FORWARD FOCUSED FAITH 5TH SUNDAY IN LENT St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church 4911 Brauer Road - Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235
Welcome to our worship service! In our services here at St. John we have two chief goals. Our first goal is to be built up in our faith through the only means God has given to us, the gospel found in God s Word and Sacraments. Our second goal is to give praise to God Father, Son, & Holy Spirit alone. As we seek these two goals we are equipped to carry out our mission Come, Grow, Live, and Share Christ! May the Lord bless our worship today. Guests We welcome you to St. John with joy in our hearts that you chose to worship with us today! Instructions for worship are found in the bulletin and will be announced by pastor. There is a cry room in the back of church available for parents to calm and care for their children during the service. Bathrooms are located downstairs and to the left. A changing table is available in the women s bathroom. Should you have any other questions, please speak with one of the ushers or with pastor. Today s Service The order of service is called Divine Service 1. The setting found in this bulletin was arranged by Pastor Michael Schultz. The hymns and psalm today can be found in the red hymnal: Christian Worship. Communion at St. John At St. John we practice membership communion. That means we invite to the altar those who have expressed their agreement with the biblical teachings of this church through current membership in our congregation or other WELS or ELS congregations. Some might have questions about our practice since not every Christian congregation today practices Close Communion. For this reason, we sincerely invite you to schedule a visit with our pastor so that he may talk with you about any questions or concerns you may have. He will be more than happy to sit down with you. Use time before the service to prepare for Communion by turning to page 156 in the front of the hymnal. 3 DIVINE SERVICE I OPENING HYMN: Your Works, Not Mine, O Christ CW 401 INVOCATION Please stand. M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. The name of the triune God and the sign of the cross remind worshipers of their baptisms. CONFESSION M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression Lord, have mercy is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian church. 3
ABSOLUTION M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. The use of the keys is that special power and right which Christ gave to his church on earth: to forgive the sins of penitent sinners (The Small Catechism, First: What is the use of the keys?). See John 20:21-23 GLORY BE TO GOD C: Refrain Gloria in Excelsis M: Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father. We worship you, we give you thanks, We praise you for your glory. Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. Glory to God in the Highest has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century. C: Refrain M: Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: Have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of God the Father: Receive our prayer, receive our prayer. C: Refrain M: For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, With the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. C: Refrain 4
SALUTATION M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY This greeting has deep roots in Christian worship and marks the beginning of the Word section. M: Let us pray. Eternal God and Father, help us to remember Jesus, who obeyed your will and bore the cross for our salvation that through his anguish, pain, and death we may receive forgiveness of sins and inherit eternal life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Be seated. THE WORD FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 43: This is what the LORD says he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, 17who drew out the chariots and horses, the army and reinforcements together, and they lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick: 18 Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. 20 The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the desert and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, 21 the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. 22 Yet you have not called upon me, O Jacob, you have not wearied yourselves for me, O Israel. 23 You have not brought me sheep for burnt offerings, nor honored me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with grain offerings nor wearied you with demands for incense. 24 You have not bought any fragrant calamus for me, or lavished on me the fat of your sacrifices. But you have burdened me with your sins and wearied me with your offenses. 5
PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 73 CW p. 94 SECOND LESSON: Philippians 3:7-14 7But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. 10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. 12Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. VERSE OF THE DAY: Mark 10:45 The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. GOSPEL: Luke 20:9-19 Please stand. M: The Gospel according to Luke chapter 20. C: Glory be to you, O Lord! 9He went on to tell the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time. 10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away emptyhanded. 11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out. The congregation stands for the reading of the Gospel, and speaks words of acclamation out of respect for the words of Christ, our King. 6
13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him. 14 But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. This is the heir, they said. Let s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours. 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. When the people heard this, they said, May this never be! 17Jesus looked directly at them and asked, Then what is the meaning of that which is written: The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone? 18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed. 19The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people. After the reading of the Gospel: M: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ! NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. Public confession is faith s response to God s saving Word. Christians composed the Nicene Creed in the fourth century to defend the Bible s teachings that both Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are true God, equal to the Father in one eternal, undivided Trinity. 7
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Be seated. SERMON HYMN: Fight the Good Fight CW 457:1-2 CHILDREN S MESSAGE: In front of the sanctuary SERMON HYMN: Fight the Good Fight CW 457:3-4 SERMON TEXT: Philippians 3:7-14 THE GOAL OF GETTING RID OF GARBAGE 8
CREATE IN ME Please stand. This ancient song comes from Psalm 51, a psalm of King David. David wrote this psalm after the prophet Nathan confronted him with his sin of adultery with Bathsheba and his murder of her husband, Uriah. (2 Samuel 11 & 12) David repented of his sin and offered up this prayer to the LORD. Be seated. OFFERING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Please stand. 9
LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE SACRAMENT PREFACE M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is good and right so to do. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who brought the gift of salvation to all people by his death on the tree of the cross, so that the devil, who overcame up by a tree would in turn by a tree be overcome. Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: The words of the Preface mark the beginning of the Sacrament section of the service and lift the worshipers hearts in praise. The opening sentences are among the oldest in the Christian liturgy. 10
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus Sanctus means holy. Used possibly as early as the second century, this song was in wide use among Christians in worship by the fourteenth century. WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. 11
LAMB OF GOD Agnus Dei Jesus is God s Lamb (Agnus Dei), who was offered as a sacrifice for sin once and for all. Be seated. DISTRIBUTION DISTRIBUTION HYMN: My Song Is Love Unknown CW
SONG OF SIMEON Please stand. Nunc Dimittis The Nunc Dimittis ( Now dismiss ) is also known as the Song of Simeon. Through God s Word and Sacrament, we have seen Jesus Christ, and like Simeon we find divine peace and comfort through faith in the Savior. M: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. C: And his mercy endures forever. M: We give you thanks, O Lord, for the foretaste of the heavenly banquet that you have given us to eat and to drink in this sacrament. Through this gift you have fed our faith, nourished our hope, and strengthened our love. By your Spirit help us to live as your holy people until that day when you will receive us as your guests at the wedding supper of the Lamb, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 13
BLESSING M: The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The LORD look on you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen.
