2 Welcome to Holy Apostles Church and parish a thriving, vibrant community in Pimlico. We hope you ll join us and bring your own unique gifts and experience. Lay people of all ages and nationalities, married and single, with children and without, play a prominent part, as you will see from our welcome section. So, whatever you do, wherever you are from, whatever your walk of life has been, we invite you to share worship and fellowship with us. Enjoy a real sense of belonging to a community, right in the heart of London. A wide variety of people attend our community s lively Family Mass on Sundays at 10:30am. If you want a more reflective experience, the Saturday evening 6pm Mass is on more traditional lines, with organ music, established hymns and incense. The 9am Sunday Mass is quieter still, with just a few hymns. We are a warm and active community. There are many different projects, groups, and activities welcoming all from the youngest to the oldest. Fr Pat encourages and expects lay people to take their full responsibility in the parish. There is plenty for you to do if you want to; or you may prefer just to join the community for Sunday Mass, or sit and meditate and pray. Just choose how you want to fit in. Please come and see for yourself!
3 Church of the Holy Apostles The Priests House 47 Cumberland Street LONDON SW1V 4LY Tel: Fax: website: Dear reader, As parish priest I greet you and I extend to you a warm welcome on behalf of the Catholic community of Holy Apostles parish here in Pimlico in central London. Maybe you have lived here for some time. Maybe you have just moved here from another part of London, the UK or from abroad. Whichever, I warmly welcome you. I wish you blessings, prosperity and happiness in your new home and I invite you to join our parish community. Our parish family is made up of people whose families have lived in this part of London for generations, of people from all parts of the UK, and many of us are from all other parts of the world. It makes for a very interesting mix of people each with their own gifts, customs and cultures. But what we all have in common is our Catholic faith. Now, don t let me saying that, frighten you off. There are some whose faith is very strong. Others whose faith is up and down, others who come and go and hang on by the skin of their teeth but all of us are searching for God and seeking to know Him better. Please join us. There s a place for everyone. If I can be of service to you personally, please don t hesitate to call me or me and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Again, welcome to our parish! Yours devotedly Canon Pat Browne Parish Priest

6 Staff at Holy Apostles Church Our parish priest, Canon Pat Browne, presides over and animates our community. Fr. Pat is the first priest ever to be appointed Roman Catholic Duty Priest to Parliament. Additionally, he is on call as Chaplain for Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. Born in Co Meath in Ireland, the son of a postman, Pat Browne was ordained a priest in 1974 for the Westminster diocese. He began his ministry in Edmonton, and later moved to Westminster Cathedral. Parishioners appreciate his great singing voice and feel for liturgy he studied singing at the College of Music in Dublin while a seminarian at All Hallows College. At Westminster Cathedral he was part of the liturgical team and Cantor. When Pope John Paul II visited Britain in 1982, he was chosen to sing the Gospel at the Mass in the Cathedral and he did so again at the Vatican in 1988 when Pope Paul II beatified English and Welsh Martyrs. In 1985 Fr Pat became private secretary to the Cardinal Archbishop, Basil Hume. He keeps a photograph of the late Cardinal on his desk. In 1990 he took over the parish at Kentish Town, where he was said by the congregation to have worked wonders. As always, he lent his inspired touch to the liturgy, while people noted his ability to spot and bring on lay talent. He came to Pimlico as parish priest of Holy Apostles in Our parish sister is Sr Louise Callan, who is especially dedicated to the care of deprived and deaf children, the sick and the elderly. Born, like Fr Pat, in Ireland, her formation was as a Daughter of Charity in Dublin, but her work since then has been in England and Scotland. She provides a constant dedicated presence, unobtrusive but active, always there. Please make yourselves known to me, she says. Supporting both Fr Pat and Sr Louise, is JudyAnn Masters our Parish Pastoral Coordinator. She was born in California and comes to us via Hawaii. Now a British citizen, she has a MA in Pastoral Theology from Heythrop College, U of L, and has spent 25+ years in private practice as a counsellor and spiritual director. JudyAnn provides practical and spiritual support to our community s ministries and programmes. She has an open door policy. Our Hall manager, Jan Bidaud, deals with all the bookings and Hall related business. You can hire our parish hall at very reasonable rates for meetings and celebrations. Jan also looks after the building and house. M janbidaud@rcdow.org.uk
7 The Sacristans, Pat and Maureen Kehoe, prepare the church for liturgical celebrations including Mass, Morning and Evening Prayer and the Adoration of the blessed Sacrament. There are numerous other duties including looking after the candles and shrines in church. In Residence at Priest House Fr Pat keeps open house in the presbytery, which has a family feel. Presently, Fr Antonio Santos Marizane from Bulawayo Archdiocese, Zimbabwe is in residence. He is at School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS) working on his doctorate. He often helps Fr Pat with priestly duties, and readily joins in our community s socials. He will be with us 3+ years. Currently he is away doing research in Zimbabwe and will return in July. Fr Patrick Thawale, a priest from Lilongwe Diocese Malawi, is on sabbatical leave thanks to Canon Pat for the hospitality. He has been a rector of Blessed Bakanja AMECEA College, Nairobi, for the past six years. During these years he was also a part-time Theology Lecturer at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Hekima Jesuit College and Tangaza College, Nairobi, Kenya. A fulltime resident is Fr Gary Walsh, Canadian born. Formerly chaplain to Mother Teresa s Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, he spent ten years subsequently in their founder s native country of Albania, then the only officially atheist state in the world. Fr Gary now uses Holy Apostles as his base from which to carry on his ministry to the Albanian community in Britain. Priest House 47 Cumberland St. Pimlico, London SW1V 4LY

19 tel: fax: Giving Holy Apostles is a generous parish. That s good, because it enables us to undertake a lot of commitments in the local parish community, the wider community and in our sister parish in Kenya. You can help support us with a regular offertory donation. You may choose just to put money in the collection plate at weekly Mass. If you are a taxpayer, we benefit more if you can gift aid it. We can then claim an additional 20p from the taxman for every pound you give us. You can gift aid your contribution in two ways. First, having decided on what you want to commit, you can insert your regular weekly donation into a special gift aid envelope (a box of them can be obtained from the parish office) and put it in the collection. Secondly, best of all, if you have a bank account, you can make out a standing order. Best of all because a standing order cuts down the paperwork we have to do, including opening, counting and collating the amount in each envelope, and also allows us to plan more efficiently to meet the needs of the parish as we know what funds are coming in. People sometimes hesitate to take this course because they like to contribute to the collection when it comes round, but you can always still do that by just putting in an additional coin or two. You will find Gift Aid and Bankers Order forms below... Kathleen Griffin, Lilian Peter and John Wilkins authors of Version I Welcome Pack
