Third Sunday of Easter World Apostolate of Fatima's Centennial U.S. Tour The World Apostolate of Fatima's Centennial U.S. Tour For Peace has finally begun! The historic tour, marking the 100 th Anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima, will feature the world-famous International Pilgrim Virgin Statue, traveling worldwide for nearly 70 years. Chapel Substitutes Needed Our Adoration Chapel is in need of substitutes. Being a substitute is easy. When a volunteer is not available for their hour, they call their coordinator, who in turn calls someone from our substitute list. A substitute can specify the hours they are available, so you will not be called for an hour you cannot do. When you are called to cover an hour, if you are available, you say yes. If you are not available, you just say so. That s it! This is a great way to help our Adoration Chapel to continue to run smoothly, especially if you are unable to take a regular, weekly hour. 4 St. Gemma Galgani ( ) Feast Day April 11 th Gemma is a modern mystic, whose brief life bridged the beginning of the twentieth century. Hers was a hidden life in which she was in constant pain, yet also in constant communication with the Christ who had suffered so much for us. Perhaps her spinal tuberculosis was congenital. The doctors despaired of a cure, but she was instantaneously healed when St. Gabriel of the Sorrows, a Passionist saint to whom she had much devotion, appeared to her. Gemma wanted to become a Passionist nun, but, miracle or not, the Passionist community declined to receive her because of her health record. She was therefore destined to live at home in prayer and atonement. It was her policy never to say "No" to any trial God wanted her to submit to. An added penance came in 1897 when her pharmacist father died, leaving his eight children penniless. Gemma, then 19, had to be the mother of the family for some time. Then she went to live with a married aunt. She was kindly treated there, but feeling the atmosphere in this prosperous household too worldly, she was happy to return home. She had declined two offers of marriage, wishing rather to serve God totally. Gemma's remaining life was on two levels. In her ordinary life she kept busy about her usual tasks, which included care of the poor. She was widely known and deeply respected for her piety and sweetness of disposition. On the supernatural level, she was in frequent ecstasy, when she saw and conversed with the saints and her guardian angel, and carried on a dialogue with God in low, gentle tones. Much of what she said was copied down by her confessor and her aunt. In June 1899, the young woman received an interior warning that she was about to receive an unusual gift. One Thursday evening after that she received the stigmata--the marks of Christ's five wounds. Thereafter, the wounds would bleed every Thursday and Friday, and at times even up to Saturday. Then the bleeding would stop, leaving only white marks where the wounds had spurted forth. This continued until the last three years of her life. Her spiritual director then forbade her to accept the phenomenon any longer. At her prayer, therefore, it was withdrawn, although the white marks remained until her death. Most of Gemma's sufferings and penances were unknown to those who knew her. Only a few knew that she was the recipient of special spiritual gifts. There was in her none of the play-actor. She was simple and candid and sweet in her relationship with others. In January 1903 she was given one last cross, a galloping tuberculosis. When she died after much silent suffering on April 11, it was with a smile on her lips. The cause of Gemma's canonization was initiated as early as 1917, and she was canonized on May 2, This was most unusual in those days: it was only 37 years after her death. During the process that led up to her being declared a saint, the authorities raised questions about several of the more unusual spiritual phenomena that had been reported to her. In framing the declaration that she had practiced heroic virtue, the official Vatican decree carefully pointed out, as usual, that the Holy See passed no judgment on whether these phenomena of her were truly supernatural. It was her heroism that counted. St. Gemma was given to us, it seems, because in spite of her sufferings she retained a true Christian joy. As she once explained herself, "There is neither cross nor sorrow when we are tightly united to Jesus." --Father Robert F. McNamara

5 Do You Love Me? Feed My Sheep. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my lambs. 16 A second time he said to him, Simon son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Tend my sheep. 17 He said to him the third time, Simon son of John, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Do you love me? And he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go. 19 (This He said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) After this he said to him, Follow me. (John 21:15-19) As I meditated on those words of John, (John 21:1-19) I wondered why Peter went back to the fishing business since the Lord had called him away from it to make him a fisher of men. He must have been a natural leader, for when he suggested that he go fishing, six others willingly jumped into the boat with him to return to their former trade. When Peter first came to His Lord on shore, he jumped back in the sea again. That was because he saw the fire, which reminded him of his denial ten nights earlier. For a long time I asked myself, why, at that scene, did Our Lord speak of lambs and sheep? Generally, almost all of the Lord s illustrations were taken from the immediate scenes about Him like when the sower went out to sow his seed, or a fisherman threw his net into the sea, but a seashore seemed so alien to the conversation with the disciples which followed. Because Peter had denied Our Lord three times, Our Blessed Lord asked him three times if he loved Him. We have only one word in English for love, which is the source of the confusion and often the identification of sex and love. The Greeks had at least three words for love two of them are used in the Gospel. One Greek word for love is philia, which means a natural human love and affection. The other is agape, which means a sacrificial love. Peter had already been made the rock of the Church ; now Our Lord commissions him further to feed His lambs and feed His sheep. Before doing that, He asked if he loved: Simon, son of John, do you love Me? In challenging Peter, the Lord gave him the opportunity of three times confessing and proclaiming His divinity after three times denying it. In the first question, the Lord challenged the superiority of Peter s love (agape); in the second, He challenged if Peter had any love at all (agape); in the third question, the Lord challenged even his affection (philia). This was the most searching question of all and it pierced the heart of Peter and made him sad. The Lord wounds only that He may heal. After each of the triple confessions of Peter came the commission to feed My lambs and feed My sheep ; that is to say, to minister spiritual nourishment to His people and to the young. I could find no answer to the queries that went through my mind about the Lord speaking of the future members of His Church as sheep and lambs. As I gave up mentally trying to find a solution, someone tapped me on the shoulder. It was a shepherd. He had in his arms a three-day-old lamb which he placed in my hands. I said: Where did you find this lamb? He said, I am a shepherd and I graze my flock on this field adjoining the Sea of Tiberias. That was the answer! The Lord changed the metaphor from fish to sheep and lambs because the sheep and lambs were probably there that very day. Now I can see why the Lord called His bishops first to be lords and then to be shepherds, because He wants us to prosper spiritually, by hook or by crook! As I cradled the lamb as a symbol of the firstlings of the flock in the Church, Mr. Karsh and Mr. Morton arrived and on that very shore where the Lord stood, Mr. Karsh took the favorite picture of my life an unworthy shepherd holding a precious lamb in his arms. - Treasure in Clay: The Autobiography of Fulton J.
