1 OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL PARISH in the care of the Carmelites since Church: 312 Cavendish Road, Coorparoo 4151 Office: 2 Norfolk Street, Coorparoo 4151 Sunday 9th December 2018 Second Sunday of Advent (Year C) Last Saturday on 1 st December we put up our Christmas tree and decorations and got out the Advent calendar for another year. All of the family was there my husband, four kids, the dog all having a jubilant time unfolding Christmas lights and lifting the youngest to put the star on the top of the tree. It was one of those perfect family moments.. except it wasn t! Even as I was enjoying the time, it felt to me like there were people missing. And I could see them clearly those missing ones joining our family in spirit, if not in body our three children who had never known life outside of the womb. And my heart ached for the beauty of what I have, but also for the pain and grief and loss of all that will never be. As one of my favourite authors, Sarah Bessey, says in her blog Advent is for the Ones Who Know Longing :- If Christmas is for the joy, then Advent is for the longing. When I was young, I couldn t understand this emphasis on waiting let s get to the Christmas joy! Now that I have wept, now that I have grieved, now that I have lost, now that I have learned to hold space with and for the ones who are hurting, now I have a place for Advent So, Advent is an invitation to us. It is an invitation for us to sit in the now, even as we long for the not now; it is an invitation for us to show gratitude for all we have, but still to long for all that should/could/ would be. And maybe, instead of us waiting for Jesus to come at this time of Advent, just maybe Jesus is issuing an invitation for us to come to him. Maybe Jesus is waiting too for us to wake up and realise our need of him, for us to wake up and realise that he needs us in this hurting world to accomplish his plan, for us to listen and see and love! Maybe Jesus is waiting for us to take off your dress of sorrow and distress, put on the beauty of the glory of God for ever as articulated so beautifully in our first reading today from Baruch. I leave the last words again to Sarah Bessey from her blog A Prayer for the Broken-Hearted at Christmas:- I pray for the love and joy and the peace and the hope of Advent to be yours. Maybe this isn t your season for celebration, but the good news is that Advent and even Christmas isn t just for the ones who feel happiness; it s also for the ones who are afraid and wondering, who are refugees and who are broken-hearted. You, as you are right now, were written into the Story from the beginning and you have a place here, you belong at this Christmas table. Unlocking Luke's Narrative of Jesus' Birth Date: Wednesday, 12th December 2018, 7.30pm Venue: St. James Parish Priory, 165 Old Cleveland Road, Coorparoo While the gospels of Matthew and Luke have many things in common, they also differ much from each other. Particularly, Luke's narrative of Jesus' birth seems to part from Matthew's account. As the liturgical lectionary 2019 proposes Luke's "report" on Jesus' birth we will focus particularly on the Third Gospel. 5 FLOODING IN ZUMALAI On 24 th November 2018 heavy rain caused flash flooding in Zumalai. The boarding house kitchen filled with water, leaving the ground covered in thick mud once the water subsided. Nobody was injured, and the initial assessment is that no structural damage has occurred. There has, however, been some produce loss. There were 65 sacks of rice stored in the kitchen, 40 were lost due to being waterlogged. Cooking utensils were washed away and damaged and the priests and boarding house students are working to clean up the grounds around the boarding house and church. It is expected that the appropriate government departments and NGO s who specialize in emergency disaster relief will respond to their needs. The Carmelites will continue to monitor the situation and let us know if any additional assistance is required. We ask that you keep the Zumalai community in your thoughts and prayers during this time and that you might also respond more generously with your giving this Christmas to the people of Zumalai. To date it is estimated that it will cost approximately $1,000 to replace the lost produce and utensils, and to pay for the clean-up. We thank you for your generosity.
