. All: We sing words. We pray words. We treasure words. We regret words. One: And the Word became flesh and dwelled among us. All: In worship, we open our hearts to the Word who still speaks to us. One: In You, may we find peace. All: Through You, may we make peace. One: In a fractured world, we light a candle called peace, All: For You are the light whom darkness cannot overcome. Those who are able will stand. 7

8 One: Praying for peace within ourselves, All: Praying for peace among ourselves, One: And praying for peace across God's beloved world, All: We light this Candle of Peace. ~Peggy Haymes *THE CONGREGATIONAL HYMN OF PRAISE, NO. 142 Long Ago, Prophets Knew... PERSONENT HODIE Knollwood Brass, Chancel Bells, Congregation THE ADVENT CAROLS Magnificat... Z. Randall Stroope The Chancel Choir Trebles; Rachel Wiggins, soprano Magnificat, anima mea Dominum. My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. Osanna in excelsis! For God considered my lowliness. Behold, all generations shall call me blessed, For God is mighty and has done wondrous things to me. Holy is the Lord of hosts. Those who fear the Lord will receive mercy forevermore from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm, He has put down the proud, He has broken the wicked spirits, He plucked the mighty from their seats, exalting the humble. The hungry will be filled with good things, in remembrance of his mercy He helped Israel as promised to our fathers, Abraham and his seed forever. Glory to the Father, Glory to the Son, Glory to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, Now and ever shall be, World without end. Amen! Jesus Christ the Apple Tree... Mark Patterson The Youth Choir The tree of life my soul hath seen, laden with fruit, and always green: The trees of nature fruitless be compared with Christ the apple tree. His beauty doth all things excel: by faith I know, but ne er can tell The glory which I now can see in Jesus Christ the apple tree. For happiness I long have sought, and pleasure dearly I have bought: I missed of all: but now I see tis found in Christ the apple tree. I m weary with my former toil, here I will sit and rest awhile: Under the shadow I will be of Jesus Christ the apple tree. This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, it keeps my dying faith alive; Which makes my soul in hast to be with Jesus Christ the apple tree. THE TRANSITION O Little Town of Bethlehem... ST. LOUIS The Congregation [Congregation will remain seated] O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. 8

9 THE CHRISTMAS CAROLS Born for Us that Christmas Night... Mary Lynn Lightfoot The Chapel Choir, The Carol Choir Cradled in a cattle stall, tiny baby Lord of all. Angels with their songs of joy sang praises to the Blessed Boy. Sing allelu! Sing allelu! The stars up in the sky shone bright. Sing allelu! Sing allelu! Born for us that Christmas night. Shepherds came to see the Child, lying there so meek and mild. Wise Men traveling from afar were guided by the shining star. Sing allelu! Sing allelu! The starts up in the sky shone bright. Sing allelu! Sing allelu! Born for us that Christmas night. What a wondrous sight they beheld that night! Kneeling by his bed, the radiant light beamed round his head. How Far Is It to Bethlehem?... All the air, and ev rywhere, Gloria! Come let us all both great and small sing Gloria! Hail the star where hope is burning, Gloria! Love Who with love is yearning, ever yearning, Gloria! Come and dwell in glory forever and ever. Far on high in joy that can alter never. Dwell in the house of Love forever, ever and ever gloria! THE TRANSITION O Little Town of Bethlehem... ST. LOUIS The Congregation, seated For Christ is born of Mary and, gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wond'ring love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth. Where children pure and happy pray to the blessed Child, where misery cries out to thee, son of the Mother mild; where charity stands watching and faith holds wide the door, the dark night wakes, the glory breaks, and Christmas comes once more. THE CHILDREN S CHOIR ANTHEM Somebody s Talkin bout Jesus... arr. Terry D. Taylor The Chapel Choir, The Carol Choir Everywhere I go, everywhere I go, my Lord. Everywhere I go, somebody s talkin bout Jesus. They turned away Mary and Joseph from the inn. Born in a stable in Bethlehem. Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King! Stephen Paulus The Chancel Choir; The Youth Choir Sara Wichers, soprano; Mark Jensen, tenor; Annie Winkelman, oboe How far is it to Bethlehem? Not very far. Shall we find a stable room lit by a star? Can we see the little child, is he within? If we lift the wooden latch, may we go in? May we stroke the creatures there, ox, ass, or sheep? May we peep like them and see Jesus asleep? If we touch his tiny hand will he awake? Will he know we ve come so far just for his sake? Great kings have precious gifts, and we have naught, little smiles and little tears are all we have brought, For all weary children Mary must weep. Here on his bed of straw sleep, children, sleep. God in his mother s arms, babes in the byre, sleep, as they sleep who find their heart s desire. 10

14 Producer Debbie Pruitt Stage Manager/Lights Bill Hearn Debbie Pruitt Production Team Sound John Roach Staging Coordinator Rachel Wiggins ABOUT OUR WORSHIP Today is the Second Sunday in Advent. This morning s candle-lighting liturgy was written by Knollwood member Peggy Haymes. We welcome new members Matt, Victoria, and Eleanor Tamer as the Advent candle lighters. ABOUT THE CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL Each Advent/Christmas season at Knollwood our musicians join forces for the annual Christmas Festival. Begun in this present form in 2003, our children, youth, and adult singers are combined with three handbells choirs, Knollwood brass, and guest instrumentalists for a musical feast, celebrating the coming of Christ in the form of a babe. The 2017 version of our festival is themed How Far Is It to Bethlehem after the English Christmas carol of that title. This carol will appear in a number of forms throughout the festival, beginning with a newly commissioned brass prelude, written for today s service. In addition to arrangements of this carol, a number of pieces are selections by the Chancel Choir as their favorites over these years of music ministry with Ken Wilson. This festival will be Dr. Wilson s final festival; he retires in February. If you happen to be reading this before the festivals, we hope that you will invite friends and family to worship with us. ABOUT OUR BANNERS Each Sunday during Advent, a new Advent banner will be introduced. The adding of a banner each Sunday is meant to add to our anticipation and joy as the coming of Christ child draws near. The banners will explore, in sequence, the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy, Love. The second banner of the series is the banner of Peace. The image of the lion laying down with the lamb is drawn from Isaiah 11:6: The wolf shall lie down with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The peace Isaiah describes, when mortal enemies are reconciled, is a peace only God can give. This is the peace God s Son comes into the world to bring. The artist for the series is our own Bambi Setzer. PLEASE REFER TO P. 30 FOR ADDITIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS. 14

16 THE ANTHEM What Sweeter Music... John Rutter The Chancel Choir What sweeter music can we bring than a carol, for to sing The birth of this our heavenly King? Awake the voice! Awake the string! Dark and dull night, fly hence away, and give the honor to this day, That sees December turned to May. Why does the chilling winter's morn smile, like a field beset with corn? Or smell like a meadow newly-shorn, Thus, on the sudden? Come and see the cause, why things thus fragrant be: 'Tis He is born, whose quickening birth gives life and luster, public mirth, To heaven, and the under-earth. We see him come, and know him ours, who, with his sunshine and his showers, Turns all the patient ground to flowers. The darling of the world is come, And fit it is, we find a room to welcome him. The nobler part of all the house here, is the heart. Which we will give him; and bequeath this holly, and this ivy wreath, To do him honour, who's our King, And Lord of all this revelling. What sweeter music can we bring, than a carol for to sing The birth of this our heavenly King? *THE GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 1:46b Frank O Neill One: This is the Gospel of Christ. All: Thanks be to God. *THE HYMN OF DEVOTION, NO. 174 Angels from the Realms of Glory... REGENT SQUARE We invite the children, grades 1 st through 3 rd to remain in worship with their parents. 17 One: Lift up your hearts! All: We lift them to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise! The Prayer of Confession (Unison) God, we come today to celebrate, but we confess we often become bogged down in the material aspects of this season. Our thoughts are consumed by the busyness leading up to Christmas. We may have come this morning seeking, rather than feeling, the joy of Christ come into the world. Lord, help us to give thanks in all circumstances. Remind us you came to bring us good news, and you call us to share it. Lead us, so that we may bring your comfort and justice to those around us. ~Bonnie McCarson The Words of Institution Sharing the Bread and the Cup We invite the congregation to come forward for communion. Please approach the rail using the two center aisles, and exit down the side aisles. You may kneel or stand as you wish and receive the bread and cup. All wafers are gluten-free. If you prefer to have communion served at your seat, please indicate with a raised hand and a deacon will assist you. The Bread and the Cup A Tapestry of Carols... Traditional Rita Almond, flute; Ken Wilson, guitar THE AGAPE FEAST IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL Worship on Agape Sunday at Knollwood is experienced in two places. After receiving communion at the rail, worshipers are invited to walk over to the Fellowship Hall where an Agape Feast awaits. During this time we celebrate our unity in Christian love as demonstrated by the love of Christ for the world. As part of the celebration, we will distribute ornaments to the children. There are offerings for those with dietary restrictions (gluten-free, nut-free, sugar-free, vegetarian) near the Christmas tree, marked with balloons. ABOUT OUR WORSHIP Today is the Third Sunday in Advent. This morning s candle-lighting liturgy and prayer of confession were written by Knollwood member Bonnie McCarson. We welcome new members Chase and Sara Smith as the Advent candle lighters. We express appreciation to Rita Almond, Daniel Winkelman, and David Winkelman for sharing their musical gifts this morning. ABOUT OUR BANNERS Each Sunday during Advent, a new Advent banner has been introduced. The adding of a banner each Sunday is meant to add to our anticipation and joy as the coming of Christ child draws near. The banners explore, in sequence, the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy, Love. Traditionally, the third Sunday of Advent is known as Gaudete Sunday from the Latin word for Rejoice! Paul encourages the Philippians to rejoice for the Lord is near (Phil. 4:4-5). Even so, the church rejoices as angels above Bethlehem s field proclaim good news of great joy for all the people! in the coming of the Christ child (Luke 2:10). The banner s depiction of a trumpet framed by angel s wings recreates this moment. The artist who designed and painted the Advent banners is our own Bambi Setzer. PLEASE REFER TO P. 30 FOR ADDITIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS. 17

