1 Most Holy Trinity February 17, 2019 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said: Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way. ~Luke 6:20-26

2 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 February 17, 2018 From The Pastor s Desk This week I have asked Corey Luna to share with us about the upcoming Steubenville Youth Conference. God Bless, Fr. Dennis This weekend kicks off our availability for Steubenville sign up! The Steubenville Youth Conferences that we attend every year have been a huge life source to our youth ministry program over the years because of the powerful encounters that students have with Jesus. They come back every summer with renewed hearts and new possibilities, and it s always very exciting to see them so alive with the Holy Spirit. Last year I invited all of you in the parish to invest in this trip because of its importance and because the prices for this conference continue to increase. This invitation was met with a remarkable amount of generosity from parishioners and it made a vast difference for all those who attended. It is because of charitable donors that we are able to make these things possible in our program, which is why I am reaching out and asking all of you to consider supporting us this year as well. The rough estimate for the Steubenville cost per student is $330. This sort of cost for a weekend event can be a significant detraction for students in our area. When I ve spoken to students about this trip, once the cost is listed it can be a huge obstacle to consider. The sports, extracurriculars, and retreats students participate in add up to a great deal of money. Students in our program are increasingly aware of the weight of that cost to their parents, or the difficulty of fundraising/paying that cost themselves. So instead of asking themselves if it is something Jesus really wants them to attend or instead of reacting to a desire to know Jesus more, they approach this decision in fear or worry. That fear stems questions of unbelief, Is this a really good idea? Can I really afford to go this year? Is this really important for me right now? instead of thinking about what Christ can accomplish in their hearts. In the gospel last weekend, Jesus prophecies a mission over his disciples Simon Peter, James and John. He says to them, Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men. It seems an impossible and maybe cryptic mission to the first disciples. I know that I couldn t have helped myself approaching that sort of opportunity with some questions. How could I possibly not be afraid? Why are you choosing me? What exactly do you mean about catching men? It s hard not to respond in fear to obstacles that come up, but there are always amazing things on the other side of an invitation from God. We have seen the gifts of those invitations at our parish. At least half of our ministry staff, most young adults that have come through our program, and kids in the program can now trace the first stirrings of true conversion back to a Steubenville youth conference. The direction in this conference is so prayerful and so full of God that it gives kids a way to receive Jesus in their heart in a unique and priceless way. Unfortunately, even though I know that this is priceless, there must be a monetary cost associated with this experience. I believe it is a major temptation to think that kids should have to earn these opportunities, whether by fundraising, working, or picking and choosing between retreats. But faith is never something we should have to earn. In the gospel, Jesus didn t call Peter, James and John on mission because they already had a strong evangelization resume. They didn t earn that opportunity at all. They were just fishermen, but Jesus saw past what they were and knew what they could be if they would only say yes. All of our kids have the opportunity to be just like the first disciples. Simply saying yes to Jesus one moment, and being fishers of men the next moment. They just need the opportunities to say yes, and Steubenville is a very special place for that yes. There is a limited amount of time we have to provide our young people opportunities like Steubenville, so we would like to make it possible for them to attend every single one they can. I ask all of you to respond to the Lord in this time if you feel called to invest in our youth ministry in this way. We have already seen so much fruit from this conference and I would love to see the Holy Spirit keep taking more ground in all of our students hearts this summer. If you would like more information on sponsoring us, please me at mhtyouthcorey@gmail.com, or if you would rather donate right away please send checks (made payable to MHT) to the parish office. You may request to support a specific student or have your donation be split among all who attend. God Bless, Corey June 21-23

3 Office Phone: Page 3 Website: mhtparish.com Most Holy Trinity Educational Trust Fund Convenient Ways to Contribute to the ETF You can make a substantial contribution to your favorite Catholic charity, at no additional cost to you. When looking for life insurance to protect your family, you may want to consider purchasing a policy that provides an additional 5% death benefit contribution to your favorite Catholic charity, at no additional cost. Some life insurance policies offer this benefit. Example: You purchase a life insurance policy with a $100,000 death benefit (spouse is named beneficiary) which includes a Fraternal Legacy Rider (FLR) at no additional premium (MHT Educational Trust Fund is named as the FLR beneficiary). Upon your death, it will pay a $100,000 death benefit to your spouse and an additional 5% benefit to the Catholic charities you designated. In this case MHT Educational Trust Fund would receive $5,000. It s a great way to make a donation to a Catholic charity at no additional cost to you. Check with your insurance agent to see if they offer this benefit. (Example is based on Catholic Order of Forester life insurance information.) Qualified Charitable Distributions from an IRA Charitable contributions made directly from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to Most Holy Trinity (MHT) parish or to the MHT Educational Trust Fund can be totally tax free if you meet the following specific conditions: IRA owner is 70 ½ years of age or older when the distribution is made. Maximum contribution allowed per taxpayer, per year is $100,000. Contribution must be made directly from the IRA custodian to the charity. This means the check must be written by the IRA custodian (e.g.: Knights of Columbus, Vanguard, Fidelity, etc.) directly to MHT parish or to the MHT Educational Trust Fund. The primary benefit of making contributions as Qualified Charitable Distributions is that the distribution from your IRA is not included in your gross income so it is not taxable. It does not matter whether you claim itemize deductions or not on your federal return. This is a great way to make the most of your IRA savings and maximize your yearly giving to MHT parish and the Educational Trust Fund without paying federal income taxes on withdrawals from your IRA. Talk to your tax advisor for specific guidance. Daddy/Daughter Dance Dance will be held February 23rd in the Waldron Cafeteria from 6:00 8:00 pm. Cost is $5 per child attending. All girls are welcome to bring a date; dad, stepdad, grandpa, uncle, cousin, etc. and dance the night away. All proceeds will be donated to No More Sidelines Foundation. Questions: contact Nickie at nickiethelen@yahoo.com. Also, There will be a CAKE WALK at this years dance. If you are able to make/buy a cake to be given away as a prize please Nickie Thelen at address above. Thank You! We want to thank Simon Brothers Trucking for all of their help this winter cleaning our parking lot. Simon's have been doing this for MHT for a countless number of years and it is very much appreciated! 4 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 February 17, 2018 Principal of Most Holy Trinity School Anne Hufnagel AnneH@mhtparish.com By connecting our Catholic faith to life, we at Most Holy Trinity School seek to fulfill Christ's mandate to proclaim the Gospel, restore all things in Him, strive to lead our students to the Truth for the betterment of this world and prepare them for the age to come. Important Dates: Tues., Feb. 19 Thurs., Feb. 21 Friday, March 1 8:15 a.m. 3 rd /4 th Hazel Findlay for Mass 8:15 a.m. Parents: Please pay special attention to notifications for scheduling changes due to all of the recent days off of school. We appreciate your patience. Too many rules?: It sounds really spiritual to say God is interested in a relationship, not in rules. But it's not biblical. From top to bottom, the Bible is full of commands. They aren't meant to stifle a relationship with God, but to protect it, seal it, and define it. Never forget: first God delivered the Israelites from Egypt, then He gave them the law. God's people were not redeemed by observing the law. But they were redeemed so that they might obey the law. - Kevin DeYoung Father/Son Breakfast Sunday, March 10th, 9:30 am Join us in the MHT Activity Center for the annual Father/Son breakfast!
