3 February 24, 2019 Page 2 #566 Please bring health, healing and hope to those in our community who are sick especially Francesca Tortora, Jonathon Capriotti, Emily Capriotti, Dakota Schick, Marianne McVeigh, Don Goletz, Mary Disimone, Ann Nucciarone, we also ask you Lord, to watch over all those with incurable autoimmune diseases and for all those who are afflicted with MS, CF, Lou Gehrig s disease, for those who suffer from Alzheimer disease, dementia, addictions, and their families. God of all consolation, give life and health to our sisters and brothers for whom we pray in your Holy Name. Amen. The Season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6th. Ashes will be distributed at the 9:00 Mass, Noon Mass (new this year), 4:00 Service and 7:00 Mass. Reflections First Reading: I Samuel 26:2,7-9,12-13,22-23 The story of suspense and reverence causes it to be a well known one. Even though David has the perfect chance to kill his enemy Saul, he does not because Saul is the Lord s anointed. Second Reading: I Corinthians 15:45-49 Paul teaches that just as we have borne the image of Adam, the earthly one, so we shall also bear the image of Jesus, the heavenly one. Gospel: Luke 6:27-38 Jesus speaks to His would-be disciples, telling them how to react to persecution. Love your enemies is a radical proposal, along with others in this section. Parish Rosary Program Thank you to everyone who handed in their tally sheets for praying the rosary. So far we have prayed the rosary 244 times. Keep up the good work! Remember to pray one decade for St. William the Abbot Parish. If you haven t started, it is not too late. There are flyers and tally sheets on the table near the bulletins. Our next group rosary will be next Saturday, March 2, 8:30AM. All are welcome. This weekend is Pledge Sunday for the Annual Catholic Appeal throughout the Diocese of Trenton. Each year the Bishop seeks the support of all of the members of the diocese to further the work of our ministries. Each of us can share in all we do with a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Our single Act of Faith propels the works of love that build up our Church. You make that happen with a generous gift to the ACA. This year St. William the Abbot s share of the goal is $27,206. Which is the same as the last two years. As the people of the Diocese of Trenton, you have an opportunity to help others see Christ working in our midst. I ask you to take a moment and truly reflect on any help you can give. We truly need everyone to participate. This year we again are striving to reach our goal of 7 million dollars. As a parish we have reached our goal the past three years. Please help us to do that again. Remember some of the money raised does come back to St. William the Abbot. Thank you!

5 February 24, 2019 Page 4 #566 Cursillo Corner Want to grow deeper in your relationship with God? Want to rediscover the sense of Christian community? Participate in the joyful experience of Cursillo. Visit our website at Everyone is invited to join us in fellowship at Leaders School (we are all leaders in Christianity) Saturday, March 16th, in the All Purpose Room at Epiphany Church at 10AM, and learn more about the beautiful Cursillo Movement. Why do we go to Church? First, because it is the House of the Lord and we, as a guest in the House of the Lord, go there to pray and to thank Him for all the Blessings He has given us. Perhaps to pray for a loved one who may be ill or to be a part of a Church community. Jesus Christ is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, therefore the Church could be considered His castle and we are His guests as He welcomes us with open arms. When we are a guest in a home, do we immediately leave with food in our mouths, without saying goodbye or thank you? Then why do we do it in our Church? We are guests in the House of the Lord, Holy Communion is the meal and if we wait for the blessing after the meal, that is our dessert. Please stay to the end of Mass and do not leave the Church before the Blessing and dismissal from the Celebrant of the Mass. Staying to the end of Mass not only shows respect to Jesus Christ, the Celebrant and the company of your parishioners, it also demonstrates respect from You. 6 February 24, 2019 Page 5 #566 Saints of the Week Saint Ethelbert, Feast day February 24 King of Kent Ethelbert, born in 560AD, became King and extended his power to all of England. He married a Christian princess, Bertha, who was the daughter of the Frankish King. This resulted in the first introduction of Christianity into Anglo-Saxon England since her father insisted that his daughter be free to practice her faith in England. When St. Augustine of Canterbury arrived in England he was accorded a pleasant welcome by Ethelfert who was still a heathen. Inspired by the example of his wife s, he converted and was baptized on Pentecost of that same year. Ethelbert became the first Christian English King and therefore gave his full support to the cause of Christ in his realm. He was constantly concerned to promote the welfare of his people. Ethelbert enacted wholesome laws which were held in esteem in succeeding ages in England. He abolished the worship of idols throughout his kingdom and turned their temples into churches or shut them down. Ethelbert built a monastery outside of Canterbury and he backed St. Augustine in establishing dioceses at Rochester and London. He died on February 24, 616AD. Saint Gabriel of Lady of Sorrows, Feast day February 27 Paton of Youth and Clerics Born in 1838, this saint of modern times was originally named Francis after the great saint of his native city in Assisi. He attended the Jesuit college of Spoleto, where he was a great favorite with his fellow students and professors. Francis was fastidious in manner and dress, and was fond of literature and theater. However, he decided to leave the world after being miraculously cured from two bouts of illness. He was guided by Our Lady into the Passionist Institute, where he took the name Gabriel and became an Apostle of her Sorrows. At twenty-four years of age he died of tuberculosis, having already attained to a heroic degree of sanctity by a life of self-denial and great devotion to Our Lord s Passion. Gabriel was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in His life was without any miraculous event; and after his death many miracles occurred at his tomb in Italy. Saint Cunegundes, Empress Patroness of Lithuania & Poland Cunegundes was born into royalty and raised in a religious household. She later married Henry II, the Duke of Bavaria, who shared her faith. Henry became king of Germany. Twelve years later, Pope Benedict VIII crowned Henry and Cunegundes, emperor and empress of the Holy Roman Empire. At that time, the morals of some of the clergy were suspect. With Cunegundes support, King Henry tried his best to reform those who had strayed from their vows. Cunegundes influenced Henry in other areas as well. She convinced him to found the cathedral and monastery in Bamberg which became a Bavarian bishopric. On her own, Cunegundes founded a Benedictine monastery at Kaufungen. Then King Henry heard that she had been unfaithful. Cunegundes denied the charge and to prove it she walked across hot ploughshares. Because she remained unharmed it was considered a sign from God. Her husband never doubted her again. After King Henry died, Cunegundes entered the monastery and devoted herself to prayer and caring for the sick. On her deathbed she insisted on being buried in her simple nun s habit showing her devotion to God. She died in the year 1040.