Layne and Virginia Starling, Anne and Lee Compere One: Today, we come together, leaning close to catch the whispered promise. All: We await the birth of love into our broken world. One: As we listen, we, like Mary, find ourselves perplexed, pondering what God s message of hope means for us. All: We remember God s steadfast love, proclaiming it to all generations. One: As we light the Candle of Love, we watch as the flame ignites our hearts, All: Kindle in us the fire of your love, O God. Amen. ~Corinne Causby CONFESSING OUR NEED FOR FORGIVENESS THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)... Diane Lipsett God of Loving Kindness, we confess that we often do not love others as you call us to love. We hurry through life, too busy for the time and the work that love demands. We hoard the love we receive, fearful that it will run out, forgetting that love grows as we give. Thank you for the pause that Advent brings: asking us to look closer, listen harder, and lean in. Help us not to miss your love, as it is born in us. Open us to give to those we encounter, the love you ve given us so freely. ~Corinne Causby * Those who are able will stand. Ushers will seat those waiting. Hearing aids and large print hymns are available from the ushers. 18

The Son of God, as scriptures said, was virgin born in a tiny shed, Where simple shepherds stood hard by while heavenly sound filled up the sky. Now let us stand, uncovered all, before this crèche in lowly stall, Where kings and angels dignify God s gift, His Son, in humility. We do not know, we cannot tell what songs were sung, what starlight fell, Or why the holy mystery stands for so many years in so many lands. *THE GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 1: Josh Godwin One: This is the Gospel of Christ. All: Thanks be to God. *THE HYMN OF DEVOTION, NO. 147 Away in a Manger... AWAY IN A MANGER We invite the children, grades 1 st through 3 rd to remain in worship with their parents. Children s Worship is on the first and third, fifth Sundays of the month. Worship Care for preschool and kindergarten is offered weekly. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE... Bob Setzer, Jr. THE ANTHEM Sleep Now, Little One... Dan Knight The Chancel Choir; Dan Knight, piano Ten fingers, ten toes, tiny hands, little nose, Angels foretold you, Holy one so dear, precious little baby, now you are here, So sleep now, little one, close your eyes now, little one, sleep. A hush falls around Him, so quietly He lay, near His mother He stretches there on the hay, So sleep now, little one, sleep, close your eyes now, little one, sleep. How gently He stirs now, how softly He cries, the light of heaven is in His eyes, So sleep now, little one, sleep. THE SERMON... Bob Setzer, Jr. ADVENT LOVE 19

This morning s candle-lighting liturgy and prayer of confession were written by Knollwood member Corinne Causby. We welcome new members Layne and Virginia Starling with Anne and Lee Compere as the Advent candle lighters. Appreciation is expressed to Tim Pennell and Dan Knight for sharing their musical gifts this morning. The scriptures say the Virgin Mary ran to her relative, Elizabeth, in hopes of making sense of what was happening to her (Luke 1:36-43) and pondered in her heart what the angel had said (Luke 1:29; 2:19). The banner depicts a visibly pregnant Mary contemplating the star of Bethlehem, waiting as every pregnant woman must, for the fulfillment of the hope within her. The artist who designed and painted the Advent banners is our own Bambi Setzer. PLEASE REFER TO P. 30 FOR ADDITIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS. 20

TRADITIONAL CHRISMON ORNAMENTS ON THE SANCTUARY TREE The ornaments on the trees in the baptistry and in the narthex have been lovingly made by past and present members of Knollwood to celebrate the birth of Jesus and proclaim Him as our Lord. Many of the ornaments in the sanctuary were among the first made here in Another group refurbished them in the 1980s. Many additional ornaments were made in Each ornament celebrates the risen Christ through symbols, some ancient, some used by Christ himself and his contemporaries, others developed by Christians over the years. White and gold are used in intricate combinations to form Chrismons (CHRISt + MONograms) that lead us to meditate on Christ s humble birth, His revealing ministry, and God s loving sacrifice for our redemption. If you are interested in more details about the symbols used in specific Chrismons, brochures are available in the narthex. ~Based on information published by The Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia.
