2 Welcome to our worship service! In our services here at St. John we have two chief goals. Our first goal is to be built up in our faith through the only means God has given to us, the gospel found in God s Word and Sacraments. Our second goal is to give praise to God Father, Son, & Holy Spirit alone. As we seek these two goals we are equipped to carry out our mission Come, Grow, Live, and Share Christ! Instructions for worship are found in the bulletin and will be announced by pastor. There is a cry room in the back of church available for parents to calm and care for their children during the service. Bathrooms are located downstairs and to the left. 3 DIVINE SERVICE I OPENING HYMN: With Broken Heart and Contrite Sigh CW 303 INVOCATION Please stand. M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. The name of the triune God and the sign of the cross remind worshipers of their baptisms. CONFESSION M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression Lord, have mercy is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian church. 3

4 ABSOLUTION M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. The use of the keys is that special power and right which Christ gave to his church on earth: to forgive the sins of penitent sinners (The Small Catechism, First: What is the use of the keys?). Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. Glory to God in the Highest has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century. C: Refrain M: Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: Have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of God the Father: Receive our prayer, receive our prayer. 5 SALUTATION M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY This greeting has deep roots in Christian worship and marks the beginning of the Word section. M: Let us pray. Almighty God, look with favor on your humble servants and stretch out the right hand of your power to defend us against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Be seated. THE WORD FIRST LESSON: Numbers 16: Then the LORD said to Moses, 24 Say to the assembly, Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. 25Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 He warned the assembly, Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins. 27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents. 28Then Moses said, This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea: 29 If these men die a natural death and experience only what usually happens to men, then the LORD has not sent me. 30 But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt. 31As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all Korah s men and all their possessions. 33 They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth 5

6 closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. 34At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, The earth is going to swallow us too! 35And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense. 36The LORD said to Moses, 37 Tell Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, to take the censers out of the smoldering remains and scatter the coals some distance away, for the censers are holy 38 the censers of the men who sinned at the cost of their lives. Hammer the censers into sheets to overlay the altar, for they were presented before the LORD and have become holy. Let them be a sign to the Israelites. 39So Eleazar the priest collected the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned up, and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar, 40as the LORD directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense before the LORD, or he would become like Korah and his followers. PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 38 CW p. 81 SECOND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 1For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3They all ate the same spiritual food 4and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert. 6Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry. 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 9We should not test the Lord, as some of them did and were killed by snakes. 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did and were killed by the destroying angel. 11These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don t fall! 13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 6

7 VERSE OF THE DAY: John 3:14,15 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. GOSPEL: Luke 13:1-9 Please stand. M: The Gospel according to Luke chapter 13. C: Glory be to you, O Lord! 1Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 6Then he told this parable: A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. 7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, For three years now I ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil? 8 Sir, the man replied, leave it alone for one more year, and I ll dig around it and fertilize it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down. The congregation stands for the reading of the Gospel, and speaks words of acclamation out of respect for the words of Christ, our King. After the reading of the Gospel: M: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ! 7

8 APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, The holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Public confession is faith s response to God s saving Word. The tradition that each of the apostles wrote a line of the creed is not verifiable. But while the apostles did not produce it, this creed s roots and teachings are certainly apostolic. Be seated. 9 CREATE IN ME Please stand. This ancient song comes from Psalm 51, a psalm of King David. David wrote this psalm after the prophet Nathan confronted him with his sin of adultery with Bathsheba and his murder of her husband, Uriah. (2 Samuel 11 & 12) David repented of his sin and offered up this prayer to the LORD. Be seated. OFFERING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Please stand. 9

10 LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 11 REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS Our Shut-Ins Allan Hasenjager, Betty Kiehnau, & Tom McDonald. Jason Staats & Family, that the Lord would bless Jason and the rest of his division with safe and excellent training before they deploy to Afghanistan. And that the Lord bless and keep Nicole and the children while Jason serves our country and the people of Afghanistan. Easton Grasse, (young grandson of David & Tamie Grasse), that the Lord would continue to bless Easton s progress with taking food by mouth so that he can move off of the feeding tube soon. Diann Ehlers, who has been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (a bone marrow disease) and is undergoing treatment. Darlene Krauel, prayers of thanksgiving that she has been told the cancer is gone, that the Lord keep the cancer away and bless her continued recovery and further treatments. ANNOUNCEMENTS Spring Cleanup (Indoors) We ll do some spring cleaning inside church on April 4. We ll start before Ladies Aide whenever you can arrive. We ll continue work after the meeting if anything else is needed for if other has the time. Zion Potato Pancake Dinner April 13 in their fellowship hall. All funds raised will go toward school building improvements such as remodeling school bathrooms. Women s Mission Rally All women of our congregation have been invited to attend a local Lutheran Women s Mission Society (LWMS) rally on April 6. It is an opportunity to gather together with fellow sisters in Christ of our WELS congregations to hear about amazing work God is doing in our country and about in the field of mission work. It s also a wonderful time of spiritual renewal and fellowship. It will be held at Trinity Lutheran Early Child Care Center 800 Augustine St., Kaukauna, WI On-site registration begins at 8:00 am with the rally beginning at 9:00 am and running until 12:30 pm. If you would like to attend, please signup on the registration sheet on the shelf below the mailboxes. We will plan to carpool down. New Beginnings Collection Please take a bottle home and fill it with your change, or whatever money you want to help support New Beginnings a program and home that provides care, support and housing for young pregnant women who are escaping bad, even dangerous situations in their lives. The collection will end on Sunday, April 21 (Easter). Family Feud - to - Family Fueled One of the main goals of the game show Family Feud is to create feuding within families. Isn t there enough of that in the world already? Join us as we fill our hearts and minds with the healing and motivation only God can give. In this way we ll learn to move from Family Feud to a Family Fueled to serve God and others. Sunday mornings at 9:00am beginning March 10. Parenting Seminars Monthly parenting seminars began February 23! The basics: Dates) Feb March 16 - April 13 - May 11 - June 8. Time) 10:00 am - Noon. Refreshments will be provided.
