1 june/july 2015 A Note from the Vicar : The Lectionary in the Book of Common Prayer begins on page 896. For those who are not familiar with this, the lectionary is where the Sunday Eucharistic readings can be found for our three year cycle: year A, B, and C. We are currently in year B, which began on the first Sunday of Advent, The 75 th General Convention, in 2006, replaced the BCP lectionary with the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), which we now use. The lectionary also includes a two-year cycle of readings for morning and evening prayer. In addition, there are Eucharistic readings and Daily Office readings for specific dates and occasions. So why am I telling you all of this? Well, it is good for all of us to know where we get our information. And, it helps explain why, if you look at the lectionary, there are two choices for the Old Testament and Psalm for the Sundays beginning with Proper 4. If you were to read the instructions on page 896 of the BCP, you would find an explanation of the two choices. One follows the story line of the Old Testament, and one ties itself to the epistle and Gospel readings. The instructions explain that whichever choice a church makes, they should stay with that choice for the rest of the year. I have been alternating each year as a way to expand the Scripture that is read. Just as we should pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17), we should also read Scripture without ceasing. We should marvel at the work of God throughout history. We should stand in awe of the truth of the Bible, and the way it works in our lives. Try to think of another book that is as relevant today as it was 400 years ago, and the Bible is much older than that! As the summer gets hot and the days long, think of spending a little time each day with your favorite verses. Then, spend a little time with verses you are not familiar with. God will expand your understanding even if you do not think that your mind can be expanded. Read, mark, and inwardly digest the Bible in the translation of your choice! Alleluia! Tom +

2 Happy Birthday, Church of Our Saviour The Church of Our Saviour in Trenton was founded on June 30, Happy 133rd Birthday!! INTERCESSORY PRAYER LIST Receipts for April 2015 Actual Budget Difference Plate $ 1, $ 1, $ Pledge $ 12, $ 8, $ 3, Total $ 13, $ 10, $ 3, Food Bank Report Thank you for continuing to support the food bank outreach ministry! In the first quarter we raised $1274 in the collection plate, and in April $375. The collection plate donations are sent to the food banks quarterly to purchase food for distribution to their participants. We have continued distributing food (for both humans & pets) to both Johnston and Saluda food banks and in addition, a new food bank which serves families in the Ridge Spring area, Helping Hands Ministry. We divide both the food and monetary donations between the 2 large food banks on a 2-1 ratio, and distribute food to our 'new' food bank once a month. Thanks to Ric Vann and Jerrold Watson for helping transport the food to the food banks and to Tom Long for the food collection box at his office. Bring your food donations (non perishable, no glass please) to church each Sunday! The food banks can also distribute items such as toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, bar soap etc) and don't forget spices! We also make a point of including pet food (dog & cat) to help people keep their pet animals, often their only source of companionship. If you would like to participate in this exciting outreach ministry but are unable to attend church, you may make a donation and mail to our church office address!
