20 Pope Francis made a Wednesday speech last february defending the rights of indigenous tribes to their ancestral relationship to earth. During the Indigenous Peoples Forum in Rome, the Pope made a brief speech regarding the age-old struggle between development and native Peoples. Francis said that industry must always be aware of, "the protection of the particular characteristics of indigenous Peoples and their territories". The need to protect native territories became especially clear when planning economic activities which may interfere with indigenous cultures and their ancestral relationship to the earth. The Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes in the US have argued that the project would interfere with religious ceremonies around a lake that is sacred ground to them. Citing the United Nations' 1997 Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the pope said that on matters of faith "the right to prior and informed consent (of native peoples) should always prevail." He added a plea for the governments of the world to understand "that indigenous communities are a part of the population to be appreciated and consulted, and whose full participation should be promoted at the local and national level and that societies should not create walls but bridges. We must not allow those which destroy the earth, which destroy the environment and the ecological balance, and which end up destroying the wisdom of Peoples". Lenten: A list of Give-ups Give up resentment and bitterness; turn to forgiveness Give up hatred; return good for evil Give up being negative; be positive Give up complaining; be grateful Give up harsh judgements; think kind thoughts Give up discouragement; be full of hope Give up anger; be more patient Give up jealousy; pray for trust Give up gossiping; control your thoughts Give up sin; turn to virtue 18
21 It is not possible to describe the suffering of the Syrian people with human words. The only effective description of this suffering country is the following: Whoever doesn t believe in Hell, suffice it for him to go there and he will realize what Hell is, said Cardinal Mario Zenari, Apostolic Nuncio in Damascus, who last Saturday, March 25, 2017, celebrated a Mass in the Roman parish of Santa Maria delle Grazie alle Fornaci, of which he took possession. In his homily, the Cardinal turned his thought to martyred Syria: 400,000 dead; two million wounded, among whom many are mutilated; about five million refugees in countries outside of Syria; more than six million internally displaced; more than 600,000 besieged without the possibility of access to humanitarian aid. Thousands of children dead under the bombardments: wounded, mutilated, lacerated in body and in spirit a real and proper slaughter of innocents! Cardinal Zenari stressed that the Pope is constantly kept up to date on what is happening in Syria, and he would like to visit the country, but there are too many risks. He is ready to come, but the issue is that he can t unless there is a minimum of security, be it for him and especially for the people, because if the Pope comes to Syria he can t stay in the Nunciature: he must meet the people, he must meet the crowds, said the Cardinal. He concludes by saying that Public opinion must exert pressure on several governments, because a great danger is that, little by little, these tragedies will be forgotten. - hell on earth 19 You can help...
