1 artebellissimo CELEBRATING, SUPPORTING & ENJOYING THE TREASURES OF THE VATICAN MUSEUMS Fall ~ 2015 Pope Francis U.S. Visit as personally witnessed by Our Patron Member Pope Francis waives to the crowd in Philadelphia The historic visit of Pope Francis to the United States culminated in His Holiness s visit to Philadelphia where the World Meeting of Families was held this past September. Our own Fr. Michael Rock, pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Philadelphia had a front row seat to all the excitement. In addition, Fr. Rock met with a television crew from PBS there to cover the Papal visit. We asked Fr. Rock for his thoughts on the Papal visit, The excitement was certainly in the air throughout the entire city of Philadelphia as everyone prepared for the visit of Pope Francis. While New York and Washington were also on the list of Papal stops, what made Philadelphia so important was the World Meeting of Families taking place there all week. The ceremony closing this meeting was the whole reason of the Papal trip. Some 17,000 people came from all over the world to celebrate family life. At my parish, Our Lady of Lourdes, in the western side of Philadelphia we were filled with "Francis Frenzy." A number of our parishioners work for the Archdiocese and were members of the planning committee for the event. The Pope was actually going to be staying within the boundaries of our parish - his "home" in Philadelphia was St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, just three blocks away from my rectory. Many people, including myself, decided not to fight the thousands of people in long security lines to see the Pope in the city. We joyfully walked three blocks up the street and caught a great look at the Pope as well as some fine pictures of him. - Fr. I am overwhelmed with the many wonderful people that I have met. I am grateful for the wonderful friendships that have been forged these past ten years and I look forward to many more years as our work with the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums continues to grow and prosper.- To all my Patron friends, I wish youbuon Natale e un Felice Anno Nuovo With Gratitude, LORRAINE DODERO Chairman, Ohio Chapter Ciao Several of our Ohio Chapter members traveled to Rome and visited the Vatican Museums to see firsthand the special attention afforded Patron Members. Our Patron members were treated to behind the scenes visits to the Raphael Rooms, restoration laboratories and the Carriage Museum. Don t forget if you will be traveling to Rome, contact our office to arrange your special Patrons tours.- Mrs. Rose Morelli and her brother Mr. Alfred Buccieri traveled this past September and spent time in their ancestral town of Coreno Assino. They also enjoyed a private Patron tour of the Vatican Museums with their favorite guide Mario Muzzi. Carole Carr and Carole Keating traveled to Italy in September and they both enjoyed the behind the scenes tours of the restoration work and were delighted to get Fr. Mark Haydu s insight on some of the current Patron restorations underway. Father Terrence Grachanin had the Restoration underway wonderful opportunity to celebrate his in the Laboratory parents wedding anniversary at a Mass in St. Peter s Basilica. His entire family was grateful for the hospitality of the Patrons staff during their private tours. 2

4 THE PATRONS OF THE ARTS IN THE VATICAN MUSEUMS, OHIO CHAPTER / FALL 2015 PicturesqueShoreby Club CLAM BAKE ON THE LAKE A sellout crowd was on hand as once again the Patrons celebrated the arrival of fall with its annual clam bake. This year s event was held at the picturesque Shoreby Club. Ohio Patron members and invited guests dined on the delicious Shoreby Club cuisine and enjoyed the musical trio, A Glass of Wine, as they played classic Italian songs. A fun reverse raffle was held along with a wonderful selection of raffle baskets for attendees to win. A special thanks to the Italian Solon Club for the running of the reverse raffle boards. Monsignor Terence Hogan was a special guest and we are thankful that he brought some beautiful weather with him from Florida. The Patrons ninth anniversary of our annual clambake was a big success, with our largest turn out ever, over 160 Patron members and guests gathered at the Patrons Bake on the Anthony and Michelle Togliatti Lake. The Vatican has turned part of the lavish papal summer estate south of Rome - which the frugal Pope Francis has never used - into a museum and linked it to Rome via a train. Both were recently inaugurated, and one of the main draws is a chance to stand at the window overlooking a large courtyard from where popes before Francis blessed crowds every Sunday for weeks during their summer breaks. Seven large rooms in the now unused villa house a Papal portrait gallery and Pontifical artifacts, such as intricately embroidered liturgical vestments, elaborate thrones going back hundreds of years, and several pair of papal slippers, including those worn by Pope Pius V, who died in Opening the palace doors "was the pope's initiative," said Antonio Paolucci, head of the Vatican Museums. "Francis said 'I won't go to Castel Gandolfo because I have too much to do at the Vatican' and so he told me to open the palace and the grounds to the public." "The people of Castel Gandolfo were certainly disappointed that the pope decided to not spend his summers here. This is a chance to draw attention to the city again and help the economy," Paolucci said. A special train will run on Saturdays from the Vatican to Castel Gandolfo, about 20 miles south of Rome. Tourists can see the Vatican Museums and gardens and then take the train to the Castel Gandolfo estate and the satellite museum.- Steam Locomotive getting ready to depart the Vatican Station 6

This cookie gets its flavoring from the anise extract. Anise is often used in Italian dessert recipes and the smell in your home when you bake these will remind you of your Nonni. For the first time, tourists visit the Pontiff's gallery at the Pope's summer residence The town square at Castel Gandolfo The gardens at Castel Gandolfo COOKIE INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup granulated sugar 3 large eggs 2 teaspoons anise extract 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 2-3 tablespoons milk ICING INGREDIENTS: 2 cups confectioners' sugar 3-4 tablespoons milk 1/8 teaspoon anise extract food coloring (optional) sprinkles of your choice(optional) mangiare Mix the butter and sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy, add eggs one at a time, and then add the extract, mixing well. Sift together the flour and baking powder, add a 1/3 of the flour mixture to the butter and sugar mixture, mixing well, then add a tablespoon of the milk. Repeat until all the flour and milk is incorporated. The batter should be easy to mold, but not sticky. Using a tablespoon, drop balls of the batter onto parchment lined baking sheets, leaving space for them to bake and puff up in the oven. Bake for about 10 minutes or until they puff up and the bottoms begin to turn a light golden brown. While the cookies are baking, mix together the confectioners sugar, milk and extract. At this point you can also add food coloring if you want your icing to be a special color. After the cookies have mostly cooled, hold each one upside down and dip into your frosting glaze, flip it over and let it rest on a flat surface covered with wax paper. If you intend to use sprinkles, only dip a few at time and then sprinkle them, or else the frosting will harden and sprinkles will no longer stick. (If your frosting begins to harden before you are done dipping just microwave it for about 10 seconds to let melt again!) Let the frosting harden to the touch, arrange on a plate and get ready to serve these Italian Christmas cookies to your family and friends! 7
