2 Page 2 THE ROSE Second Quarter 2009 Parish Council Working on Church Improvements This year the president of our parish council is Jaime Loza, having been a member for two years. He says he enjoys serving with other 16 parishioners and Father Liam, who appoints the members to the council. Jamie s daytime job is with Schrock Electrical Contractors. He is married to Michelle, and they have one adult daughter, Alexandra. Jaime notes that the other members are good people and work well together. They are concerned about the well-being of the Parish. One of the projects that the council helped oversee was the resurfacing of the parking area near the parish hall. Since there was no early announcement about the project, parishioners were no doubt surprised in early April when they arrived for Mass and found that the asphalt paving in the parking area had been removed. Jaime says that it had been in the plans for sometime as the surface had long deteriorated, and some action was necessary. The broken surface was a safety concern. The other members of the council include Jill Anderson, Theresa and Tyler Bongers, Mori Hain, Sherry Koski, Alfie Kottenstette, Dan Kraus, Art Padilla, Michele Prado-Landreth, Dwight Scott, Darla and Chad Sexton, John Saenz, Joan Javornik, Nadine Styduhar Wertz, and Jason Zahringer. Challenges for Sister Servants of the Blessed Sacrament Changes in life and being open to the will of God are expressed frequently by Sister Josephine Roney. The Sister Servants of the Blessed Sacrament have served in the Pueblo Diocese for 53 years. Their special calling is Eucharistic Adoration, and for income they distribute communion hosts to the parishes. Bishop Joseph C. Willging brought them to Pueblo to pray for the diocese and gave them the large old Cenacle Convent and chapel near St. Mary Corwin Hospital. When this building was demolished, the Sisters moved to a house remodeled for them on North Grand near the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Then, when the Bishop s House was sold and the area became very commercial, they again moved to the newly-vacated St. Mary s Convent. St. Mary s proved to be an ideal location for them and their daily adoration. Sister Josephine is the United States superior for her congregation. There are other convents in Canada. The U. S. motherhouse is in Waterville, Maine, where eight sisters, mostly elderly in their 80 s and 90 s live. A decision has been made for Sister Josephine to return to the motherhouse in Maine, where two sisters are facing surgery and the old motherhouse is in need of repairs. Many decisions are ahead and in a couple of months, Sister Lucille will return to Maine also. They leave Pueblo with many regrets and hopes of eventually returning. In the meantime, a branch of their congregation in the Philippines is sending sisters to assist the Americans. Sisters Ricella and Gorgonia have arrived and will assume responsibility for the daily Adoration Program and will live Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in St. Mary s Convent. We welcome the new Sisters and ask for your prayers for the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Sally Stricca
