The Officiant says THE OPENING SENTENCES THE CONFESSION OF SIN AND ABSOLUTION The Officiant addresses the people, saying Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. All then kneel and say LMIGHTY and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have A followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Officiant stands and says The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen. THE PRECES All stand. The Cantor and Choir sing V. O Lord, open thou our lips. R. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. V. O God, make speed to save us. R. O Lord, make haste to help us. V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. V. Praise ye the Lord. R. The Lord s name be praised. All sit. The Choir sings PSALM 114 In exitu Israel Chant: George Mursell Garrett ( ) 1 When Israel came out of Egypt, * and the house of Jacob from among the strange people, 2 Judah was his sanctuary, * and Israel his dominion. 3 The sea saw that, and fled; * Jordan was driven back. 4 The mountains skipped like rams, * and the little hills like young sheep.

5 What aileth thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? * and thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back? 6 Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams? * and ye little hills, like young sheep? 7 Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the LORD: * at the presence of the God of Jacob; 8 Who turned the hard rock into a standing water, * and the flint-stone into a springing well. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen. PSALM 115 Non nobis, Domine Chant: Edwin Edwards ( ) 1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy Name give the praise; * for thy loving mercy, and for thy truth s sake. 2 Wherefore shall the heathen say, * Where is now their God? 3 As for our God, he is in heaven: * he hath done whatsoever pleased him. 4 Their idols are silver and gold, * even the work of men s hands. 5 They have mouths, and speak not; * eyes have they, and see not. 6 They have ears, and hear not; * noses have they, and smell not. 7 They have hands, and handle not; feet have they, and walk not; * neither speak they through their throat. 8 They that make them are like unto them; * and so are all such as put their trust in them. 9 But thou, house of Israel, trust thou in the LORD; * he is their helper and defender. 10 Ye house of Aaron, put your trust in the LORD; * he is their helper and defender. 11 Ye that fear the LORD, put your trust in the LORD; * he is their helper and defender. 12 The LORD hath been mindful of us, and he shall bless us; * even he shall bless the house of Israel, he shall bless the house of Aaron. 13 He shall bless them that fear the LORD, * both small and great. 14 The LORD shall increase you more and more, * you and your children. 15 Ye are the blessed of the LORD, * who made heaven and earth.

16 All the whole heavens are the LORD s; * the earth hath he given to the children of men. 17 The dead praise not thee, O LORD, * neither all they that go down into silence. 18 But we will praise the LORD, * from this time forth for evermore. Praise the LORD. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen. THE FIRST LESSON: Hebrews 6:17 7:10 W HEREIN God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him. MAGNIFICAT from Evening Service in F All remain seated as the Choir sings My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away.

He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Words: The Song of Mary, Luke 1:46-55, with Gloria Patri Music: Harold W. Friedell ( ) THE SECOND LESSON: John 4:27-42 ESUS disciples came, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? J or, Why talkest thou with her? The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours. And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. And many more believed because of his own word; And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. NUNC DIMITTIS from Evening Service in F All remain seated as the Choir sings Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Words: The Song of Simeon, Luke 2:29-32, with Gloria Patri Music: Harold W. Friedell ( ) THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, All stand and sing

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Amen. A Collect for Peace O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Amen. INTERCESSIONS AND THANKSGIVINGS All say THE GENERAL THANKSGIVING LMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty A thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. A PRAYER OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM The Officiant says A LMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee; and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

MUSICAL NOTES Born in Queens, New York, in 1905, Harold W. Friedell was one of the most prominent American organists and church musicians of the twentieth century. He was also a highly regarded scholar and educator, teaching at both the Juilliard School and Union Theological Seminary s School of Sacred Music. Friedell served as Organist and Master of the Choir at St. Bartholomew s Church, Park Avenue, from 1946 until his sudden death in His compositional output includes works for choir, organ, and orchestra, as well as hymn tunes, descants, and music for solo voice. Friedell s Evening Service in F, which includes a rhythmic and, at times, raucous setting of the Magnificat and an utterly sublime setting of the Nunc dimittis, was completed in Sir Edward C. Bairstow was born in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England in He studied organ and theory at the University of Durham, receiving the bachelor of music degree in 1894 and a doctorate in music in Bairstow held several church posts in London, Wigan, and Leeds, before his 1913 appointment as Organist of York Minster, where he served until his death in His compositions, most of which were written for the church, include 29 choral anthems; an assortment of morning and evening canticles, and mass settings in three keys; as well as Anglican chants, hymn tunes, and a cantata. This evening s anthem, Save us, O Lord, is a moving setting of one of the most familiar antiphons from the monastic office of Compline. NOTE: The next service of Choral Evensong will take place on Sunday, February 3, at 5:00 p.m. Evensong will continue on first, third, and fifth Sundays through May. A reception follows each service.
