2 Seventh Sunday of Easter May 20, 2012 If God so loved us, we also must love one another. 1 John 4:11 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ASCENSION The theological unity, or perhaps even the temporal experience of the early community, made it seem that Jesus resurrection and his ascension were inseparable aspects of a single mystery. Only in the later writings of Luke and John has further theological reflection helped the Christian community to distinguish different dimensions of the mystery. Liturgical tradition has followed the forty-day chronology formulated by Luke. We would miss the point, however, if we were to demand a precise historical chronology of events such as the Resurrection-Ascension that are primarily spiritual in nature and that clearly surpass the bounds of time and space as we know them. What is important for us to grasp is the significance of the Ascension. For Luke, it is the decisive turning point that marks the end of Jesus earthly ministry and the beginning of the disciples Spirit-led ministry and thus the ministry of the whole church down to our own day. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today s celebration varies from place to place. In some parts of the United States, people gather for the Seventh Sunday of Easter, while other places celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. Several years ago, regions of bishops were permitted to decide whether to retain Ascension Day on Thursday, the fortieth day after Easter, or to move the celebration to the nearest Sunday. This new flexibility in the Christian calendar has to do with the desire to gather the Church to celebrate its central feasts fully, and with the Eucharist. Increasingly, as priests serve remote and scattered parishes, this is not always possible mid-week. The Ascension is a key moment for grasping what life in Christ is all about. It is not about a departure, but rather a plan for presence. We who are nourished by the Lord s body and blood in the Eucharist are transformed to be his abiding presence in the world. That is a truth so worth celebrating that we can adjust our calendar in order that the fullest possible gathering of the Church can be achieved. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 4 YOUTH NEWS Saint Anne Youth Ministry St. Anne Youth Ministry will meet on Monday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. The topic for our meeting will be: Rise Up! Fun with Balloons! This session is designed simply to give young people a fun night of activities all designed to be played with balloons. Prayer will focus on the Ascension of Jesus. Youth Ministry/Saint Anne Confirmation For all those who missed the St. Anne Confirmation registration meetings last week, a registration packet will be mailed to you during the week. Please call the Youth Ministry Office to se up a Confirmation interview at ext. 22. St. Anne Confirmation 2012 A reminder to all those who were confirmed on May 5th the last class gathering will be on Sunday, May 20 at 2:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall it will be a BBQ and potluck.and YES, it s mandatory! CYO Girls Basketball, Summer Basketball Camp, Boys Basketball Registration Congratulations to all of our teams for a wonderful Girls Basketball season!! We had a total of 6 teams and 3 are in the Diocese playoffs this weekend: 4 Gold, 4 Black, and 7th grade. Please continue to pray for their continued success and no injuries. Our end of the season Family Picnic, in conjunction with CYO Track and Field, will be held on Saturday, June 2nd at Old Alvarado Park. We will celebrate a successful season as a CYO family. Registration for our 4th annual Summer Basketball Fundamentals Camp will be coming soon! Camp will be held at Alvarado Middle School and the dates are as follows: August 7-9 and August More information will be on the St. Anne website in June. Boys Basketball registration will be taken in August during basketball camp. Priority registration will be given to CCD students and parishioners. Your generosity during the year of money and items help us to provide care and services to those in need. Due to the higher operating costs, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of alameda County can no longer accept donations of goods and items that are not in usable condition. We do not accept mattresses, wall-to-wall carpet, tires, bath tubs, sinks, toilets, paint, oils, large appliances, baby cribs, baby car seats, bikes, bowling balls, exercise equipment, skis, gas lawn mowers. Here is a wish list of items very popular for our booth: small appliances, clothing (all sizes), children s toys, books, backpacks, school supplies, linens, bedspreads, sheets, towels, table cloths, napkins, blankets, small electronic items in good working condition, clocks, radios, tables, chairs, lamps, pictures, picture frames, desks, living and bedroom furniture, lounge chairs, patio furniture, utensils, dishes, bowls, glasses, cups, pots and pans, baking pans, roasters, serving platters.
