RIDGELAND AVE. PALOS HEIGHTS, IL WWW. SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG CHRIST IS RISEN! The end of our academic year in Bible Study finds us at the beginning of the Book of Exodus. Moses is instructed by God to ask Pharaoh s permission for the Hebrew people to exit Egypt in order to worship their God. It seemed like a reasonable request, yet Pharaoh would not grant them leave. As a result, God sent a series of plagues to Egypt in order to force Pharaoh s hand. After each plague, Pharaoh would lament and waiver. The suffering of his people was becoming too much for him to assuage. Yet, his pride, which had hardened his heart, would not allow him to give in to God s request. Even after the tenth plague, which killed all the first-born of Egypt, including Pharaoh s son, he momentarily let the Hebrews go, only to chase them down with his chariots. What is most interesting, however, in our study of this text is Pharaoh s refusal to even acknowledge the Hebrews right to worship. This is how the reading describes the event: Afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, Thus says the LORD God of Israel: Let My people go, that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness. And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know Annual Greek Festival July 9th & 10th, 2016

Athletics And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. the LORD, nor will I let Israel go. So they said, The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go three days journey into the desert and sacrifice to the LORD our God, lest He fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword. Then the king of Egypt said to them, Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people from their work? Get back to your labor. (Exodus 5:1-4) First of all, we notice God s desire for His people to worship Him and to hold a feast to Him in the wilderness. Now, one would say that God wanted His people to rest. Others may interpret this demand as a selfserving precedent for institutionalized religion. However, the mandate to rest is secondary to His clear desire that He wants us to worship Him. The institution of the Church as a worship community was sanctioned by the prophets and by Christ Himself Who testified to the simple divine command to worship Him. Christ said to the Samaritan woman: the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:23-24) God wants us to worship Him simply because He wills it. In His infinite wisdom as our Creator, He commands us to do what we need to do, and in this case, to worship Him in spirit and in truth. The worship of God involves removing ourselves from the world. We see that God demands that the people of Israel travel to the wilderness to worship Him. God wished for His people to place themselves on holy ground outside of the land of Egypt just as we place ourselves in the holy realm of our church grounds. However, this physical separation from the land of Egypt speaks more to the separation from sin that is required for true worship. If we are to worship God in spirit and in truth we must be true to our repentance and true to the Comforter, the Holy Spirit which cleanses, sanctifies us, and prays within us. What I found most intriguing in the passage, however, is Pharaoh s reaction to Moses s demand. The land of Egypt had greatly benefited from the God of the Israelites. All its prosperity had been created by the blessings of God through Joseph and his people. In the four hundred years that passed after Joseph s death, the Pharaohs had enslaved the descendants of their benefactors and have now forgotten the benevolent role that their God had played in the survival and prosperity of their kingdom. So now this Pharaoh replies to Moses: I do not know Your God. Get back to your labor. This reaction by Pharaoh is so reminiscent of our time. We can hear Pharaoh s voice every time we ask our employer for the day off for religious purposes; every time we tell our kid s coach to not schedule a game on Sunday morning; every time we ask our school for an excused absence for a certain holiday; every time that our clients expect us to serve them at all times, including the Lord s day; every time our relatives or friends schedule a party at the same time as church; every time we succumb to the pressure of always being on call, on task, on schedule with everything except our duty to worship God. 2 The Voice

3 In the case of Moses, when Pharaoh refused to let them worship, God sent the ten plagues upon him and his people. That is because the Hebrews were helpless and powerless against Pharaoh. God had to fight for their rights. In our case, we, ourselves, need to fight for our rights. Let us tell our kid s coach or our employer about our priorities in due time. Let us not shop on Sunday morning so that there will be no need for a business to hire people to accommodate us at that time. Let us be aware of feasts and fasts when we schedule a party or a family gathering. There will be a time, and in some cases, that time is here, that we are left without power or choice. That is when the Lord will fight for us, and what a terrible hour that will be when our Lord will force His will upon those who resist Him and His desire for us to worship Him. The ten plagues of Egypt are a foreshadowing of the end times, the coming of the apocalypse and the Lord s return. Let us hope we do not see those days. That is all the more reason that we must defend our right to worship our Lord, on the Lord s Day, on the feast days that the Lord calls us to partake of Holy Communion, to feast and worship Him in spirit and in truth. Amen. Truly He is Risen! Fr. Tilemahos STEWARDSHIP 2016 Stewardship 2016 Progress Report As of May 25th, 2016 Pledged Stewards: 240 Average Stewardship: $372 Amount of Stewardship donated: $89,280 STEWARDS 2016-APRIL 21ST-MAY 25TH Orthodox Christian Stewardship is a way of life, which acknowledges accountability, reverence, and responsibility before God. A primary goal of Stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Becoming a Steward begins when we believe in God, to whom we give our love, loyalty and trust and act on those beliefs. As Stewards, we affirm that every aspect of our lives comes as a gift from Him. Stewardship calls on the faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts with which they have been blessed. An Orthodox Christian Steward is an active participant in the life of the Church. The parish encourages all who accept the Orthodox Faith to become practicing Stewards. Each year the Steward is expected to carefully review his or her personal circumstances and make a commitment of time, talent, and treasure to support the Parish and her Ministries, which in turn support the National Ministries of our Archdiocese, Metropolises, and institutions. The Stewardship Committee thanks our 240 Stewards who have fulfilled their pledge for the 2016 year. We wish to express our gratitude for your commitment to the Lord s work through our Church of Saint Spyridon. And to you who have not yet pledged, we ask of you to commit yourself and your family so that the Word of God may continue in His glorious name.
