Dear Parishioners, What a tremendous celebration for our Fall Festival last weekend! Could we have scripted a better day? Thank you to everyone who helped in any way to make this day such a memorable celebration for our parish community. An event of this magnitude takes many gifted and talented people. I am grateful to the many men and women of Holy Infant who volunteered in coordinating each activity throughout the day and evening. And, a special thanks to each of you who came and participated in the festivities of the day. Without the generous help and support of so many people, this event could not happen. All who were present certainly helped to make the Fall Festival a magnificent parish festival. Finally, thanks be to God for a day of sun, beautiful weather and safety for all. There is, for sure, a spirit of involvement in our parish which makes for a great and vibrant community. Speaking of parish celebrations, it is just one week from today that we will be celebrating 50 years of faithful service and dedication of our school principal, Sr. Rosario. The celebration will be held at the 10:15 a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 28. A reception following Mass will be held in the upper cafeteria. All are invited! I encourage you to attend and offer Sr. Rosario your best wishes and congratulations for such dedicated service to the students and families here at Holy Infant. As you know, we have been blessed through the goodness of Sr. Rosario Delaney who first arrived at Holy Infant in August of She began as a first grade teacher in our school and has done so much throughout the years to help the little ones as Sister calls them, grow in faith, love, service and academics. Others have said of her: She is my inspiration when I see what she does so much for the students she is the spirit that makes a house a home...she makes this not an institution but a true community of love and learning Sister is the heart of the school she has done so much to bring Holy Infant to the forefront she is one of a kind her level of love for the kids is something that always inspires. Sister has often said: When I walk in the hallways and these little ones run up and hug you, then you know school isn t a threatening place for them and they must be happy here. Also, on Monday, September 29, we will celebrate a special liturgy in honor of Sister s 50 years of service to Holy Infant at 10:00 a.m. We have the privilege of having Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, with us to preside at Mass. As many of you know, Cardinal Dolan is a graduate of Holy Infant School. He attended St. Louis Preparatory Seminary South in Shrewsbury, Cardinal Glennon College in St. Louis and completed his priestly formation at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. He was appointed to the College of Cardinals in And, it all began here at Holy Infant! I extend a special invitation to all to join us on Monday, September 29 as we celebrate with Cardinal Dolan the 50th anniversary of Sr. Rosario. It will be a great weekend, and I hope you will be able to join us for both of these celebrations. God s blessings to you and your family,

6 The Deacon s Corner On our continuing look at some of the prayers prayed quietly during Mass, we now take a look at the prayer said while purifying the vessels after Communion. This is a time when people sometimes get frustrated at the priest or deacon as it may seem to take forever to get the dishes washed! This goes far beyond simply washing dishes! These vessels (chalice and communion cups) have held the most precious gift given to us by Jesus Christ the Blessed Sacrament! Because of this, and out of reverence for the Blessed Sacrament, it wouldn t be proper to leave particles of the Body of Christ or drops of His Precious Blood just lying around. These particles, drops, and vessels that have held them, need to be treated with the utmost respect and purified as soon as possible. The actual process of purifying vessels is to be done by a priest, deacon, or installed acolyte, and is fairly involved. It consists of pouring water over the fingers of the priest or deacon to remove any of the particles that remain from distributing Communion. At our parish you will usually see the priest or deacon pour this water into one of the empty ciboria that was used during Communion. This water will be poured from one ciboria into another until all ciboria are rinsed with this water and eventually poured into the priest s chalice for consumption. Then all ciboria and the chalice are wiped down to remove any remaining particles or droplets. The Communion cups are purified in the same manner at the table near the baptismal font. During this purifying of the vessels, one of the most beautiful of the quiet prayers is said, What has passed our lips as food, O Lord, may we possess in purity of heart, that what has been given to us in time may be our healing for eternity. Isn t that a beautiful prayer! This prayer is prayed silently by the priest or deacon on behalf of all who have received the Blessed Sacrament at that Mass - that we may be aware of, and grateful for, receiving God s nourishment, grace, and mercy. We are living tabernacles as we carry the Blessed Sacrament after receiving Communion - may we be truly grateful for this Eucharistic grace that has been poured into our hearts! So be patient with your priests and deacons there s a reason that the vessels are purified with reverence! We should stand in awe at what these vessels have contained! That s our faith rich in Sacred Tradition based in Sacred Scripture! See you next time! God Bless, Deacon Daniel Raidt C I K P M For I was hungry and you gave me food...in prison and you visited me. Mt. 25:35-36 Did you ever wonder how you could answer this request from Jesus? One of our parishioners needs your help in supporting the work of the team that will bring Kairos Inside retreat to the Menard maximum security prison in Chester, IL. on October Pray that God s will be accomplished for the 30+ residents we will be serving on the weekend, for all team members and for all in a supporting role. You can help by making cookies. Recipes and packaging guidelines can be obtained from team members. We also need place mats or posters. Use your talent with words or art to help bring simple expressions of God s beauty and love into the retreat room. This is a great activity for PSR classes, youth groups, etc. A few simple guidelines need to be met. You can also sponsor an inmate financially. If you can help in any of the ways, please contact Mark Dischert at (314) or mdischert@aol.com. Thank you for any help you can provide. Just as our thoughts are focused on the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year, we are also at the beginning of a new choir year. Now is the perfect time to join the choir. Maybe you were in the choir in years past and wanted to take some time off. Maybe you d like to sing, but aren t quite sure about it. Maybe you ve wanted to sing in the choir, but your schedule was too full. Now is the time to explore the opportunity of sharing your musical talents with our parish community. For more information contact Chuck Chauvin:chuck.chavin@holyinfantballwin. org or after most weekend Masses.
