And the people became impatient on the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses, Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food. 6 Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. 7 And the people came to Moses and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. So Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the LORD said to Moses, Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live. 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

The Second Reading 1 Timothy 2:1-6 1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. LUTHERAN HOUR MINISTRIES Lutheran Hour - WOAI (1200 AM) on Sunday mornings at 6:00 a.m. The Alpha Course The Alpha course is an evangelistic course which seeks to introduce the basics of the Christian faith through a series of talks and discussions. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is a basic tool to share Jesus with someone who has no idea of who God is, or Jesus or all the other stuff. It is also a refresher for your life and everyone is welcome, so invite a friend to join you. It is described by its organizers as "an opportunity to explore the meaning of life". Alpha courses are being run in churches, homes, workplaces, prisons, universities and a wide variety of other locations. The course began in Britain and is being run around the world by various Christian denominations. We started this course at Redeemer Lutheran on January 6th. There is no cost for the materials. Lectionary Summary: Numbers 21:4 9, 1 Timothy 2:1 6, or James 1:22 27, John 16:23 30 (31 33) - The Father Answers Our Prayers Because of Jesus - Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you (John 16:23) - To pray in Jesus name is to pray as one who has been baptized. For it is in the water that He put His name upon you, claiming you as His own, making you a son of God with access to the Father. By His incarnation and crucifixion, our Lord Jesus broke through the barrier of sin which separated us from God, opening a portal to the Father. To

8 - 8 - pray in Jesus name is to pray with faith in Him as the one Mediator between God and men, who gave Himself a ransom for all (1 Tim. 2:1 6). Like Moses in the wilderness, Jesus is our go-between and intercessor before the throne of heaven. He was lifted up for us on the cross that we might be saved and restored to fellowship with the Father (Num. 21:4 9). Looking into this perfect teaching of liberty (James 1:22 27) we pray with boldness and confidence as dear children of God. Stewardship Sentence: 1 Timothy 2:5-6 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all. To be ransomed is to be bought back, to be purchased. We belong to God fair and square, not only because He created us, but now doubly so in that we are ransomed. We belong to God: that s the beginning of thankfulness and generosity. Luther Quote:
