Daniel Doty Scripture: Ezekiel 37:1-14; John 11:1-6, 20-26a, Anthem: We Are One With You, O Lord Chancel Choir A CrossFit Lent: We approach the Lenten season with an emphasis on interiority, personal investigation, and contrition the intentional work of seeking a change of heart or actions. Reflection and change take work, hard work. Lent can be like CrossFit training for the soul, a restart in a focused area. We walk this season together, demanding the best of ourselves, ready to support one another, and prepared to see truths that shatter our self-understanding. We get the term CrossFit from the exercise industry, but we can encounter CrossFit training in various areas of life: a period of training for a new job, an intensive retreat for personal transformation, or even a concerted effort at working on our marital relationship. We often adopt Lenten disciplines (think giving something up for Lent ). We do this in some ways to

To Jerusalem, and Calvary, and the cross. In fact, the text says we are "two miles away," in this place of death and mourning, at the grave and with those who gather nearby, troubled in spirit: the family and friends of Lazarus, including Jesus. And we are, in church time, only two weeks away from the Empty Tomb. How fitting, then, and how challenging, to read, on this Fifth Sunday of Lent, this text of the raising of Lazarus, set firmly within, even entangled with, the controversy and plots that swirl around Jesus. There are those who see in the words and the works of Jesus--even in the healings--a blasphemy that deserves death. But Jesus claims to be doing the works of "the Father," so even the worries and warnings of his disciples do not keep him from making his way not only to Lazarus' tomb, but also to his own place of suffering, death, and, eventually, resurrection. The Rev. Kathryn Matthews is the retired dean of Amistad Chapel at the national offices of the United Church of Christ in Cleveland, Ohio. Source: The Peace of Christ be with you!
