2 P a g e 2 T h e K i n g s M e s s e n g e r Missio Dei by Pastor Patrick Growing Together in Christ: A Journey and a Destination When looking back over the progress that we have made Growing Together in Christ at Christ the King Lutheran Church over the past several years, I am in awe of the ways we have grown in our identity as a caring community. That growth is expressed in many ways inside and outside of our ministry site. And while it seems like we have achieved most of the goals we identified through our prior visioning process, it's evident that growing together in Christ is both a journey and a destination. We have accomplished much together, but many opportunities await us. Community Outreach: Finding ways to take our ministry outside our building has been a big focus. We now have completed two community worship services at the Franklin Rogers Stadium with the MoonDogs baseball team. We also are planning our third annual Community Block Party to be held on August 28. We reach out into our neighborhood by inviting residents to participate in the Block Party and our community suppers. The Wednesday community suppers continue to be a staple in our efforts to reach out to those in our community who are food insecure. We have become a regular provider of meals at the Food for Friends Saturday lunch program at the Salvation Army. We have an active team of visitation ministers who go to the homes of people who can no longer make it to our worship services and bring them communion on a regular basis. These are just a few of the ways we seek to share the love and grace of God with others. Stewardship of God's Creation: Thanks to the Renew Refresh Rejoice! initiative, we have been able to become much better stewards of God's creation. We have installed 40 kwh of solar panels on our roof to help generate power from the sun. We have installed a new high efficiency roof that will more than double our insulating value which will significantly reduce our gas and electric usage. The new LED lights throughout our facility will help reduce our consumption of electricity. The new HVAC system that we are planning to install in the near future will also help significantly reduce our energy consumption. Not only do all of these projects help to reduce our congregation's carbon footprint, they also will save our congregation thousands of dollars each year in energy costs. The journey so far has been wonderful, however, we have not yet reached the destination. We continue growing together in Christ in all of these ways, but there are so many more things yet to do. In an effort to help identify additional goals and tactics that will help us better live out our mission, we will be conducting a new strategic planning process starting in October. We expect that through the leading of the Holy Spirit, we will be better able to identify God's preferred future for our congregation as we continue growing together in Christ.

3 Proclaim Commission Seeking Members V o l u m e 5 1 I s s u e 3 P a g e 3 Announcements Karen Anderson to Speak at Christ the King Karen Anderson, a Lutheran missionary who Christ the King sponsors, will be speaking at church on Sunday, July 26 at both the 8:15 and 9:30 services. Karen will provide reflection and stories on her work in Chile. As a Lutheran missionary in Chile from , Karen founded and directed EPES, Educación Popular en Salud. EPES works to build a sustainable health care organization dedicated to promoting the health, dignity and rights of poor people in Chile and throughout the region through education, empowerment, and collective action. In 2009, she returned as an ELCA missionary to help the EPES staff design, launch and direct EPES International Training Course on Popular Education in Health which explores the role of the church in the struggle for health and human rights among other tasks. In 2014, EPES work expanded to Kenya as women from the Hope Foundation for African Women (HFAW) participated in the International Training course and have since graduated thirty community health promoters in a rural village in Kenya using the EPES model. 4 ColorFest Run/Walk Benefit V o l u m e 5 1 I s s u e 3 P a g e 4 Announcements Renew, Refresh, Rejoice: Energy Efficiency at CTK On July 17, a crew from Applied Energy Innovations came to activate the new solar panels so they are now generating energy for Christ the King. Anyone is welcome to visit this web page which tracks the amount of energy generated in real time: With the new solar panels and energy efficient roof and lighting, Christ the King has done a lot in recent months to provide cleaner, more efficient energy for our congregation as well as reducing energy costs. Notes from the Library Committee Christ the King s Church Library committee has recently purchased some new books that are available to check out. Vinnie s Diner by Jennifer Allee Vinnie s Diner takes place in the desert between Baker, California and the Nevada state line. When stranded in the desert, Allie needs help. Little does she know that accepting help means embarking on a harrowing journey of self-discovery and making the ultimate decision between life and death. Midnight Sea by Colleen Coble A seemingly random shooting at her aunt s coffee farm has left Lani Tagama blind. Now she must learn to navigate in a world of darkness. With the help of an ex-cop named Ben and a half-trained guide dog, Lani begins to regain her former independence. Feel free to check these out if you re interested. The library has a great selection of books for fans of any genre. The committee is always taking suggestions for new books as well. On Saturday, September 12, a 5K ColorFest Run/Walk will be held at 10:30am, kicking off a benefit for Drew Aufderheide, who has a rare and incurable form of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. Psalm 104:2b 28 Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually. Ps a 15 who satisfies you with good as long as you live. Psalm 103:5a 22 You make the winds your messengers, fire and flame your ministers. Psalm 104:4 29 Remember the wonderful works he has done. Psalm 105:a This Prayer Calendar is a ministry of the Justice and Peace Commission, assisted by Pastor Donohue Sarff Praying the Psalms Perhaps you have heard it many times The book of Psalms in the Bible is the Prayer manual for the believer! This August Prayer Calendar is just a sampling of the treasure we have in that manual. Please note that you have Psalm 100 for the five Sundays of the month. Then Psalm 102 for the first week (Aug. 3-8); Psalm 103 for the second week (Aug 10-15); Psalm 104 for the third week (Aug ); Psalm 105 for the fourth week (Aug 24-29); and Psalm 106 for the fifth week (Aug. 31-Sept, 4). The verses quoted in the calendar are just a sampling of what you will find in these six Psalms. I encourage you to spend an entire week with each of these Psalms. Read, re-read, digest, question, ponder but above all, meet God face to face with the raw facts of life. One of the big differences between the prayers of the Psalms and the prayers we normally pray, is that in the Psalms the focus is on God. So often in our own prayers, we focus on our specific needs or the needs of those around us. There is nothing wrong with that in fact, God encourages us to bring our requests before His Throne of Grace. But if we lose sight of the God who invites us to pray, our prayers are about on the same level as our grocery lists!
