St. John Chrysostom Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:5 TOP PRIORITIES Not everyone who asked Jesus questions was trying to trap him. Some wanted him to explain things that puzzled them. Some were seeking Jesus insights into Jewish law which had developed layers of interpretation since the time of Moses as people strove to be obedient to God s will. There were so many regulations that people sometimes felt burdened by them all. Jesus had shown such freedom in his attitude to the Law that some people felt threatened and thought he was trying to overturn it. Instead, Jesus was trying to bring people back to a fresh observance of the Law that had been lost, and to show that God was fulfilling in him what the Law only pointed toward. The scribe who comes to Jesus seems genuinely to want his opinion. The scribe hears the response, finds that it confirms his own feelings, and replies enthusiastically that he too believes that loving God and neighbor are at the heart of everything. The exchange is likely to have been more than words. As in any conversation between people who find themselves in agreement, there would have been exchanged looks, unspoken understanding, and a sense of acceptance between Jesus and the scribe. It is likely that this interaction, rather than Jesus answer, silenced the onlookers. The moments when words of scripture leap into focus and create an overwhelming Yes! in our hearts and minds can have a powerful effect on our lives. Suddenly, something of which we were only dimly aware becomes crystal-clear. We feel as if we are falling in love again with God with Jesus and hear something deeply personal, something written hundreds of years before we were born but spoken as if they were intended for us here and now.
