3 Bringing the Liturgy home to the Domestic Church: Christmas Novena The word novena is derived from the Latin word novem, meaning nine. Made up of nine days of prayer and meditation, novenas are an ancient tradition that goes back to the Apostles. After the ascension of Jesus into heaven, the apostles, with the Blessed Virgin, prayed for nine days in the upper room. The nine days of prayer at the direction of Jesus led to Pentecost, and this pattern of nine days of prayer is the basis of the novenas that we pray today. A Christmas Novena starts on December 16 and is prayed through December 24. While traditionally the St. Andrew Christmas Anticipation prayer is prayed, you could pray a Memorare, a Hail Mary, an Our Father, a Glory Be, or any prayer that your heart leads you to in order to focus on the birth of the Savior and to dispose ourselves to receive the coming Lord! St. Andrew Christmas Novena or Christmas Novena Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born Of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His blessed Mother. Amen. Sacrament of Penance at St. Philip s December 20 th from7pm to 9PM Before celebrating the Sacrament of Penance, one should prepare themselves with an examination of conscience. An examination of conscience is a prayerful self-reflection on our determine how we may have sinned against God Other Churches Near Us Sacred Heart (Altadena) Monday, December 17 7PM-9PM Holy Family (S. This pink candle is customarily called the "Shepherds Candle," and it represents joy: And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. Dear Lord, Advent is a season of joy. Help me serve you always with a happy heart. Amen. Special Needs Ministry Over the last couple of years, our parish has had the honor of guiding one or two individuals who have special needs through the sacramental process. We would now like to formalize this class; however, we need to determine whether there is a need to actually do so. Many organizations use these numbers when distributing resources, and it's a rewarding, safe opportunity to meet the people in our own neighborhoods. For details see the SFC website: smallfaithcommunities.com The Singles Serving SFC aims to build community among the single professionals in our Parish by organizing monthly volunteer opportunities. Even if you can't join us for this event, we'd love to put you on the mailing list for the future: st.philip.community.groups@gmail.com. New Liturgical Year Cycle C: The Year of the Gospel of Luke The Catholic Church s lectionary of Scripture readings for Mass, the Gospel passage almost every Sunday is taken from St. Luke. In the New Testament we meet the person we call St. Luke only indirectly. We do so primarily through the two books that have traditionally been ascribed to him: the Gospel according to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. These two writings are among the longest and most influential books in the New Testament. Indeed, what we call Luke s Gospel is sometimes described as the most beautiful book ever written. Did You Know? It s the Christmas season, which means children around the archdiocese will be lining up for a picture with Santa and a chance to tell him what they hope to find under their trees this year. The Santa visit is a fun holiday tradition, but it s not a time when parents can let their guard down. Santa and his helpers are usually volunteers and may not have gone through screenings or tests to ensure your child s safety, so it s up to you. Keep an eye on anything happening while your child visits with Santa. Never step away from the action, even for a moment, and don t allow your children to be led away to another room. For a copy of the complete VIRTUS article, Safety for Children AND Santa s Helpers, visit Articles.aspx. Volunteer opportunity to help homeless families We wanted to share a service opportunity to help homeless families. As you know, the homeless situation in the San Fernando Valley is increasing greatly, many individuals and families who are homeless go unnoticed because they are sleeping in their cars or crowded with multiple families in one home or garage. Many of these families have children who will not be getting gifts this Christmas. Please consider volunteering with Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND) this Christmas to help serve homeless families. MEND helps feed and clothe families in need. If you are interested in participating as a group you can donate food, blankets and toys. For more information please call (818) or volunteering@mendpoverty.org. Visit for volunteer opportunities. Women s Retreat Unconditional love is the best love you can give. It is the love Christ has for each one of us, demonstrated profoundly through His Passion, death and Resurrection; it is the love that gazes at us from the altar each day. Come to the mountain at Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center in Sierra Madre. With the women of St. Philip, experience the renewal of God s unconditional love as we reflect on the theme of Be not anxious! Living in the peace of Christ, February 1-3, The suggested donation for this weekend is $250 which includes a $50-deposit, however, NO ONE is turned away regardless of their ability to pay. To reserve your spot simply go to: or contact Jean Bowler (jeanbowler1234@gmail.com or ); Mary Fitzpatrick (wordfitz@aol.com or ); Sheryl Valdez (svaldez@sbcglobal.net or ) 4
