(John 2:5) Think about praying for an unborn baby and their families. Every day 4000 babies are killed by abortion. They have so little protection only the hand of God can end this. Prayer is the best weapon to help them the most effective. Say this prayer for nine months to save a baby s life. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much, I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion..being PROLIFE is: believing that a baby's life is a gift that should be cherished. believing that a mother is a precious human life with value and dignity. believing that all human life belongs only to the Creator who gave us life. believing that all life is God's to give and take. 5 DEACON REFLECTION BY: DEACON JACK Every day, Deacons, Priests and Bishops are required to say prayers called the Divine Office or in other words the Liturgy of the hours. Deacons are only required to say the morning and evening parts of the office. Whereas priests have to say the whole thing because they get into trouble more often than deacons and need more prayers. As part of the Morning Prayer we recite a part called the Canticle of Zachariah. Zachariah was the father of John the Baptist and the prayer is really instruction for him and for those of us who follow. At the end of Canticle there is a very beautiful reflection, added by St. Luke who recorded the Canticle in his Gospel. The reflection says: In the tender compassion of our Lord the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Last year, when the confirmation candidates were assisting with the healing prayers that prayer became very real to me. Close to the end of the service I knelt before Deacon Paul for his anointing. The confirmation candidate helping him that day was a young woman. Now those of you who have been prayed over by Deacon Paul know that his procedure is very intense. He cradles your head strong enough to reduce you hat size. But the intensity he uses helps us feel the power of the Holy Spirit. This particular time when he cradled my head and when the young woman put her hand on my shoulder, something remarkable happened. My whole body became incredible warm. It was as if the hand of the young woman and the hands of old deacon completed an electrical circuit in my body generating heat. I was stunned! I am an engineer. Everything has to be logical...this was not logical, but it was very very real. At the time this happened I was going through therapy for stage four bladder cancer. When I told my family and others about the episode of heat, everyone thought that perhaps a miracle had occurred and I was cured of cancer. However, a week later when I had a CT scan it was discovered that the cancer was still there, was still moving along. So if that incident of heat was not a cure, what was it? What did it mean? Overtime, after discussing it with Fr. Paul and much petitioning to God, it became clear to me what was going on. Those of us who have been diagnosed with terminal cancer go through a great deal of apprehension. Apprehension, fear, anxiety, we wonder how long do I have? Will there be much pain, much sickness? Who will take care of my disabled wife, who depends so much on my help. Do I have enough time to complete all the legal proceedings of insurance and retirement benefits? And then the most vital question. Am I ready to meet God? Will He accept me into His kingdom after all the bad things that I have done? Since that incident it was gradually revealed to me what the incident meant. All those worries and the apprehension that I had disappeared. The prayers of that attractive young women and the prayers of that not so attractive old deacon had given me the greatest gift of all. It gave me peace. I know now what St. Luke had in mind. Those of us who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death are special in the eyes of our God. We have his cross and He loves us more than we can ever know. We live in the shadow of death, but it is a sacred time. A time when God is with us to guide our feet into the way of peace.

6 MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE TO THE LORD! I am extending an open invitation to parishioners who would like to consider joining the choir at St. Mary's. We are a very enthusiastic, fun-loving and welcoming group looking for new members. As the hymn goes, "All Are Welcome." You do not need to read music in order to join. The time commitment is thirty minutes before the 10 AM Sunday Mass and if you wanted to cantor, thirty minutes after mass. It does not require coming out for a rehearsal during the week. Tickets for the 9th Annual St. Mary's Parish Christmas Party at the Haversham House in Westerly are on sale after all Masses at St. Mary's and St. James.
