1 St. Paul Lutheran Church In Jesus name, Do justice, Love kindness, Walk humbly with God. St. Paul is an open, affirming, and inclusive church, welcoming all who seek God. 515 South Wheaton Avenue - Wheaton, Illinois Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 6, 2015 Christ s Sacrifice And Ours
2 Welcome to St. Paul Visiting today? We are glad you are here! Stop by the Welcome center and receive a sweet gift. PLEASE WEAR YOUR NAME TAGS Interim Pastor Bill hopes you can help him learn names more easily by wearing your name tags for worship. He likes to use people s names at the communion rail when serving the bread, and the name tags make that so much easier. Thank you! Rainbow bags for toddlers are on the wooden rack up front on the right. A staffed nursery for infants to three-year-olds is on the lower level during worship services. Assisted listening headphones are available for those having difficulty hearing. Large-print bulletins are available. See an usher for assistance. Please write your name and other information on the welcome pad. About our Worship We follow an ancient pattern through the liturgy (which literally means the work of the people ). Some parts of the service may change each week, but there is a consistent flow: praising God, hearing God s word, offering our prayers and gifts, celebrating communion, and being sent into the world for service. The format remains fairly constrant, but the style will vary widely. Sometimes we sing with the pipe organ, and the ministers chant. Sometimes we worship accompanied by piano, guitars, drums, violins, flutes or whatever our folk play. We range from Bach to blues, because we know that different styles connect to different people. So we all worship together, and change the style every few weeks. It s one of the ways we minister to each other and build community. Thank you for being part of our worship and community today! *At the asterisk, stand as you are able. 6 *Prayer of the Day Great High Priest, you have given your own blood as a sacrifice for the purification of spirit. Cleanse our spirits and welcome us into your heavenly sanctuary. C: Amen Responding to the Word of God The Lesson Hebrews 9:1-14 Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. For a tent was constructed, the first one, in which were the lampstand, the table, and the bread of the Presence; this is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain was a tent called the Holy of Holies. In it stood the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which there were a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant; above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot speak now in detail. Such preparations having been made, the priests go continually into the first tent to carry out their ritual duties; but only the high priest goes into the second, and he but once a year, and not without taking the blood that he offers for himself and for the sins committed unintentionally by the people. By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the sanctuary has not yet been disclosed as long as the first tent is still standing. This is a symbol of the present time, during which gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, but deal only with food and drink and various baptisms, regulations for the body imposed until the time comes to set things right. But when Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation), he entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, with the sprinkling of the ashes of a heifer, sanctifies those who have been defiled so that their flesh is purified, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God! L: Word of God, Word of Life. C: Thanks be to God. Sermon Blood Work Rev. Fred Reklau

Receive today the gifts we gratefully return to you, signs of our appreciation for your great sacrifice. C: Amen Sharing the Eucharistic Meal *The Great Thanksgiving ELW page 190 P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right... join their unending hymn. *Sanctus ELW page 190
10 *Eucharistic Prayer *The Lord s Prayer ELW page 191 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen The Distribution of Communion The body and blood of Christ are present in this sacrament, for the forgiveness of sin and the strengthening of faith. All people are welcome to share in this meal with us. Parents, if you have a young child who receives communion, please indicate that when the minister comes to you. Those who do not receive communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing; simply keep your hands folded. Come forward and receive the bread from the minister. Gluten-free bread is available. The gold chalice contains wine; you may drink directly from the cup or dip your bread into the wine. The pottery chalice contains non-alcoholic grape juice, which you may receive by dipping your bread into the juice. Return to your seat by the side aisles. If you would like communion brought to you, simply let an usher know. Agnus Dei ELW page 191

Regular Worship Schedule to Resume September 13 As the school year and our program year begin again, we will return to our regular 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. worship services on Rally Day, September 13. It was good to all worship together over the summer months, and to enjoy fellowship on the lawn when the weather permitted. Thanks to all who provided hospitality. Please note, we may return to one service at 9:30 a.m. during the summer months of All Church Picnic - Sunday, September 13 Join us on Rally Day for a picnic and celebration from 12:15 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the church lawn! St. Paul members and friends are invited for an afternoon of food, games and fellowship as we kick-off the program year, and you are encouraged to invite friends and neighbors to take part! The church picnic is free and all are welcome to attend. St. Paul members are asked to signup in the narthex in advance to help picnic planners get a count for the burgers/hot dogs/brats/veggie burgers and drinks that are being provided. Please bring a side dish to share. Contact Vanessa with questions! ROOTS Orientation at Lincoln Marsh, September 20th - RSVP deadline today! To help us kick off the new year of ROOTS middle school ministry, we're heading out to Lincoln Marsh for an afternoon of fun group-building activities! On Sunday, September 20 from 1:30 to 6:00 p.m., all 6th through 8th grade youth, their parents and ROOTS adult leaders will gather for a series of activities led by Lincoln Marsh staff, including trustbuilding games, climbing wall, and ropes course challenges. Today is the RSVP deadline; please respond to the Evite, or contact Vanessa if you will be taking part! Faith Circle Faith Circle begins another year of fellowship, devotional growth, and outreach this Tuesday, September 8, at noon in Fellowship Hall. Laurie Schuemann will share her story. Quoting her, "once you know, you can never NOT know." She has discovered this truth through a series of lived events: Once volunteering with assisting missionaries at the Lutheran Center in Mexico City, and also volunteering with (AMEXTRA) Assoc. for Urban and Rural Development. St. Paul also has close ties with this group through a project that included a group of our youth and adults on a mission trip. Bring your BBL (brown bag lunch!) and a friend. Desserts will be waiting....
17 Transition Team The Pastoral Call Process has begun! The Ministry Transition Team, consisting of Phil Adams, Bethany Huber, Carol Ketterhagen, Anne Krick, Bud Krick (Council Liaison), Gayle Meskimen, and Susan Mullinger, has been formed and is meeting regularly as we complete the Ministry Site Profile. Several opportunities and ways for the congregation to share input are being offered. Please refer to the following timeline of events: September 13: Adult Forum (9:45-10:45 AM) September 13: Table at Church Picnic September 20: Adult Forum (9:45-10:45 AM) September 20: Roundtable (6:00-8:00 PM, Dinner will be served.) Additionally, please watch for bulletin inserts and an opportunity to respond to questions posted on the St. Paul website. If you have questions or comments please send them to our group ROUNDTABLE!!!! Hosted by Ministry Transition Team on Sunday, September 20, from 6-8 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. We won't have "round" tables, but join us anyway to share ideas regarding our ministry at St. Paul. The format is simple. We'll break into small groups. We'll ask someone to record the group's main points for each question posed. (We might even rotate a person out to another group for the next question to mix up the groups a bit). At the end, we'll summarize each group's ideas. There will also be a light supper before we start to get us energize.... Please join us, won t you?
