ORGAN VOLUNTARY: Improvisation All remain seated as the Choir sings CHORAL INTROIT: Direct us, O Lord D IRECT us, O Lord, in all our doings with thy most gracious favor, and further us with thy continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy Name, and finally, by thy mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Words: A Collect for Guidance, The Book of Common Prayer (1979), p. 832 Music: Chris Biemesderfer (b. 1958) All stand and sing HYMN 31: Most Holy God, the Lord of heaven Dunedin The Officiant says THE OPENING SENTENCES

THE CONFESSION OF SIN AND ABSOLUTION The Officiant addresses the people, saying Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. All then kneel and say LMIGHTY and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have A followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Officiant stands and says The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen. THE PRECES All stand. The Cantor and Choir sing V. O Lord, open thou our lips. R. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. V. O God, make speed to save us. R. O Lord, make haste to help us. V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. V. Praise ye the Lord. R. The Lord s name be praised. All sit. The Choir sings PSALM 19 Cæli ennarant Chants: Chris Biemesderfer (b. 1958) 1 The heavens declare the glory of God; * and the firmament showeth his handy-work. 2 One day telleth another; * and one night certifieth another. 3 There is neither speech nor language; * but their voices are heard among them. 4 Their sound is gone out into all lands; * and their words into the ends of the world. 5 In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun; * which cometh forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a giant to run his course. 6 It goeth forth from the uttermost part of the heaven, and runneth about unto the end of it again; * and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

7 The law of the LORD is an undefiled law, converting the soul; * the testimony of the LORD is sure, and giveth wisdom unto the simple. 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, and rejoice the heart; * the commandment of the LORD is pure, and giveth light unto the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, and endureth for ever; * the judgments of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; * sweeter also than honey, and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them is thy servant taught; * and in keeping of them there is great reward. 12 Who can tell how oft he offendeth? * O cleanse thou me from my secret faults. 13 Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the dominion over me; * so shall I be undefiled, and innocent from the great offence. 14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be alway acceptable in thy sight, * O LORD, my strength and my redeemer. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen. PSALM 46 Deus noster refugium Chant: after Martin Luther ( ) 1 God is our hope and strength, * a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be moved, * and though the hills be carried into the midst of the sea. 3 Though the waters thereof rage and swell, * and though the mountains shake at the tempest of the same. 4 There is a river, the streams thereof make glad the city of God; * the holy place of the tabernacle of the most Highest. 5 God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed; * God shall help her, and that right early. 6 The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are moved; * but God hath shewed his voice, and the earth shall melt away. 7 The Lord of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our refuge. 8 O come hither, and behold the works of the Lord, * what destruction he hath brought upon the earth. 9 He maketh wars to cease in all the world; * he breaketh the bow, and knappeth the spear in sunder, and burneth the chariots in the fire. 10 Be still then, and know that I am God: * I will be exalted among the heathen, and I will be exalted in the earth. 11 The Lord of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen. THE FIRST LESSON: 1 John 2:3-11 ND hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, A and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. MAGNIFICAT from Evening Service in A All remain seated as the Choir sings My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Words: The Song of Mary, Luke 1:46-55, with Gloria Patri Music: William H. Harris ( )

THE SECOND LESSON: John 8:12-19 HEN spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk T in darkness, but shall have the light of life. The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true. Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go. Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man. And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also. NUNC DIMITTIS from Evening Service in A All remain seated as the Choir sings Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Words: The Song of Simeon, Luke 2:29-32, with Gloria Patri Music: William H. Harris ( ) THE APOSTLES CREED All stand and sing I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE SALUTATION AND LESSER LITANY V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. Let us pray. R. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. The Cantor and Choir sing The people kneel. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. The Choir sings THE SUFFRAGES The Cantor and Choir sing V. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. R. And grant us thy salvation. V. O Lord, save the State. R. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. V. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. R. And make thy chosen people joyful. V. O Lord, save thy people. R. And bless thine inheritance. V. Give peace in our time, O Lord. R. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. V. O God, make clean our hearts within us. R. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

THE COLLECTS The Collect of the Day O The Cantor sings the following collects; the Choir sings Amen. God, the strength of all who put their trust in thee: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because through the weakness of our mortal nature, we can do no good thing without thee, give us the help of thy grace, that in keeping thy commandments we may please thee both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. A Collect for Peace O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. A Collect for Aid against Perils L IGHTEN our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. INTERCESSIONS AND THANKSGIVINGS All say THE GENERAL THANKSGIVING LMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty A thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. A PRAYER OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM The Officiant says LMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication A unto thee; and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. The Officiant says THE GRACE HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, T and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

