1 October Month of the Holy Rosary This week I have asked Paul Fahey to share with us. God Bless, Fr. Dennis This weekend I wanted to share with you my experience at the World Meeting of Families conference and Papal Mass in Philadelphia. On Sunday, September 27, Pope Francis said Mass for nearly 900,000 people, but this celebration was just the conclusion of the week-long World Meeting of Families. Kristina and I arrived in Philadelphia the Monday before the Pope s Mass; the day before the conference began. We stayed with a host family, Scott and Jennifer, that we found online. They live about 45 minutes outside of the city. We arrived at their house around dinner time, and what was waiting for us was not only a homemade meal, but a private Mass! Scott and Jennifer also opened their house to a Colombian priest, Fr. Danilo, and had arranged everything so that he could say Mass for us before dinner. It was very simple and very beautiful. That whole week we attended the World Meeting of Families Conference with about 20,000 other people. We heard amazing speakers like Bishop Robert Barron, Cardinal Sean O Malley, Archbishop Chaput, Professor Helen Alvare, and many more. We saw several Catholic authors and speakers just hanging out at exhibit booths or mingling with the crowds. However, what was perhaps most inspiring was the sheer number of families with children along with priests and religious sisters. Being with so many other Catholics, who came from 100 different countries, was amazing. After the conference ended on Friday we picked up our two boys, Simon and Oliver, who came to Philadelphia with my in-laws, for the weekend. We skipped out on the festivities that went on that Saturday in order to save our energy for the Papal Mass on Sunday. And if this guy from Hubbardston thought 20,000 people was a lot, the nearly 900,000 that attended Mass was overwhelming. There were so many people that we unfortunately couldn t see the altar, but Simon and I were able to see Pope Francis as he drove by on his way to the front of the crowd. This was a real highlight because while it for sure was a challenge to bring two toddlers to such an event, Simon was able to say that he saw Pope Francis drive by. Kristina and I were really trying to enter into that week with the perspective that we were on a pilgrimage rather than simply a vacation or a trip. What's the difference you may ask? First, we entered into this week with hearts and minds open to God's will rather than being chained to our own plans. Second, we came to the World Meeting of Families and the Papal Mass with some intentions, particular ways that we prayed the Lord would act on in our lives and in the lives of our families. With this pilgrimage perspective in mind, there were two things that I wanted to share with you. The first was the deep gratitude that I felt all week toward everyone who made this pilgrimage possible for us. For our host family who showed us tremendous hospitality, staying with them was seriously like staying with family. They also opened up their home to us at no cost. We likely couldn't have afforded to go if we had to pay for lodging all week. Also for our family and friends who babysat for us all week. And finally for the parish. Seriously what church allows the DRE to leave for a week at the beginning of the school year? All the ministry staff here covered everything for me while I was gone so that I didn t have to worry about a thing. The second thing I wanted to share with you was a more personal way that the Lord worked in my life. Like I said, Kristina and I really wanted to view our trip as a pilgrimage. This meant entrusting everything that week to God, which also meant not complaining (because if everything is from God, then even the inconveniences have a purpose). What quickly became clear to me was how much I complain. I was constantly having to check myself before I spoke so that I wouldn t complain. But God must have given me a special grace that week because I can probably count on

2 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 October 11, 2015 Paul Fahey Continued. my fingers how many times I complained during the whole pilgrimage. This was both a painful and hopeful revelation for me. Painful in that it revealed how much I do complain and how much opportunity and beauty I miss because of it. But also hopeful because if I could curb this bad habit for a week then there's some hope that God can cut it out of my life entirely. One last thing before I end. At the Papal Mass, Pope Francis asked everyone there to pray for him. He has asked the faithful to pray for him many times before, but this time I really took it to heart. So now I ask you to please join me in praying for Pope Francis continued good health so that the Holy Spirit can keep using him to do great things for the Church. Christ s Peace, Paul Evening of Intercessory Prayer Many believers struggle with sins and fallen tendencies that seem to be impossible to break. Families inherit broken and wounded influences alcoholism, anger issues, emotional and physical abuse that can be passed on generationally. Scripture tells us that communities and nations can be influenced by powers of darkness and spirits of rebellion. The Church refers to these things as strongholds. On Tuesday, October 27 th at 7:00 pm. we will gather in the church before the Blessed Sacrament and pray to break these strongholds and sinful patterns in our nation, our community and our families. Come and join us! October, Month to Reflect on the Gift of Life What can I do to support life? We need saints that drink Coca-Cola, that eat hot dogs, that surf the internet and that listen to their ipods. We need saints that love the Eucharist, that are not afraid or embarrassed to eat a pizza or drink a beer with their friends. We need saints who love the movies, dance, sports, and theater. We need saints that are open, sociable, normal, happy companions. We need saints who are in this world and who know how to enjoy the best in this world without being callous or mundane.
