1 St. Paul s Episcopal Church The Epistle May 16, 2010 The Life of Galileo Pastor Jim s Message Last Saturday evening I attended a performance of The Life of Galileo, a production held at our local Prospect Theatre downtown. I only heard about it because one of our parishioners, Ron Lane, put up a poster for the play in our Parish Hall. Ron, by the way, takes on several roles in the play. And as I mentioned in the sermon last Sunday, there s a real parallel with the current discussion about creationism. The playwright, Bertolt Brecht, expands the drama beyond the obvious conflict between Galileo and the church of his day, and a literal reading of the Bible. What about the sense of meaning their faith provides to the long-suffering peasants? What about the community of other emerging scientists in the Renaissance? And what about future alliances between science and politics? This is the last week for this play. Tickets are $15. 2 Pentecost languages On May 23 rd we ll celebrate the feast of Pentecost, and I ve found a compelling way to illustrate the diversity of languages Christians use to praise our God. Just before the Greeting of Peace we ll proclaim the Lord s Prayer in many languages. So far we have only two languages spoken for German and Chinese. To refresh your memory of the Lord s Prayer, I suggest this resource: Sunday Attendance Last summer, when we re-started as an Episcopal Church, our Sunday morning attendance at 10:00 was hovering around fifty sometimes more, sometimes less. Our Vestry (and others) had careful discussions whether or not it was prudent to restore an 8:00 service in October, since we didn t want to diminish the 10:00 attendance. Last Sunday was Mother s Day, and that meant both a slight increase (children coming with their mothers to St. Paul s) and a slight decrease (children taking their mothers elsewhere for the morning). We had 15 at the early service, and 54 at the 10:00 service. So we re clearly growing in attendance, and in membership as well. It s slow, but it s steady and quite encouraging. And it clearly points out that every person who attends on Sunday is a needed part in making our community vibrant as we sing (at least at 10!) and pray together. A pledge form is made out anonymously, and numbered pledge envelopes are made available to use weekly for your convenience. Thus far we have 33 pledges made for However, we have 52 pledge envelopes in use. This means that many of you are giving faithfully, but have not filled out an anonymous pledge card. We would like to encourage those who are using these envelopes, and who have not turned in a faith pledge form, to consider making a pledge if you are able. The Vestry creates a yearly budget based on what is being pledged from the faith pledge forms, so it greatly helps us to know what St. Paul's financial capabilities are. Thank you. 5 Family News home and doing fine. Dylan Marshburn was born on May 4th to Jason and Julie Marshburn and their daughter Lucy. Mom and son are I would like to thank the thoughtful person responsible for the beautiful roses given to the ladies on Mother's Day. The flower really made me feel special and brought back lovely memories of my childhood. We always went to church and shared a special service usually dedicated to mothers and their lives. One of the special things we did was to wear a carnation, red if mother was living and white if she had passed. The rose rekindled thoughts of those days and the excitement long ago. Thank you, Margaret Poor If any of you happened to see David Lowe around town in the daytime during the week, you are not seeing things. David retired from his job in San Francisco on April 16th and has been enjoying getting caught up on stuff around the house, spending time with Lady and of course, a lot more time with Linda. I hear that he has even been cooking dinner. You can ask him how much he misses getting up at the crack of dawn, not getting home until long after dark and all that time driving. Congratulations David on your retirement! ENJOY!!! Amy Ciampa is still living at Walnut Grove Assisted Living but her unit number has changed to #22. Help is urgently needed in the church office.