All stand and sing HYMN 609: Where cross the crowded ways of life Gardiner All sit for THE GREETING AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The Officiant says THE OFFERTORY SENTENCE As the alms are collected, the Choir sings THE ANTHEM: Dear Lord and Father of mankind D EAR Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways! Reclothe us in our rightful mind, in purer lives thy service find, in deeper reverence, praise. In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word, rise up and follow thee. Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still, small voice of calm. Words: John Greenleaf Whittier ( ) Music: Charles Hubert Hastings Parry ( ) THE CLOSING PRAYER AND BLESSING All stand. 9 MUSICAL NOTES Chris Biemesderfer (b. 1958) was raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he studied piano and organ in his youth. For many years, Biemesderfer sang professionally in and around Washington, DC, including five years at Washington National Cathedral, under Richard W. Dirksen and Douglas Major, and a decade at Christ Church, Georgetown, under Michael Lindstrom. He developed an interest in composition at an early age and began writing anthems for church as a teenager. Biemesderfer reports that his composition was positively influenced by his tenures at both the Cathedral and Christ Church. During his time at the latter, he collaborated with Michael Lindstrom in creating The Christ Church Psalter. Biemesderfer studied astronomy at university. Before his retirement, he held numerous posts in the world of scientific research. Biemesderfer and his wife, Rebecca, live in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The setting of the Preces and Responses, composed for the Choir of Christ Church in 2017, is the work of Luke Frels (b. 1974), one of three tenors in the Choir since A native of Victoria, Texas, Frels earned a bachelor s degree in music education and choral music at Oklahoma State University. He later completed a master s degree in vocal performance at San Jose State University, where he studied with Joseph Frank. Frels began teaching and singing professionally in One of the most important figures in twentieth century English church music, William Henry Harris, affectionately known as Doc H to the choristers who sang under his direction, was, during his lengthy career, more widely recognized as an exceptional organist and choir trainer than a prolific composer. That said, Harris wrote a number of well-known, finely-crafted works for the church among them Faire is the Heaven, for unaccompanied double choir; the Communion Service in F; and the elegant, yet very direct Evening Service in A, sung during this liturgy. The Hound of Heaven, for baritone soloist, chorus, and orchestra, is one of his finest large-scale works. His compositions for solo organ include the masterly Four Short Pieces (1938), from which this evening s closing voluntary is drawn. Harris was born in London on March 28, He showed extraordinary talent early on, serving as a chorister and organist in his youth and earning the rank of Fellow of the Royal College of Organists (FRCO) in his early teens. From , he held the post of Organist at St. David s Cathedral in Wales. In 1899, Harris matriculated at the Royal College of Music, where his teachers included Walter Parratt, Walford Davies, and Charles Wood. In the early 1900s, Harris held several assistant organist posts, including at London s Temple Church and, beginning in 1911, at Lichfield Cathedral. From , he served as organist at New College, Oxford. It was around this time that he began turning out many of his most important compositions, beginning with the aforementioned The Hound of Heaven, in 1919, and the choral masterpiece Faire is the Heaven, in In 1921, Harris joined the faculty of the Royal College of Music, where he taught organ and harmony. Other organ posts ensued: Christ (Roman Catholic) Church, Oxford ( ) and St. George s Chapel, Windsor Castle ( ). In his later years, Harris served in two administrative posts: President of the Royal College of Organists, , and Director of Music Studies at the Royal School of Church Music, Among Harris most important late works is the ravishing Bring us, O Lord God (1959) for unaccompanied double choir. Harris died in Petersfield on September 6, NOTE: The next service of Choral Evensong will take place on Sunday, March 3, at 5:00 p.m. Evensong will continue on first, third, and fifth Sundays through May. A reception follows each service. Please join us.

The Daily Office: Did you know that Christ Church is one of a relatively small number of parishes to faithfully keep the Daily Office throughout the week year round? An ancient and disciplined approach to prayer, the Daily Office provides an ordered way for the Church Universal to pray without ceasing. It adds a layer of depth and consistency to our lives as it helps us connect with God on a day to day basis. Since the dawn of Christianity, worship has been a daily not just a weekly affair. In the Middle Ages, monastic communities observed seven offices: Matins, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline. At the English Reformation, Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury and author of the first Book of Common Prayer, made a deliberate effort to simplify the offices so that clergy and laity alike could routinely participate in them. The number was reduced from seven to two: Morning Prayer, based on the medieval office of Matins together with elements of Prime, and Evening Prayer, essentially an amalgamation of Vespers and Compline. As a whole, the liturgies were revised to highlight the importance of the recitation of psalms and the reading of Holy Scripture in course, qualities that give the Anglican office its distinctive character. The 1979 Book of Common Prayer restored Sext (Noonday Prayer) and Compline as optional offices. opening, all meetings and activities scheduled to take place before the delayed opening time are canceled. All activities set to begin after the delayed opening time will occur as scheduled. Except in extreme conditions, daily services will take place as usual. On Sundays, while individual activities Adult Forum, Sunday School, meetings, etc. may be canceled, worship services will take place as scheduled except in very extreme conditions. Parishioners are urged to use their best judgment as to whether they can get to and from the church safely. At Christ Church, all are invited to gather for Morning (7:30 a.m.), Noonday (12:00 p.m.), and Evening (5:30 p.m.) Prayer Monday through Friday in the Chapel of Saint Jude. Morning Prayer is also said each Saturday, at 7:30 a.m. As the holy season of Lent approaches, the clergy encourage you to consider committing yourself to attendance at one or more of these brief, beautiful liturgies each day or each week. Inclement Weather Policy: For the most up-to-date information on activities at Christ Church, call the Parish Office: , or visit the parish website. During periods of inclement weather, a liberal leave policy will be in effect for staff. So, while the parish may be open, individual activities, meetings, etc. may still be canceled due to a staff member s inability to get to the church safely. Staff will be available via . On weekdays, Christ Church adheres to the schedule of DC Public Schools (DCPS). If they are closed, the parish is closed and all meetings and activities, including the Thrift Shop, are canceled. If DCPS announces a delayed
