1 St. Paul Lutheran Church In Jesus name, Do justice, Love kindness, Walk humbly with God. St. Paul is an open, affirming, and inclusive church, welcoming all who seek God. 515 South Wheaton Avenue - Wheaton, Illinois Eighth Sunday after Pentecost July 19, 2015 The Apostles' Creed: God the Creator

2 Welcome to St. Paul Visiting today? We are glad you are here! Stop by the Welcome center and receive a sweet gift. Pr. Bill, our interim pastor during this time of transition, hopes you can help him learn names more easily by wearing your name tags for worship. He likes to use people s names at the communion rail when serving the bread, and the name tags make that so much easier. Thank you! Rainbow bags for toddlers are on the wooden rack up front on the right. A staffed nursery for infants - three year olds is on the lower level during worship services. Assisted listening headphones are available for those having difficulty hearing. Large-print bulletins are available. See usher for assistance. Please write your name and other information on the welcome pad. About our Worship We follow an ancient pattern through the liturgy (which literally means the work of the people ). Some parts of the service may change each week, but there is a pretty consistent flow: praising God, hearing God s word, offering our prayers and gifts, celebrating communion, and being sent into the world for service. The format remains fairly consistent, but the style will vary widely. Sometimes we sing with the pipe organ, and the ministers chant. Sometimes we worship accompanied by piano, guitars, drums, violins, flutes or whatever our folk play. We range from Bach to blues, because we know that different styles connect to different people. So we all worship together, and change the style every few weeks. It s one of the ways we minister to each other and build community. Thank you for being part of our worship and community today! *At the asterisk, stand as you are able. 5 *Prayer of the Day P: Almighty God, we thank you for planting in us the seed of your word. By your Holy Spirit help us to receive it with joy, live according to it, and grow in faith and hope and love, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen Responding to the Word of God The Lesson Genesis 1:1-2:4a In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3Then God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. 4And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.5god called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. 6And God said, Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters. 7So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. 8God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. 9And God said, Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear. And it was so. 10God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11Then God said, Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it. And it was so. 12The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good.13and there was evening and there was morning, the third day. 14And God said, Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, 15and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth. And it was so. 16God made the two great lights the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night and the stars. 17God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, 18to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. 20And God said, Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky. 21So God created the great sea monsters and

6 every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth. 23And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. 24And God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind. And it was so. 25God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good. 26Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. 27So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth. 29God said, See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. 30And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food. And it was so. 31God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. 2Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude.2and on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. 3So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. 4These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. Sermon: God the Creator Rev. Fred Reklau

7 *Hymn of the Day: #684 Creating God, Your Fingers Trace *Apostle s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

All people are welcome to share in this meal with us. Parents, if you have a young child who receives communion, please indicate that when the minister comes to you. Those who do not receive communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing; simply keep your hands folded. Come forward and receive the bread from the minister. Gluten-free bread is available. The gold chalice contains wine; you may drink directly from the cup or dip your bread into the wine. 16 In Our Congregation Adult Forum Leaders Needed With Pastor Williamson's departure, we are looking for a few good people to plan and coordinate speakers for Adult Forum each Sunday morning during our program year. If you have ideas for topics/speakers you would like to hear at Adult Forum or if you have an interest in contacting and scheduling potential speakers, this might be a limited time commitment project for you. If you are interested in working on this, please contact Council member John Campbell at jncampbell1@hotmail.com or Worship & Music Committee Kicks-Off a New Year! On Sunday, August 9, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall, we plan to get together for one hour in order to meet the group members, and share our hopes and dreams for worship in the coming year. Don t like meetings? On-line sharing is fine. One of the topics for discussion that day is: How often shall we meet? Monthly? Bi-monthly? Quarterly? Questions? Contact Pat Pape at patpape1@sbcglobal.net, , or Seeking Confirmation Mentors We are currently seeking nominations for mentors in the Making Disciples program for youth preparing to affirm their baptism in January Please let us know of someone that you think would enjoy and excel in this ministry. Simply contact Vanessa Young in the church office. All nominations will be carefully considered, with an understanding of making a good match for both the mentor and the mentee to learn and grow in faith together. Mentor nominees will be given the opportunity to review the details of the mentor program and decide if it is a ministry to which they feel called. Those who have served as a mentor before are welcome and encouraged to serve again!
